Installing to a different directory

I have had CO installed to the non default directory (C/Program Files/etc). It is still in a different directory, along with the launcher.

Its been about 2 months since I logged into CO, and now trying to relog, it wants to "repatch" the whole game to the default directory..... That is very... dumb. Why is the Launcher unaware of the directory to which it is installed, and thus, is too poorly programmed to recognize it should be looking at its own directory for the game? And how can I force it install to the directory I want?

    Interesting...

Are you sure it's reinstalling to a new directory?

Let me explain. I did a reinstall of my computer a few months ago when I got an SSD. The SSD is too small for all my gaming files, so I moved them (via copy/paste) to my D: drive. I then redirected my desktop shortcut to the new location. When I started the game it acted like it went through a full new download and install, but it used the D: drive directory and folder. It did not install anything on the C: drive. This occurred for both CO and STO. Once completed I had no issues with running either game from the D: drive...

Check you Programs folder to see if an actual new Cryptic folder is being created. If not, it's probably just reinstalling to your chosen location...

Yes. When I noticed it said it was patching 8 GB of files, I immediately went to Program Files and saw an entry for Cryptic Studios (which probably wasn't there before; I probably would have deleted it, but couldn't remember if I did or not). I deleted it. Ran the launcher again, and Cryptic Studios' entry came back. I right clicked, properties, file size several times and saw it growing in size as the launcher "patched" the game.

Odd, yeah, that's certainly not right if the launcher isn't updating the folder where it's installed. You may have to let it fully reinstall and then cut/paste the whole folder to the desired location. Just make sure you redirect your desktop shortcut to the new location as well...

Perhaps someone else may have a better solution. Good luck!

So I found a download link for the launcher itself (as of Jan 3 2013), and used that. It STILL wants to install to the default directory. There has to be some obscure pref/ini file that controls the default behavior of the launcher, but I don't know where it is.

This is very annoying as my boot drive is a small SSD that I can't afford to be installing games to.

Oddly enough, when I upgraded HDs, I just shovel-dumped my CO and STO folders from my old drive to my new one (not in Program Files mind you - just c:\Cryptic Studios) and it worked happily without any issues.

Did you try to run the game through Steam recently? I know that changes a few things around.

start > type regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Cryptic > choose your game > edit install directory entry.
