Greetings! As some of you may know from my last post, I recently returned. I have a question that is likely a matter of opinion, but something that I am having trouble working out myself:
How much CON should be built-in for current endgame content?
What brought me to this question is the fact that my Celestial/Darkness dedicated support hero keeps getting one-shot by stray attacks. I built in more CON, sacrificing some INT in the process, but he keeps getting one-shot.
Am I doing it wrong? Is there another stat that I should be getting? I considered Defense from items, but it seems to have a very minor impact overall... which lines up with what I have read from other people who state that Offense and Defense need to be either buffed or re-worked.
How much in the way of hitpoints or another defensive stat should a dedicated support that stands at 50 feet from the enemy have to be able to survive the occasional "big hit" when a fight starts? What about DPS roles, both ranged and melee?
Well, I'm at work so I don't have ready access to current numbers, but I believe that I've tried everything from zero (i.e. no additional) to +150, taking a pretty big hit to a secondary Super Stat.
Amount needed depends less on "role" and more on "build". For a lot of builds stacking CON is not necessary at all while in others they are just fine with two stats so people just throw CON in as the third stat because why not?
Well honestly you can ALMOST never have to much con because it scales linear with health, and has hard cap in that aspect. You can also use CON offensively in the darkness/celestial trees with the energy unlock and imbue. INT hits a hard cap and begins to offer less and less, so massive amounts can be considered a waste. If you run in support role, energy management becomes much easier also.
Honestly in my opinion, can can always be a secondary stats. If the mods and CON gear is to expensive PRE can be used instead with a defensive passive, although nothing offers protection like CON does.
Most of my builds have a fairly solid self heal capacity so I prefer PRE over CON unless I expect the character to face serious spike damage.
My reasoning is that the extra health gain from a PRE supported heal can be reapplied repeatedly while any health from CON greater than the damage output of my foes is wasted.
A fun build is CON as PSS with all mods as CON using the Adrenaline Rush spec for heals, Guardian/Warden with Vindicator for Defense in RANGED or MELEE ROLES! Lots of damage, knock resistance and self healing power.
Learning to Block is 1st thing they teach in the Tutorial.
...
The first thing I saw in the tutorial was how to walk. Then how to talk to contacts. Then how to target and attack enemies.
I don't remember anything about blocking before I fought Black Talon, which is nearly the end of the tutorial.
And even then, sometimes an enemy gets off an attack when you don't realize they're targeting you, or you soak a few AoEs or something else like that while you're healing or buffing a teammate, and can't block - or you have to let them die if you do.

Imbue was changed.
There are plenty of things that offer protection superior to CON. For example having a big bag of health is nowhere near as useful as simply stacking dodge/avoid either alone or in conjunction with other defenses and none of this requires specific stating.

While I recognize that you are trolling, I would like to mention that most of my deaths have been one-shot AoEs that I got caught by because, you know, only human.
I did take a surprising "WTF" death in the weekly custom Alert, of all things, last week when Black Diamond targeted me with something as the fight led off. The tank went in and started taking damage, I had to heal, I pulled aggro in the process but didn't recognize it because the camera angles are TERRIBLE in that place, and I got one-shot.
Anyway, maybe I'm approaching the problem from the wrong angle: I use Seraphim as my passive, Compassion as my form, and I tend to keep Conviction up in boss fights (though it's completely unreliable as even a 1-point scrape from an AoE will deactivate it). I do use mostly "defense"-laden gear, and I can survive most encounters without ever going below 70% health.
Other than simply having more CON and DEF or never doing anything other than perma-blocking, is there some way to survive those massive "big hits"?

A couple of things.
Stack dodge/avoidance through gear/specs.
Invest in Shield powers and the energy to keep them up if needed.
Invest in lower cooldowns and two active defenses so one is almost always available.
Invest in a block enhancer that has a lingering effect.
Invest in passive healing so that when you a big strike comes you are less likely to have already had your health reduced from something prior.
Awareness of enemy tells. Being killed will happen but being one shotted in PvE is very hard to do if you're paying attention and can see and hear what's happening (too many power effects in alerts can make this more difficult). You don't need to perma block, you just need to block when something is charging up (as nearly all things that can one shot you in PvE do)
