Police Protection Cut by MCPD

By Michael Scott Beck
mcbeck@mcfreepress.com

MILLENNIUM CITY - In better times, MCPD Chief Surhoff's patrolmen had time to give an occasional tour of their precinct stations. Now, with new priorities and threats on the horizon, they don't even have time for police protection.

Court records show that there have been 591 applications for police protection in the past two months. Only two have been granted, compared to 56 of 122 applications the preceding two months. According to applicants like professor Dr. Kaspar, this change is endangering the public.

"I've been followed to Millennium City by whatever attacked my research team in Java. And when I get here - the police say they can't help me!" says Dr. Kaspar. "They told me that other public safety needs take precedence."

When asked to comment, Chief Surhoff pointed out his window at the holographic billboards in the Renaissance Center.

"In the past two months, we've had an alleged return of Dr. Destroyer, a Destroid attack on the UNTIL skycarrier, undead and animated toys running through the streets of Millennium City, and yet another Gravitar rampage," Surhoff said. "We don"t have enough uniforms for that kind of around-the-clock personal protection."

Instead, he said, the MCPD is focusing its efforts on increased patrols and preparing for supervillain attacks. The MCPD has also been working closely with PRIMUS and UNTIL to stay alert for any possible threats to Millennium City.

Chief Surhoff did note that UNTIL and the Indonesian government are investigating Dr. Kaspar's claims, and added that Dr. Kaspar was not a person of interest in the attacks on his team.

The story here should be done as an in game cinematic at the prison when you speek to the police sheif under the tent.So should all the upcoming story parts as weeks go by for the final climax.

You know, when you get down to it, this is the sort of issue I'd expect random citizens to run up to my heroes and beg for help with. "I brought a mysterious idol to Millennium City for the museum, and now a dark cult is after me!" The folks complaining obout random suspicious types breaking into a warehouse, I more expect them to call the police tip hotline, and my character pick up on that over the police scanner.

Java? It's almost certainly Destroyer-related, which they hint at in the piece.

Makes me think more and more about my Indonesian UNTIL Agent concept.

OK, the new guy is confused. Is this some change in the in-world behavior of the police? The beginning of some new set of missions? Flavor only? Removal of some police sidekick I'm unaware of? What's up?

    100% flavor.

Though with thousands of heroes out there do the police really deserve to have as much funding than they have in the past?

I mean our heroes are the ones doing all the work, and the police only show up for one mish that I can think of. :D

Yup. King Pong. The police are more like the traditional cavary in old TV westerns in that mission.

The few places that they are located throught the city, mostly West, they can be helpful. If the bad guys are a little too tough, drag the tough ones to the cops for a bit of support. It's kind of amusing because I have even watched paramedics lend a hand for this tactic.

But then again, we Super-Heroes would be "out of a job" (and there'd be no game) if the police could handle all of the problems the Super-Criminals tossed there way.

Oooh story stuff! And relevant with a bad economy too

    +1 for TrailTurtle

    This makes sense.

The police are the legal law enforcement, the "superheroes" are more likely to be painted as illegal vigilantes.

Plus if a superhero blew up your car "in combat", you'd be a bit mad wouldn't you?

Worse some of you go around breaking things "for fun", right?

See how the real bad guys might easily turn things around to make you seem like the bad guy? Maybe (like one of my characters) you appear to be evil but are actually kind & gentle, or appear to be sexy and charming but are actually cruel and malicious. There's a lot of room for questions.

I think there a lot of potential for expanding into a bit social commentary here along with the story flavor TrailTurtle started.

In the real world, a lot of metropolitan governments have decided to reduce police and fire department funding, or that of certain social services.

And one my favorite story plots in role-playing games are those that require you to make hard choices (where there isn't a clear right & wrong) and there are consquences (people get killed or hurt, a particular faction becomes hostile, etc.). This is something Bioware often does (happens multiple times in the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series).

The thing is, the police *do* have better equipment than just uniformed officers w/ pistols - they have at least a few power armor units (can be found guarding the superjet of all things), and they do have some swat/more heavily armed units. I'd at least like to see units in hot zones changed to be wearing better equipment - maybe armed w/ shotguns or SMGs as well. The regular uniformed cops should really on be in the "normal" neighborhoods.

Actually aren't those power armor suits guarding the jet made by PRIMUS or UNTIL? I think that's only because Defender's team, The Champions, has connections that they're there guarding the jet.

My bigger question is why are there computers outside of the powerhouse exposed to the elements? The ones Defender is standing around. I mean, unless Millenium City is in a Desert (which it's not), it's going to rain & snow on some days.

Don't forget the occasional citizen with the "beer bottle o' doom" attack. Seriously, we need that available in game.

Actually, I think they're owned by MARS, the armored branch of MCPD's SWAT team. We don't hear much about MARS.

When i made the pen&paper version of Dr Cerebellum i was looking through the senses powers and discovered the ability to hear radiowaves! Seeing as Dr Cerebellums senses are all electrical this was perfect, so the good Doc can hear all those police channels! And better because of an advantage i bought, can transmit too! Not just talking back to the police, also projecting her mad-scientist-laugh into the radios of stolen cars.

The images power, with a sufficiently large area, for the radio sense group, with a limitation for one effect, could be used to make every police band transmission be heard in your voice. Every transmission sent by a dispatcher or individual officer would sound as if it were you making the transmission, perhaps with your signature, "mua-Ha-Ha," tacked on at the end.

'Caine, miss you bud. Fly high.

The best answer to this question is: look at the world they exist in.

An atomic bomb going off within 30ft of you has zero effect on your ability to live.

You can run through the Canadian wilderness in nothing but a speedo with no adverse effects to your health.

You can shrug and go for a brisk jog after getting perforated by a guy in a purple suit wielding a tommy gun.

I think the computers in Millennium City will be just fine.

It's funny that you should say that. The old Tutorial used to have a mission that you could pick up just that way. You got the Mission by clicking on a Police Car, but instead of hearing police chatter, you got a call for help from Kinetic who was tapping into the police frequencies. He tells your hero that he has been captured by a really big Qularr and that he needs to be rescued in a hurry.
