I'm a returning player who is baffled by the re-itemization carried out since I took a break from the game.
I realize that I can't say "Get off my lawn!" to re-itemization and all the complicated, new-fangled things associated with it. It is clearly here to stay. But, I would like to minimize the bother associated with dealing with items.
If I just use what I find and don't bother with vehicles, mods, fusion, catalysts, questionite, lockboxes, auction house, and all that other stuff, would the ride to level 40 still be relatively smooth for most freeform characters?
If you don't intentionally gimp yourself, most content will be cake walk for a freeform char even if you don't pay too much attention to the new gear aspects.
Only exception is fusion. Over time, you will pick up mods, and you will pick up modable gear. It's better to use those than not - but you don't really need to go out of your way chasing specific things if you don't want to.
If you have been gone for a while, you might have a veteran chest in the mail. It contains heirloom gear that scales to your level and provides a balanced boost to your stats all the way up to 40.
If you have unspent Nemesis tokens, you can buy heirlooms that do the same as above. Also, there are some heirloom sets in the questionite store that have some fun extra abilities to them and do the same as mentioned above.
Once you decide you want to play with the mod system, you can access a tutorial in ren center.
A level 40 character can have its primary superstat satisfied by the questionite store secondaries or purchased gear, so you won't have to think about those once you equip them. Your primary gear houses mods that can grant you chunks of raw stats in any arrangement you'd like. Those slots are your budget to do whatever you like.
1. if you have a crafting skill. DON'T retrain it. your skill is now listed at the bottom of your character sheet.
2. if you have old components, sell any that aren't really cheap.
to convert the rest to mods ctrl/right click on one. WARNING: it will do all the ones in your bags and normal bank.
4. you can get a mod/fusing training mission by picking up a peice of gear with slots. any green gear over 15 should do, just buy one from the AH. Read all his instructions.
I'm starting a new character, so I went ahead and visited the Mysticism trainer. I'll fiddle around with that, and just keep other things in the bank for now.
It's a relief to hear that dealing with item-related complications is essentially optional, rather than required to be able to make good progress.

You simply have to open the Questionite Boxes and press the button to refine it from time to time.
If you like things in the Questionite shop you can use it directly there.
If you prefer items in the Zen shop you can trade Questionite for Zen without too much pain.
A Prootwaddle is one of the weirder player-character races in "The Fantasy Trip", Steve Jackson's first published role-playing game.
