How to avoid problems in Social Roleplaying.

Roleplayers can be a tricky lot.

It's a superhero setting, not World of Darkness. There are supernatural superheroes, but keep in mind that in the World of Darkness setting, humans would be shocked and terrified if they encountered one of the supernatural. But- this is a setting where humans aren't really put off by wild displays of unexplainable power, because they see superheroes doing these things on a regular basis. It goes without saying that a superhero wouldn't be too shocked to encounter a vampire or werewolf- even if psychologically they explained it away as some sort of genetic engineering or virus that caused it. It would also do you well if you were playing an 'incognito vampire', that walking around with pale skin and showing your fangs while dressed like Barnabas from Dark Shadows... it's making it obvious. Even if the superhero has never seen a vampire, he's probably at least seen one movie.

You don't want to start a fight in Caprice. People there aren't ignoring your fight because it's okay. They're ignoring you because... they're just ignoring you. It's obnoxious and childish. And not to mention, starting a brawl in public wouldn't work out so well for you- Champions Tower, UNTIL/UNITY, and PRIMUS are literally within walking distance of the Club. And no one cares how awesome your PvP build is. Trolling for PvP in Roleplaying is just sad and obvious.

Keep the ERP to yourself and your friend. This goes without saying. They made the penthouse hideout for a reason, and I'm pretty sure it was for this exact thing.

Don't go looking for attention if you don't want attention. Chances are if you make a 'almost naked' female and walk around, you can't throw a fit because a male character takes notice and you were only seeking female attention with it. You can't lash out about it- hell, you made it obvious. It's obvious what you want. No one is judging you and asking you to play the game differently. We're just asking that you realize that you're not the only person playing this game and not everyone is going to give you the ideal reaction when you try way too hard to draw attention to yourself.

Look into the lore, just a little. You might be shocked when you find out why no one takes a god seriously... and end up with a better idea.

Don't discount poor grammar and spelling. Not everyone speaks English as a first language. If someone's trying to make sense, give them a little credit. People who do speak other languages and are trying to learn English, and sometimes using chat systems helps them. They're learning from you as well, so.. don't be a jerk and spam ignore.

Don't ignore someone just because you don't like their character. Harassment and things of that nature being the exception... people tend to ignore someone just because they're playing something they don't like. This game has a stupid chat-ban system, so there's no real reason to completely mute someone for 24 hours because you don't like what they play or how they reacted to you. Deal with it, if you don't acknowledge someone chances are they will just go away.

It's a nightclub. Do the insanity elsewhere. It's not where people have emotional breakdowns, violent standoffs, etc. Seriously, people. What kind of bars do you go to?

All I have to say is: THANK YOU. Someone gets it. This pretty much sums up everything that needs to be dealt within roleplay.

While I haven't been in game for what feels like ages.. this post will likely be received very well from the Roleplay Community.

Great post. Couldn't agree with the OP more.

Not to mention there are plenty of places to RP other than the club. You are actually allowed to RP anywhere in the game.

You get annoyed at someone, take it to a cooler place. There are some nice settings to be found in this game.

A lot of cool places, actually.

I have a few more recommendations:

Don't be the Kool-Aid Man when people are RPing a group discussion. This is just rude. When you see one or more people roleplaying away from the crowd- even if you can 'hear' their conversation, it's not polite to just charge up and butt in. At least say 'excuse me'.

If you're going to be 'Japanese' or an Anime character- be sure your name makes sense. Without calling names, I know someone whose female toon's name means 'don't touch it'. Other times, I've seen Japanese names that aren't even names, just a collection of noises that sound Japanese.

If your character is going to enforce a law, research the law. I highly advise this, especially for people who think owning a firearm with an extended magazine is illegal... and even more nonsense 'laws' that aren't even laws. Google is your friend.

Remember where you are. This is a planet dominated by humans, and the cities in this game are full of superheroes. Waltzing around and claiming they're stupid, weak, and disgusting might get your teeth kicked out... or just make you look like the weird hobo in the alley that screams vulgarities to himself under the trash bags.

Can anyone suggest any more RP locations besides the club? The observation deck looks like a cool place to roleplay, but I hardly see anyone up there. Those are the only two I really know about.

There's Sherrera's Bar in Westside, it's more seedy and small (Zone theme-wise) than CC, but still fairly nice.

There's the Minefield, a gothic/techno bar, and the Bayou Queen, a Riverboat Casino and fancy restaraunt that's featured in the GRAB The Money and Run! Alert. Both are in Vibora Bay.

Recently, after on Alert, the devs have brought back three of the nine Crafting areas as RP Zones throughout MC: The Mystic Forge, Science Lab, and MCPD Armory, and have also opened up a separate zone in the MC TV Station as a social instance, too.

