Definitions of cheat related terminology in video game competition

I wanted to take a moment to clear up some misused terminology being thrown around just recently. An accusation of hacking in PvP was thrown out and the rebuttal was that hacking is impossible in Champions.

Neither of these are correct.

1. Anything CAN be hacked with enough time, money, and effort.

2. Champions is relatively safe from client-side hacks because the important data such as your stats, gear, damage, HP, energy, etc. is ALL being locked down on the server-side. To hack it, you'd have to hack the server.

3. Champions is relatively safe from server-side hacking because there isn't a motive worth the risk & effort. If you can hack the server, why on earth would you waste your time with PvP? Generate keys, Zen, gold/resources, Questionite, etc. and sell them for real-money. If you've got the power to hack the server, then you've got the power to steal thousands of dollars in minutes!

4. Cheating in games is defined as "gaining an unfair advantage by unconventional/prohibited means". There are three types of means: cheating via 3rd party hack software, cheating via exploiting, and/or breaking a sportsmanship agreement (i.e. both parties agree to no devices and then one breaks that promised agreement).

4. Exploiting is defined as "using a game design bug/glitch to cheat". Recent examples include everything from using the Team Energy Surge glitch along with Gas Pellets to kill bystanders not in a duel or PvP setting or abusing the chat-ban system to silence people you don't like.

5. Min/maxing, using R9 mods, using devices that aren't glitched such as Legacy or healing devices, using Legion Gear, or even using macros to pull off combos efficiently are NOT exploiting! Period.

6. Using the above in a setting where parties had agreed not to is unsportsmanlike and cheating. But it's neither hacking nor exploiting, and and therefore NOT bannable. (you can opt to simply ostracize & ignore the rude jerk, or yell at them if that's your thing)

Make sense? Questions?

I was assuming we'd all be on the same page that no one in their right mind would waste the time and effort to hack the CO server to win a duel in this train wreck of a game.

Guess I should have clarified there in my post shooting down lucy's crazed rant.

Well, that, and there's about 10 people in existence who understand Cryptic's code.
