I'd like to open this thread by saying that I know it'll bring in a lot of flames from the griefers, I'm sorry about that. I swear to you it's not my intention to cause trouble with this or to stir things up, I just want to make some suggestions which I feel could improve the "quality of life" of players who're being griefed and/or harassed (and I'm sure I'll become a target after this, as well).
I earnestly believe that if these proposals were put into effect, it would not only improve the quality of life of players, but it would cut down on reports the GMs would have to deal with, and it would allow some sort of co-existence between the griefers and the players, as only severe cases would have to be specially handled then. That is why I'm making these porposals... I think Champions Online is a truly amazing game which offers an experience that can't be found in any other MMO. I want it to stay that way.
Link global ignores to the forums.
I believe that if you globally ignore a player in the game, it's because they're harassing you and thus you wouldn't want to see anything they'd have to say. There might be fallout on the forums from ignores, or the ignored person might enjoy harassing people on the forums anyway. If the two were linked, then this scenario would be removed. A global ignore would
be a global ignore, and that player would never have to deal with an ignored individual ever again.
As an extension to this, it would be nice if it worked in reverse too. Have the option to ignore someone on the forums and then have that work for the game. So if one encounters an obvious griefer on the forums who's making trouble, one can hit the ignore button on their post and never have to see their posts or them in-game. This, again, would solve a lot of problems/forum-wars.
Have the option to make ignored avatars invisible.
Second Life does something like this and with good reason. Let's say that I and four others are roleplaying and a griefer comes along to mess with us. We put the griefer on ignore, but there are still issues. The griefer has managed to put together a very offensive avatar, for example, and it may take time for a GM to respond. If there was an option to blink them out o existence on the client-side, the problem no longer exists.
This would not "harm" griefers as it would not impede their play at all, it would just mean that people wouldn't have to view their offensive character designs. Only those who
wanted to view such offensive costumes would have to, as opposed to the griefer being able to shove that costume in everyone's face as they can now.
Have the option to disable the visual effects of an ignored avatar.
This includes powers, power effects, particles, auras, everything along those lines.
Again, if there's a group of roleplayers, a griefer could decide to be disruptive by holding a duel in the middle of them, not with the purpose of fighting, but so they could stand in the middle of a group and have a blaster blast them. This can degrade the fun factor for a lot of players, because it's so distracting. To get away from their power-griefing, players have to switch instances, but usually the griefers will just chase them to whichever instance they went to and start over. And really, why should they have to switch instances in the firs tplace?
This idea would allow people to go about their business without needing to report the griefer, they could collectively put the griefer on global ignore and then that griefer's character (and all their characters) wouldn't be able to interfere with hem any more. The griefer doesn't lose out because this is
client-side, to the griefer it still looks like he or she is successfully griefing, but those being griefed don't have to put up with it.
Have the option to disable environment explosions caused by the griefer.
I know this is hard, but I can't imagine it would be impossible and it would make a lot of people happy. Here's an example, let's say that the griefer is invisible, their powers have been disabled, and they can't grief that way. What will the griefer do then? They'll start picking up items and throwing them at people, so that the items will explode or whatever they're thrown at would explode.
Since the combat logging system is so extensive, and since destructible objects seem to be considered a critter on some level, I'd propose having a check. If an ignored player threw the object, the object doesn't render, and the dust cloud doesn't render. If an ignored player impacts against an environment object, then because it was the ignoored player that threw the item, the client knows not to play the destruction animation for the object.
The worst that would happen in this case is environment objects disappearing, and that really wouldn't be so bad because this can be ignored until they come back.
Final thoughts.
If all of these ideas were implemented, then griefing as we know it would be almost entirely removed in one, fell swoop. So please Cryptic, at least consider it, give it some thought. Second Life saw the necessity of this because griefer groups were moving in there, and did something similar. Now we have griefer groups moving in here and a reinforced, buffed up ignore system would help deal with it.

This is the kind of people you're dealing with, and they're going to start griefing en force in Champions Online then you're going to lose players en masse. All it takes to ensure that doesn't happen is to remove the griefing tools. I'd be happy with a reinforced ignore system, and I think most people would. We could just strike the grefers out of our existence without any detriment to the griefers themselves.
Isn't that a win/win for everyone?
[ Edited to add an addendum to the first proposal. ]

Also, please make the ignore list unlimited, or at least freaking huge. Came from WoW a few months back and was sad that my ignore list was too small to hold all the trade chatters. But then again maybe that was my fault for rolling Alliance.
With that, is there a hide feature? Can my handle be hid when I'm playing? I don't usually want to play in stealth mode--I thrive off the super group and friend interaction--but I'm curious that if my son or daughter used my account, would they be able to play in a bubble?
And playing by myself since Aug 2009

"Working as intended"... Yeah, right.
Also necro is bad...
=^ _ ^= Kitty Lives!
Seriously, even implementing just ONE of these things would be fantastic.