I put together this map to help some friends coming over from CoH. I hope it proves useful:

    rphots.jpg

My tips on avoiding problems? Stay away from toxic people and ignore them in the chat system. The fault for griefing and harassment lies with the griefer and not the targeted RP-er. There is no magical list or hoops a RP-er can jump through to prevent harassment.

RP the way you want and have fun with. Dress your character the way you like. Realize that the thoughts of others really don't matter, and continue on your merry way. The only "bad" RP is RP you don't enjoy.

You can sometimes find people in Sherrera's or Carl's Gym.

I'll add a list of areas that are outside of MC that I have used for RPs.

    Desert:

    Belle's Saloon, Snake Gulch.

    Project Greenskin.

    Canada:

Chiyetanka Bluff. (The friendly bigfoot village where you pick up quests)

Fallen Sun Forest. (the tall lookout radio tower on the hill, very small but it works)

There is a abandoned camp site east of Hoarfrost Hills that I used for RPing.

Used much of the mountains along the edge of the map.

Steelhead. Sometimes use the tents to RP in.

The Queen City: (The lv 20 mission you pick up in Canada)

With this early access to Vibora, you can use the ferry and the Minefield club to RP but only up to 5 party members per instance.

    Monster Island:

The Manimal Village where Father Elk is (name of village slipped my mind)

    The Beaches.

The ARGENT Hunting ground. Even though there are plenty of mobs around, can find some spots for jungle theme RPs.

    Lemuria:

    Aegir.

    Vibora Bay:

Same with The Queen City but you don't have to be in the same party for everyone to be in the same instance.

Red Snake's Dojo. Since the Dojo has been removed in Westside, I have been using this for a new location.

Juryrig's Garage. Used it once, but was a nice change in RP spots.

Open areas. I have found some spots like a New Orleans band and a large area of tables and chairs if your RP involves someplace to relax.

Now that is some of the spots I have used in the past, I am sure there is many more. What I am showing is that you don't really need a social instance to RP, the whole map is a social instance. You just have to keep an eye out for them.

I tend to love doing a moving/live action RP..I use missions, Adventure Packs, Comic Series and different locations in CO to RP...even interesting hideouts like Moon Base or Sanctum.

Hell, I found that some VB missions have odd little bedrooms in them...for reasons I cannot understand ......lol

But yes I appreciate this OP being drawn up...as a person who has had...issues with ERPers and my chars I cannot be happier this has been drawn up.

Also..something which I noticed tends to put people off are Telepaths/Psychics, just state OOC to the other person that your character IS a telepath, some may read your bio and just leave you alone, but some don't and get quite...offended? Or upset..so yeah..I tend to direct people to Mentella's PRIMUS page before they consider RPing...especially the personality section..so they can get a feel of how she..acts lets say lol

Excellent post, and excellent replies. Its such a shame that places like CC attract the most boring, hackneyed, cringe and yawn worthy RP I think I've ever seen. So many people come up to random characters and try and fight them. I've had it loads of times...well, that and random catsl@ts wanting to ERP. As the OP said...fights in CC are a no-no...
Also....please, please, please research ways in which women speak, if you are a male playing a female character. I'm not against males playing females, BUT females rarely 'giggle' give random 'hugs', want 'hip bumps', 'blush' when a cat-succubi 'snuggles tenderly' etc. I'm a female in RL (yes, there are a few of us out there) and i have NEVER given or received a hip bump, or giggled inanely at some dopey chat-up line, and if i wanted a same sex relationship, it would not be with a hairy cat or a horned and horny, tailed demon.
    ooops, gosh, was a ranting....:)

^ This so much. Also please think when speaking to females..the amount of time I've just been asked flat out for ERP is not healthy..I've just decided to avoid CC altogether.

I go in there only if I know SG members are going to be in there...I too have never received a Hip Bump lol

As for fights..I usually try to end a confrontation without my character having to use their powers..or things get really messy. I love it when people try to intimidate you and you just sit there and say: "That's nice dear...now..go back to the sand pit.." *sips tea*

My take on ERP is pretty realistic, same way I approach 'adult recreation' in real life...

If you're doing things privately, it's none of my business. Good for you and your partner.

If it involves kids, I think you should hang.

If you're being lewd in public, even though I don't have any 'delicate sensibilities', I think you deserve negative attention.

    Question:

Where can I get some RP going with actual superheroes?
They are an extremely rare sight in Caprice.

CORP is usually a good place to start (http://championsonlineroleplayers.shivtr.com). They're an umbrella organization for RP-er's in Champions Online. They hold events and operate IC and OOC channels to connect role-players with each other. They can also point you towards SG's that suit your needs.

    I hope this helps.
