Please shift focus away from vehicles.

As I am currently seeing things, Champions Online's focus on vehicles has shoved everything aside. To be fair, let me be both positive and negative in my criticism.

Positive:

The vehicles make a cool 'travel power' alternative for some people. Acrobatics and Swinging are fun, but for 'Batman-like' characters and others that don't fly or teleport, it's cool to have this option to get across the map.

The vehicles don't look bad. While they may not be 'my ideal' options for appearance, they aren't bad looking. I've seen worse designs, by far.

They are kind of useful for AT's in open-world missions.

Negative:

There is no customization in the vehicles. It sort of defeats the point to have a superhero using a vehicle that he can't modify to his own 'theme'. A Hawkwing could easily be a 'Redhawk' or 'War Eagle' for a character themed as such, for example, if we were allowed to at least modify the color schemes. Instead, we're stuck with a few color palettes and that's it. I find this to be the worst failure of the vehicles.

EVERYTHING has been about vehicles lately. And I mean, EVERYTHING it seems. We understand, guys- you made a breakthrough and made vehicles a thing in a superhero game, and you're the first. Good, you DID it, now move on to making other stuff. I could go on and on about lockboxes and vehicle mods in the drop table- but the point is, it's time for other stuff.

The vehicles are limited to aircraft. Plain and simple, every vehicle in Champions Online is a different shaped jet. Not motorcycles, not cars, not tanks or monster trucks or anything else. It's all a jet in some way or another. You brought JETS to Champions Online, not 'vehicles'. This is like saying 'I have food' and you come over and all I have are potato chips... it's not a lie, but it's not as broad a category as I'm claiming it to be. Either broaden the category or just leave it be as is.

Overall...

My main point is that this game is a superhero game. Everyone has a different idea of what makes a cool superhero... a ninja, a caped superman, a shady vigilante, a super-soldier, a robot, a monkey with a hammer... it doesn't matter. But while vehicles are a big part of superhero mythology... the focus placed on it recently has become ridiculous and absurd.

Please, stop. Make other stuff. Please. I can't stress this enough. What person is on here screaming 'more vehicles!'? None that I've seen. So there you have it. Shift focus, please.

Now that the Lemurian Invasion is done, I'm pretty sure they will shift the focus sooner than most players expect.

My bet about the next feature is on BOff-like custom sidekicks. There's money to make, with not much effort.

Seriously should have went with a well crafted movie making tool to build your fan base.
Go see what Valve has done. What do they have 4 characters? Being used infinitely.
Champions has infinite characters, being left behind for other games and franchises.

I would call all 30 of us with our alts the whole population of CO.

All the others are just NPCs.

But yeah, vehicles just don't click for me.

However, I expect that to be the main focus for quite some time.

I agree, i have no interest in vehicles and seeing as how theyre weaker than freeform.....why...just why.

The only thing i have gotten out of anything to do with vehicles, is a faster travel power.

No interest in vehicles as they currently stand.

In all of the threads discussing player-vehicles over the last couple of years, discussion with Cryptic-Studios devs led us to believe that vehicles would be customisable player-RP-centric entities that we could tailor to fit our characters.

In implementation you decided to pervert that opportunity into another excuse and system for grinding/buying zen/unlocking lockboxes for the express purpose of filling vehicle slots.

Every single vehicle drop I get in-game I discard in disgust. Are you even listening to what we would like developed anymore?, or are you just interested in more potential opportunity in game-systems for lining your pockets?.

    What a wasted opportunity. Pathetic.

Sell them to an NPC. Collections Officers will buy them, so will some other vendors. There's no reason to pass up free resources!

In the wake of the initial release of vehicles, it was the right plan to have some content that focused around vehicles. Let's face it, if they hadn't come out with that stuff.. vehicles would have looked even more useless than they do now.

The most important point you made was about customization, and the fact that all the vehicles are just jets with differing polygons. Without the customization, they have to keep coming out with more vehicle-balanced content. Imagine if for the next year they don't come out with anymore vehicle content.... then a new player asks you "what's the point of vehicles?"; I know my response would be something along the lines of "Well, they're kind of useful in two missions... but pretty much useless in the rest of the game unless they happen to match your concept".

