Maybe it means he's sidekicking to you? I do see you are the team Champion, and he is also your level.
Protect your sidekick!
Nope, he'd have a blue starburst around his level number then.
I'd throw an idea and say it gave a quick glance to what passive they were running buuut that Doc Quantum guy is running the same one and doesn't have the icon...So I dunno...
That picture is like 'Where's Waldo Lurking'.
What are we excatly looking for?

It's obviously sign of the Tank, the bigger gear is Gadgeteer. Roight? I clearly have no idea...

Edit: yeah I just checked a video I recorded in an alert. Green starburst around my character and not any of the others (everyone's sidekicked to 30).
I believe it is because Alert teams aren't actually 'teams', but as it says, 'Open Mission Group'. Everyone is set to level 30, but since you aren't actually on a team it doesn't show the starbursts on their numbers.
Buuuut..... One guy on the team has a little icon of a starburst under the cogwheel, where the shield is on that screenshot. Humm.
And, continuing on this...In my screenshot, nobody has the icon at all. I am 27, we had a level 8, 34, 20, and 22 in the group. (Although we barely won it.) I have doubts levels mean anything...But it just seems utterly random.
I think it means he's FF, running in tank build.
I've noticed only my FF's get 2 symbols and never if they are in hybrid.
But then I've also seen someone with 2 tank symbols, so....
ok just been in an alert,
top one appears to be what the at/ff is, general type.
bottom one is current build, if they have a choice. the alert had a tank/tank, ranged/hybrid, a hybrid/ sidekicking(he was level 14 and had the starburst symbol second), a support /support,and my ff(gearwheel)/tank.

The top one is the player's current role, but the second one appeared when he switched to the Tank role. I see this thing somewhat often, even on AT Players.
I just can't get my head around as to what the hell the thing means, and by the looks of things around here, not a lot of us actually know what it is anyway. Also, nobody in the team was sidekicking when the screenshot was taken, else a blue/green burst would have appeared behind their level.
Note to self: Use a more outstanding color than red for outlining next time.
It took me like 5 minutes until I saw the little red box around the shield. (Found Waldo!) Never actually notice this before in teams. Something planned for future features?

Took me a while to notice, too. It is kinda overshadowed by the NPC in the purple shirt.

Deliciously nutritious!
Doesn't that starburst only show when you're the one being sidekicked?

Third guy on the list of teammates has a little shield icon under his role icon.
The starburst icon (on my video) and shield icon on this picture seem to correspond to the Offensive/Defensive/Utility icons. Shrug.
Sidekick Champion.
Sidekick...Minion guy.
