Check out this video, re-posted from here

Craig Zinkievich, the COO of Cryptic speaking at Social and Online Games Summit about user generated content.

http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1016471/User-Generated-Content-In-MMOs

The things we need to draw Dev attention to is what Craig says at 44:50-

He's answering a question about the cost vs benefit of UGC or a Foundry.

Basically he's saying that the 200 plus hours of 5 star, max rated content*, was worth the cost in so much as this amount of content couldn't have been created for the same price/time as the Foundry cost them to make possible.

In short; The Foundry would literally be worth more than any other type of content they could make.

*Never mind potentially larger amounts of worthwhile 4 start content. This is in part because he assumes that Cryptic generated content is equal to 5 stars, which he freely admits players wouldn't necessarily rate so high all the time.

The CO community might be well placed to use a Foundry well too, at this point.

As a players of superhuman game, linked to a classic role-playing game you will have people used to running and plotting superhuman scenarios as well as people who got into computers via the educational boost such mathematics-rich and creativity-rich games provided.

Also because CO is not linked to a specific, heavily marketed superhuman universe there will not be too many people trying to do countless "how Wolverine got his claws" or "Jason Todd: the real story" missions.

Superhero stories, done well, are about modern archetypes.

A Prootwaddle is one of the weirder player-character races in "The Fantasy Trip", Steve Jackson's first published role-playing game.

The devs have already said that they want to bring the Foundry to CO, and are working (little by little) to make it happen. I expect the effort will accelerate once Neverwinter is fully active, and its Foundry features have been moved to STO. In short, if we don't have a Foundry in CO by year's end, I'll be surprised, and I think it'll be not long after.

The greatest benefit with having the Foundry last is that it will be the most complete version. But CO has suffered from lack of one since no one wants to play the same 5 minutes of new content for several months at a time.

I don't even have to read this to support it (I still read though)

As someone who is just now getting fully into this game and playing a lot this is the main feature I am disappointing is not in the game, and one I will be pushing for in any and all feedback, posts, videos, everything, I make, say, and do about this game.

Foundry would open this game up in such an immense way it baffles me that it has yet to be implemented yet. Until then...

I'm starting to frame in my head a series of adventures in which the heroes will discover and try to dismantle VIPER's Powers Division (Project Icebox, Project Back Burner [the origin of my own character Backfire], Project Bolt, and so on). This is on top of the Poe storyline, the Magna Carta scenario, and Threads of DOOM!

Please, CO, let me tell my stories interactively! <pleading puppy-dog eyes>

I'm with you. I've got a lot of ideas involving street level crime with the MC Gangs ^^

Similarly, I've formulated a few ideas using factions that don't really get enough attention in the game (in part to make it easier for people to earn the "defeat 5000" Perks). :)

Adding Foundry to Champions Online would be the best thing that could happen to it. This NEEDS to be at the top of the dev 'to do' list. The little invasion alert was ok, the new event looks like another small alert type deal. That's ok, glad they are making some content, but these are tiny additions. I know better than to hope for an expansion or a whole new zone, but give the community the tools to make content themselves and watch this game get reinvigorated! Fix/expand Nemesis system and add Foundry, you will win and profit.

Honestly, the devs just need to stop all bug fixing, QoL, lockboxes, everything, and just get the Foundry in the game.

The game's stable enough, but we need more content. The devs may not have time to handle content creation on top of everything, so the Foundry's the perfect answer.

Let the community make the content, you guys can then go back to the things that make money. Powersets, archetypes, and ugh, lockboxes.

Cryptic when you finally make the foundry be sure to have some kind of status variable that counts how many times the content gets played or doesn't for that matter.

Should be a nice wake up call to people who think this is a solution.

I would be very interested in seeing the results of this.

I have frequently wondered if the people most inclined to use the foundry might be the very people most likely to be, at least somewhat, satisfied without it. In other words, would the foundry be increasing the value of the game for those who already consider the game of sufficient value or would it be adding value to entice those who are not currently paying/playing to do so ?

I would also like to point out that adding foundry would bring in more of a market for them too. New players will come, existing players will stay, and maybe even veteran players will come back. Please do add Foundry. As a lifer of CO, I'd want this to happen to tell many stories to the citizens and champions of Millennium City.

I for one look forward to the Foundry.
Give us the assets, and the means to set up story lines, with NPCs talking in instances both outdoor and indoor themed, and your playerbase will create amazing things.
How do I know this? Other games.
A EA evolution game I used to play (the forums still censor other games, right?) had a mission creator in an expansion pack. While most submissions were rubbish, there were some golden ones that were amazing.
A game about a scientist saving the world from oppressive Sliders and an alien invasion that will never be a trilogy by Valve? I have seen the most brilliant stories told via mods.
A certain game about mining and crafting? Adventure maps. Oh, sweet, sweet, adventure maps.

The point is, if we have the tools, we will create. We will create arcs, stories, even if all we have are the most basic room and entity options.
    Because give a human tools...

And they'll either eat it, mate with it, or attempt to use it to start off something potentially amazing.
Or break it. Humans do that well too.

(Edit: also something I note is that there's very little CO fan-fiction accessible from my searching... We need to get writing our ideas for Foundry story lines down in narrative form, so even if it's not going to happen, the stories can still entertain...)

You know, in just about every game that features UGC, including STO, I don't run it. There's enough to do without it...

CO is the only game in which I actually desire UGC. I love my characters here. I want to run them through new stuff. A half an hour of new content every few months just doesn't cut it. I've read some of the stuff our community has to offer and it's pretty amazing. We have some very talented players here...

CO is the only game I feel truely needs UGC. And it's the only Cryptic game that doesn't have it...

If there is ever a Most Wasted Potential catagory in any MMO awards, CO wins it hands down...

But they don't bug fix. All they (the one or two CO dedicated devs) do is bring out more short-lived missions and more lockboxes.
