DPS Chainsaw Robot

I want my next character to be almost entirely focused on DPS (but hopefully with enough survivability to not die easily in alerts). The theme is quite broad, so while the Power Armour set looks most appealing, anything from Electricity, Gadgeteering, and even Supernatural sets could work great too.

The only requirement is Gauntlet Chainsaw; I'd like to be able to do a lot of damage with this AoE, or at least enough to saw through weaker enemies with it as a side power.

The problem is I have almost no idea where to start. I'm guessing something like DEX with INT and EGO or END for superstats, Quarry, and some major AoE damage powers alongside Chainsaw. Energy Shield or Force Shield for block.

I'd love some suggestions and/or builds! PvE, and leveling, though I'm interested in any final retcon builds also. Thanks!

This topic really should be in the Builds subforum specifically, but I'll help you out.

Now keep in mind this is entirely devoted to having a kick-**** Chainsaw gauntlet build. It's a bit of a stretch for theme with a few specific powers (i.e.: void shift would have to be explained as some sort of teleportation technology, conviction as self-healing nanites, etc.) but I promise you learn to play what I'm about to show you and get it good gear and it will server you well.

Can you open your mind wide enough to give this a real chance to learn how to play it?
    PowerHouse (Link to this build)

Name: a melee build focused around chainsaw gauntlet

    Archetype: Freeform

    Super Stats:
Level 6: Strength (Primary) <-- target about 350
Level 10: Intelligence (Secondary) <-- target about 250
Level 15: Constitution (Secondary) <-- target about 250

    Talents:
    Level 1: The Devastator
    Level 6: Physical Conditioning
    Level 9: Body and Mind
    Level 12: Healthy Mind
    Level 15: Covert Ops Training
Level 18: Negotiator <-- more REC to improve MSA and combat initiative capability
Level 21: Quick Recovery <-- more REC to improve MSA and combat initiative capability

    Powers:
Level 1: Bestial Fury (Rip and Tear) <-- use when low on energy and needing stacks of enrage fast
Level 1: Shred (Penetrating Strikes) <-- use when higher on energy to get stacks of enrage and debuff the target for your Chainsaw Gauntlet
Level 6: Unleashed Rage (Rank 2, Rank 3) <-- why you need to be level 40 first before making this build, this is both your AoE and a stepping stone for unlocking early access to the next few power selections
Level 8: Molecular Self-Assembly <-- extra energy, triggered by plenty of your other powers
Level 11: Gauntlet Chainsaw (Rank 2, Rank 3) <-- focus of the build!
Level 14: Way of the Warrior (Rank 2, Rank 3) <-- perfect passive for this build
Level 17: Aspect of the Bestial <-- perfect form for this build, unranked both because it's bugged and because the adv points are better elsewhere
    Level 20: Conviction (Rank 2, Rank 3) <-- your self-heal, essential
Level 23: Void Shift (Emerging Nightmares, Nailed to the Ground) <-- absolutely necessary to close the gap and one of the very best lunges with these two advantages on it. It will interrupt almost anything thanks to the fear effect and the stun.
Level 26: Iron Lariat <-- necessary; it allows you to add in stacks of knock resist (for teamplay), and it allows you to pull enemies trying to run away from your chainsaw back to you! Get back here and die!
Level 29: Energy Shield (Rank 2, Laser Knight) <-- necessary, this will help keep your squishy self alive in the heat of combat
Level 32: Masterful Dodge <-- no dire need to rank it for this build
Level 35: Ego Surge (Rank 2, Nimble Mind) <-- ranked only to give you and extra 3 seconds of active offense time and an 42%-->50% damage bonus
Level 38: Evasive Maneuvers (Sleight of Mind) <-- you're squishy, use this to toss aside unwanted attention (aggro) from the enemies

    Travel Powers:
    Level 6: Athletics
Level 35: R.A.D. Sphere (Rank 2) <-- why not?

    Specializations:
Strength: Swole (2/3) <-- extra HP, but not as important as the others in this tree
Strength: Physical Peak (3/3) <-- VERY ESSENTIAL, you need to reduce your cost of running Power Gauntlet
    Strength: Brutality (2/2)
    Strength: Overpower (3/3)
    Warden: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Warden: Ruthless (2/2)
Warden: Upper Hand (2/3) <-- meh why not? You're already applying bleeds and shredded.
    Warden: The Best Defense (3/3)
    Vindicator: Aggressive Stance (2/2)
    Vindicator: Merciless (3/3)
Vindicator: The Rush of Battle (3/3)
    Vindicator: Modified Gear (2/2)
    Mastery: Strength Mastery (1/1)

    Any questions?

