Squisht Blade needs help!

Long time CoH player here. My favorite characters in that game were always Scrappers and Brutes, and since my main was a Broad sword scrapper, I remade him as a Blade AT. For the most part, I'm enjoying it, but I'm finding him much squishier than I'm used to.

I want to keep the character a Blade, so he doesn't get locked if I drop to Silver for any reason, so Freeform isn't an option, as much as I'd like to. With the limited options I'll have within the AT framework, what can I do to boost survivability?

On a related note, I'm having trouble wrapping my head around Offense, Defense, Avoid, Resist, Dodge, etc, etc... Are there any good guides to understanding what all these numbers mean and how they interact?

Edit: Can't edit topic titles? Dangit, I meant "Squishy".

Like most likely everyone started/played as Blade first, before On Alert i kinda gave up on it and played Inferno instead, both fragiles but at least last one is more range. But after On Alert when had more way to equip and grind , with Specializations AT became a little better, too bad Blade AT doesn't have any healing not even in specs, so have to focus on defeating the enemy fast and maybe focus on Dodge/Avoidance to survive more.

Well, i don't know much, i just learn more looking at Guides and Forum, actually is easier to learn basing around guides, but the you'll get spoiled.

My first character coming from CoH was a Blade as well -- to recreate my katana/willpower scrapper. Unfortunately, kat/WP was CoH on easy mode, and the Blade is anything but easy mode -- squishy as a blaster, needs to be in melee range so easily aggroes extra mobs, no heal... :frown:

I hate to tell you, but I shelved that character at 18 -- at which point she already had the Perk title "Ex-Parrot" (100 defeats).

I remade her as a freeform, with Con as one of her stats instead of Strength, and adding Bountiful Chi Resurgence (heal) and Evasive Maneuvers (threat wipe). I also borrowed Sword Cyclone from dual blades for the amazing AoE maintain. Much more fun to play.

I know this is no help to you. Perhaps there are die-hard AT players who have some tricks for the Blade, but I found it unplayable.

I have a LOT of defeat perks, but my Blade IS level 40. I just really, really hate how easy it is to rack up those defeats.

I may choose a different AT for my second Silver character and upgrade to a Freeform. I'll have to see what I think of the other free ATs first.

You might consider one of the premium ATs -- at 1150 zen they're cheaper than a FF slot, and some of them seem to work quite well out of the box.

My second character is a Void, who I chose to keep as the AT in case I need to drop to Silver for a bit. She is plenty sturdy, can heal herself with Life Drain, and is fun to play. Quite a good approximation of a dark/dark defender/corruptor.

There's a decent build here for the Blade AT. I'd suggest focusing on the talents that give you Con before the Super Stat-only talents as you level since it takes a while for your decent powers to show up. This build also assumes that you want to do PvP, but I figure if PvP doesn't interest you you can put the points for Nailed To The Ground elsewhere.

Gearing and modding is very important for squishies. While the impulse is to jack up your super stats in the hopes of making your DPS so high the squishiness doesn't matter, you just can't get it high enough to keep bosses from splatting you. Unlike the Inferno, you don't have a safe distance to work with. So gear for defense and hit points to bring you up to par.

Buying some heals doesn't hurt either, but the cooldown is so long as to make them useless beyond being a Hail Mary tactic.

To be honest. Free Form is where it's at... it's probably the only way you'll recreate a perfect blade toon.