If they had implemented just color customization, that would have gone a long way to making the flying vehicles stand on their own merit. Had they included cars, motorcycles, and ground tanks ( maybe as super speed travel powers, like people asked ) then the flying vehicles would have been just another option and we wouldn't notice quite so much how useless they are, and simply consider them more customization for our characters.

Because they took the approach they did, they will sadly have to continue to tune more encounters for vehicle involvement. I have to wonder, if they didn't have to do that if maybe stuff would be coming out faster, since right now they not only have to test stuff for how stuff is balanced for player characters, but also for how it's balanced for player vehicles, and then how it's balanced for characters and vehicles at the same time.

I'm still excited to see what they're coming out with next though, even if it is going to involve vehicles. It could be worse.... they could be coming out with vehicle-only content!

No, BOff, as in Bridge Officer. A customizable "pet" sidekick. They mentioned that in the last UNTIL Field Report.

I've already proposed a DOFF-like system, where you'd have Contacts you could hit up for offscreen missions that net you some trivial amount of Q, similar to the way STO DOFFs will make you 5 D at a time (usually). For instance, if you have a Newspaper contact, he could dig up some dirt on your Nemesis; your Cop contact could go get some inside info on the New Purples; your Romantic Interest could help a Spunky Girl Reporter to cross Downtown (and if the mission succeeds, she could become a new Contact!), etc.

The BOFF system could be cool too, but to fit the supers idea you'd probably only get one or two Sidekicks. If we can customize them, though - well, Spider-Bat's in the market for another Blackbird, since his last one left to become Blackwing...

In regards to the BOFF-like sidekick system. I recall around the time of STO's launch that people were complaining about the limit placed on how many characters everyone started with. "Why do we get so few character slots?", they asked. The response from Cryptic was something like Bridge Officers take up about as much data on the server as the player characters and Cryptic didn't have the server capacity to give everyone as many starting slots as you do in games like Champions."

So assuming that still holds true today, if it does get the green light I wouldn't expect it to be as extensive as the BOFF system in STO. Just a device-triggered character that you can plug a few mods into(one determines offensive powers, one for defensive and one for buffs), control about as well as most other summoned pets and have the same visual customization options as the attack drones(a dropdown menu with prefab options).

I never felt forced to have a vehicle, so if this thread is about content that accomidates vehicles i i have to disagree.

However if this thread is just about wanting something other than vehicles to to be the new prize (like finally getting auras) than i agree.

    PVP is starving without rewards

    1. Please give us Daily PVP missions that reward Questionite.
    2. Please give us an exchange rate between Acclaim and Recognition so that PVP has access to all "On Alert" PVE rewards.

EVERYTHING has been about vehicles lately. And I mean, EVERYTHING it seems.

I agree on most of your points, but to be fair everything in this case means about a whole 2 missions, which is honestly a problem in and of itself :frown:

After thinking about it a good part of the problem, aside from the obvious face the we cant customize them, lies in the fact that the vehicles frankly suck and thus NEED gimmicky vehicle centric stuff like the exojets in the invasion to be relevant at all. Ideally the vehicles should of been about equal to the heroes the choice of having a toon use a vehicle should of been about the same as choosing to have said toon use fire or gadgets, equally viable but maybe in different ways. I know "pay to win" worries creep in here but if the vehicles weren't so pathetically weak, I like to call them "pay to lose" myself, then they wouldn't NEED to have their own special missions made for them they'd just be used for normal stuff like any other power.

Been months now where it's been all about the vehicles. Hell, I think since vehicles were introduced, CO has seen more vehicles added than STO has seen starships added. Food for thought there. Starships are way more of a draw in STO than vehicles are gonna be in this. It caters to a small selection of character types. I'll say it again, the Nighthawk release was perfect. They had the nighthawk themed jets, and then they came out with the new powers, new items, yada yada. It was perfect. Then they started lumping in these more generic "military" type vehicles, like stuff you'd see in GI-Joe. Except no new and interesting focus on those powers, unless you count the ridiculous buff that shot two gun mojo ahead of like...everything. I will likely never use a vehicle. I bought one, thinking it'd sell well on the auction house. It didn't. Not making that mistake again. Please make the game about super heroes again. Thanks.
