A friend is trying to determine which is the better option for his rather squishy Solider AT: Purple Secondaries or Armadillo Secondaries, which give the 25% Damage Resistance.
With Armadillos he's at
PSS Ego 277
SSS Dex 234
SSS Rec 189
The changes in the bonuses he gets from Off and SS only vary by about 1%. It seems like the bonus from the Armadillo gear should more than make up for the slightly weaker offensive abilities and lower Def, but maybe I'm missing something somewhere. Any insights would be most welcome!
The trick is whether you can find secondaries and/or mods that might boost your dodge chance or defense to provide a better end result than the 25% damage resist. I can tell you that I, personally, prefer the 11K Q sets because I can equip them on a new alt and not have to ever worry about gear again...

Its just a pitty that the Q gear is bind on pick up so you cant purchase and send to a alt.
Sure you can.
On the character that wants to buy the gear for the lowbie, open up the Questionite Exchange and set up an order to buy 660 Zen at 50 Q/Zen (That's 33000 Questionite). The order will NOT fill, because nobody sells Zen that low. Cancel the offer. The Questionite will go into holding on the Exchange, it will not be returned to the character.
Switch to the lowbie. Open the Questionite Exchange, and hit the Withdraw button. The character you are currently logged in with will withdraw the Questionite, and can go now buy the gear.
Place an order for 1320 Zen at 50 Q/Zen if you plan on buying all six pieces.

A lot of endgame gear has additional benefits that the leveling gear such as Armadillo, Nemesis, or Veteran's gear don't. Additional benefits such as increased Crit Chance, Crit Severity, Dodge, Avoidance, Cooldown Reduction, and Cost Reduction, to name the more popular modifiers. Not to mention that the Primary gear can be slotted with mods to provide much higher stat boosts. The leveling gear has lower base Defense and Offense at level 40 as well.
The leveling gear boosts your stats pretty high at earlier levels, but that bonus suffers something of a diminishing return as you level, such that by level 40 they are fairly inferior to Heroic/Legion/Vigilante/purple gear. The one possible exception is the Armadillo secondary gear, three pieces of which grant you a 25% damage resistance, which for some character types (squishies, mostly) might outweigh the benefits of the higher stats, Def/Off, or possible modifiers of purple secondaries.
Personally, I ditch the leveling gear without fail by 40 on pretty much all my characters. This is because I generally like to closely tailor my stats, sometimes using secondaries to bolster non SS's, or really concentrating on a particular SSS or my PSS, which the leveling gear doesn't allow you to do. Also, some pieces of Vigilante gear are good for boosting Crit Chance, Healing Bonus, etc. Some of my squishier or Dodge-based characters I'll even ditch the Primary Defense slot for a Dodge/Avoidance piece by the late 20's - 30's.
To answer your question I'd, personally, do option 2 the higher dodge/avoidance route because d&a provides a better, but randomly occurring, mitigation power than the 15% all damage resistance ever could.
Things you SHOULD know are listed below, skip them if you please to.
Rank 3 regeneration gives you up to 30%(scaling down as you lose hp) resistance to all damage.
More importantly you should know that dodge&avoidance is pretty much just a dice roll though you can force a dodge return with masterful dodge(15 seconds of YES!) but you can do without dodge as long as you know how and when to block certain attacks(Know your limits and know when to get the cookies out of there)
Also having 3 Armadillo secondaries gives you a buff that adds 25% all damage resistance(yes it is ALL damage resistance I tested plenty of times). This, too, is optional since sometimes you may find your block provides enough protection.
To give you a hint on how good avoidance is here is how much damage I took with just 63.2% I had no defense/resistance at all(Just used r3 masterful dodge+swingingw/flippin' but yea)
[Combat (Self)] You lose 69 (188) Fire Damage from an unknown ability.
[Combat (Self)] You lose 138 (375) Fire Damage from Yellow Beam.
[Combat (Self)] You lose 375 Fire Damage from Yellow Beam.
[Combat (Self)] You lose 276 (750) Fire Damage from Green Beam.
[Combat (Self)] You lose 553 (1500) Fire Damage from Blue Beam.
[Combat (Self)] Mega-Destroid Terminator deals 5115 (13888) Particle Damage to you with an unknown ability.
[Combat (Self)] Mega-Destroid Terminator deals 7206 (19565) Particle Damage to you with Eye Beams.
And here is 100% Resistance to all damage (Came from only using Experimental Artificial Life Injection...destroid has defense penetration so I can't show you those numbers)
[Combat (Self)] You lose 94 (188) Fire Damage from Red Beam.
[Combat (Self)] You lose 188 (375) Fire Damage from Yellow Beam.
[Combat (Self)] You lose 377 (750) Fire Damage from Green Beam.
[Combat (Self)] You lose 753 (1500) Fire Damage from an unknown ability.

I get why you'd want to switch the questionite primaries. They are so limiting in fact that I'm surprised anyone uses them in the first place.
But bearing in mind that the 9 mod slots you get in a set of hero gear allow you to construct just about any profile you want, and assuming you actually do want some defence, what combination of secondary gear works better than the Armadillo set?
The 150k questionite gear looks good but I still don't see an enormous advantage when you consider the 25% damage reduction of the Armadillo set.
And what's more, the 150k stuff only increases your primary, not your secondaries, making it a less versatile.
I want to believe there is a better endgame option than the Armadillo secondary set but I desperately need some examples. :shrugs:

The crit strike, crit severity or + healing on secondary offenses and the cooldown reduction/cost reduction on secondary utilities are what sell them, generally.
Secondary defenses are kinda mediocre since you can't get one with +dodge or +avoid (unless somehow a bugged one slipped through the cracks somewhere).
So if you don't have any use for any of Crit Strike/Crit Severity/Healing/Cost Redux/Cooldown Redux, then it would just come down to the core stats.
If you have no need for the rating stats I mentioned and you're happy with picking up only your superstats in your secondary slots, go for it.
I generally prefer to grab those rating stats, along with stats that I want a little bit of that aren't my superstats (like Con or Rec or End or whatever on a character that doesn't super those).

1 + 1 = 2 ( samurai secondaries ), bobs.
note: Thread is not about damage.