Gear for a balance of things, but you definitely might need more cost discount redux.

this is a setup focused on the sole purpose of getting as much as possible out of chainsaw without hurting the build too much. you can swap out things to your liking, focus on cost discount, because as said above the gauntlet is one of the highest costly melee powers, even more so when used with minigun(in this case).

Thanks guys, both of those builds look like the kind of thing I'm aiming for.

agentnx5: That actually looks terrifying, and perfect for my main goal, which is to cause havok -- and lots of damage -- in alerts. Void Shift and Iron Lariat are surprisingly appropriate for the theme (a sort of dark technology / bestial robot with some biomechanical aspects... and a chainsaw glove). Second TP would probably be Electric Teleport though...

My only question is how you'd suggest I level this prior to retconning into it; I was thinking basically as you posted, but with a defensive passive (Regen or Invulnerability) in Hybrid role and a standard AoE in place of Unleashed Rage? Or would going for DPS chainsawing work for leveling too?

I'll avoid alerts entirely until the mid level range, so it'd be up against mission enemies only. Also using a full set of Nemesis Heirloom gear for leveling.

Sorry about that, I've only just spotted that subforum at the top.

no harm done, the build he posted is definately a retcon build since you only get unleashed rage as a choice by lvl 35.

as a side note i want to point something out for chainsaw and debuffs(slashing in specific)
iirc, the debuffs from viper's fang and shred are not the same, so they should stack. incase they're not you can replace viper for command animals. they apply another shredded debuff and that one definately stacks with shred.

another note, about lariat i think the adv applies bleeds per hit.

some notes on his explainations, unleashed rage is a great AoE power, but it's not the only one in the build. your main power for the build is a cone AoE that does the job(does it so well you'd make a build for it!)

If your intention here is to use Minigun together with Chainsaw, I should warn you that while it does work (as long as you can afford the ungodly energy cost), it causes the Chainsaw graphic to just hang by the side a bit instead of punching it into your enemy. It looks kinda lame.

Yes the build I posted is one that you must be level 40 before you can build it, correct.

That said, not really a big deal. You can actually speed-level ridiculously fast these days, using whatever build you want, then RetCon @ 40.

Oh and to get the desired stat spread, I recommend picking up a complete set of "Samurai" secondaries (gear) for a mere 33000 Q, refined (which is $1.65 if I did my math right). Then after you RetCon to the build I described when you're level 40, you get your primary gear whether that be Heroic (2 days of farming each, and free) or Legion (crazy expensive, but cutting-edge and slightly better than Heroic with R7 and above mods) gear. On your primaries you want 3-4 STR mods, and 2-3 of your secondary stats. If you have to choose between secondary stats, CON is more important (unfortunately also more expensive, but that's because the market know's its value)

Which are the two reasons I opted not to make the build that way, although I considered it.

The build I posted actually was very similar to one a friend had to take on Force Cascade or Epidemic users in PvP with quite a bit of success. So it's duel tested and in the hands of an experienced player is solidly reliable.

Just be warned there's a bit of a learning curve on it: knowing when to do what in response to what & why. That's skills you have to learn on your on with your own controls. Lots of ol' school fighting-game-like combos.

I just did a test of this and they don't stack...so best bet is to swap in Command Animals to apply the shredded debuff from a second source...

Endurance on Kill secondary gear may still be available in the AH and can be very useful for a Chainsaw build (particularly in PVE). The loss in stats can be more than made up for with the increased sustainability of Chainsaw through the extra energy gain.

Oh, and Inexorable Tides is an excellent complement to Chainsaw.

yup, i tested it out after posting, the shredded from command animals and the one applied by those two are two different ones, one gets consumed, the command animal's one doesn't.

wouldn't matter for this type of build since there's nothing to consume it with.

Why not Overdrive instead of MSA? Are you really going to popping a cooldown more often than you're spamming Chainsaw Gauntlet?

Depends on what you are fighting I suppose. Few opponents in the game can stand up to a half maintain of a proper LoLsaw build. Most disintigrate with a slight tap of the key.

Scary Biomech Chainsaw Beast(tm) is proving to be great fun to play so far. Currently level 30, and following agentnx5's build, just with Regeneration instead of WotW for leveling.

I am maintaining the Chainsaw a lot against Alert bosses and the like, so I might experiment with Overdrive instead of MSA when I retcon into the final build. But then I'm using Conviction and especially Void Shift a lot too, and the cooldowns will be miniscule with level 40 gear. Hmm...

Thanks for all the help so far!

Another option that would provide more damage while allowing for great survivability while leveling:

Switch out Regen for Quarry. Take the, "Fair Game," advantage (and Rank 2) on Quarry. With Con as a secondary SS, the dodge/avoidance buff from Quarry (reinforced with gear and perhaps Evasive Maneuvers), and the health gain with each kill from Fair Game you have the potential for some very serious survivability.
