Many, many months ago, I built a character intended to be based on Batman. To that end, he had some martial arts and some munitions powers. Originally, I gave him Lightning Reflexes, but I found he was incredibly flimsy. LR on its own provides almost NO defense that I have ever seen. I tried using other powers, like Medical Nanites, Regeneration or Invulnerability, but none of them fit the theme for me.

Along comes the Night Avenger powers, so I rebuilt him AGAIN to use some of those powers. However, I'm still finding him very, very hard to enjoy. The stealth side of the passive seems never to work, and is worthless in team environments where enemies are spamming endless area effects. Plus, he's still impossibly squishy. As soon as an enemy looks his way, he's pretty much toast.

That brings me here, again. How would you go about building an homage character based on Batman?

(I'm at work now, I'll post my own current build when I get a chance)

Sorry there, i still haven't tried to build anything, but you say LR don't have any defense? Actually it is pretty good, can survive quite good on Specialist AT, but anyway.

I think if you mean lack of defense, you need from specs and of course from equipments. Yeah, Night Avenger is kinda hard to use, the stealth have a cooldown for an action like 3 or 4 seconds till it reactivates again, also to not break Stealth you can't attack directly nor be attacked (even DoT, like Pestilcen from the Nemesis Smashes).

With a hybrid Melee/Muni character, you're better off building around Quarry with DEX/EGO/INT or DEX/CON/INT and Concentration vs. Form of the Tempest. Those builds have high DPS and pretty good survivability.

I put this together kind of quickly, I think it's close to what I'd planned. The exact sequence of the powers may be off, but it can be rearranged as needed.

It's not been much fun to play, as I said. Any thoughts or advice would be welcome.

that is one istance of concept vs game effetciveness. The real Batman too is very squishy: a single bullet or a knife thrust could end his career forever and send him to kindom come. On the other hand Batman is a loner (even when he is with the JLA )So you could say that yours was the perfect Batman, that was lacking only in one thing: he had not the writher on his side
I have tried the Night Avenger AT and he is very good if you use him like he is supposed to be used: a stealty AT(I underline stealty) that sneaks on foes to do a lot of damage but is no good to face a strong adversary in a long battle (he is not a behemot ). Old time players of CoH have no doubt recognisezed the Stalker archetype and he is very close at the WoW's rogue.

If you could get enough Questionite, you could buy the Armadillo gear from the Q-store. I'd recommend just the 3 pieces of secondary gear. That will give a 25% damage resistance which will make the dodge/avoid feel much better.

I'm a fairly new player, so I'm no expert or anything like that, but I'm going to post this so you can see what you think of it.

I changed Ego to Con for more survivability.

I changed Throwing Blades to Ricochet Throw and moved Crippling Challenge there. Ricochet Throw is quite flexible, with it being single target on the tap and AoE on the charge. Also, the range will let you use Crippling Challenge at distance. That might be handy in PvP. I have idea as I don't do PvP. If you don't PvP, you should drop it and use the 3pts for something else.

I replaced Resurgence with Bountiful Chi Resurgence R2 with Resurgent Reiki as that is an excellent heal for crit based characters.

I noticed you didn't have an Active Offense, so I put in Ego Surge with Nimble Mind. Having Con as a secondary should make the crit bonus nice. For more survivability you could replace this with Resurgence with Evanescent Emergence.

I put in Masterful Dodge to increase your survivability.

I changed the last tree to Vindicator to keep the focus on your crits while still giving you some additional healing from enemy defeats.

I hope you find this to be at least somewhat helpful.

Pretty much the way I feel. With Quarry, Evasive Maneuvers and Elusive Monk (Parry) I can reach 100% dodge and 70% avoidance easily, and that's with just Rank 2 Evasive Maneuvers mind you.

The change with dodge mechanics and On Alert making dodge easier to attain has made Lighting Reflexes trivial. You're better off taking some other passive defense and stacking dodge with it. That or taking a passive offense and mixing damage/survivability.
