Adventure Forge. No, really

OK, so it's been said before; players would enjoy the ability to create instances. Here's a suggestion on how it could work. The first thing would be to make instance creation easy. Four step system, where it's either a simple choice, or some creation recognized by ongoing players.

Step One:What. What type of mission is the instance. Is it a find the baddie? Escort the NPC? Find and collect?
Step Two: Where. creators could set the where on this button. Warehouse? Vault? Science Lab? Perhaps each would have a different map, or perhaps the game could seed different rooms with the decor to match the chosen setting.
Step Three: Who. Here, the creator would take a generic villain, and seed the map with them. Same set as with nemesis, so they already exist. It's important to note that the creator wouldn't actually be placing the henchmen in the map. They'd just be saying what the minions are, and the program would place them.
Step Four: Why. Here you add custom type for reason, as well as reward. Not in a way that unbalances, btw. You can't build an easy instance, and pack it with expensive rewards. Instead, based on the difficulty of the instance, the engine would give you options of: Better XP, items, or maybe both.

That would cover the basic, or the silver version of the Forge. For Gold, or for a small amount of zen, the instance could be greatly improved. Perhaps instances could be linked, creating an adventure. Perhaps a main villain could be created, similar to the Nemesis builder.

Finally, the instances, or adventures, could be set to public, private, or supergroup. Public instances could be dropped into a menu button, and tried out by any players. Private would be invite only, and Super Group would be available via, well, supergroup settings. Again, setting to private or super group could cost zen.

See, the brilliance of Private and Super Group would be its use by RPers. having instances and adventures that were ongoing to self created plot points would be a major sales pitch to RP players, and a draw for similar players to join a super group. Private teams, or full Super Groups could also use this to create ongoing villains and story arcs for, again, their own personal stories.

Even when the target market is not RPers, the Forge system lets them have something new. Also, as many of the instances would be public, even those not actively making instances would have continual access to new content. Content that is player made, which is in itself a game sales point. Content that to PW is completely free, or better yet, content that players are paying to create for them.

SHORT FORM: characters could use a simple system, that does little to tax the game engine to create instances for themselves or for friends. For a zen cost to keep PW happy, these instances could include custom villians, or be linked to make a full adventure. Finally, they can be set to be either public, or again for a small cost, private or super group only. PW and Cryptic win by having continual new content. Players win by having control of the events effecting their avatars.
Everyone wins; except for DCUO.

Also, it's called a Foundry. I know, I just couldn't pull the word up in my brain when I wrote this.

If everything is effectively autogenerated with just a few parameters given then I can live without it, and it sounds like that is what you are suggesting.

If it would be closer to CoH's architect system then I would welcome it.

It is pretty much what I'm suggesting; mostly out of recognition that something bigger just isn't going to happen. I've only heard of the how the CoX one worked, and it sounds glorious, but lets face it, it wouldn't fly here. Many just don't think the system could handle it.

That said, lets face it, all the instances that exist are really just the same thing. Groups of three henchmen who get aggro when you hit one, spread out across a generic set of rooms and halls, with an end boss, or a set event. I'm just suggesting allowing the characters to set what that set of events is. The big draw would be player written reason you are here, and possibly a custom villain.

Yeah, it's not much, but it's more than what we have. More so, it's a simple enough system to set in that the one or possibly two devs currently running CO could implement it with little coding. Seed system with a revamped nemesis attachment? I have faith they could do it.

If we get the Foundry, THIS PLEASE! My Iron Wolves have a storyline of their own and I would like nothing more than to give my members some juicy content to play around with...

This is an excellent idea. I really do hope that Champions will incorporate a Foundry of their own. That would be possibly the most exciting new content in a very long time.

I agree. With City of Heroes gone, Champions Online REALLY needs to step up its game, and that includes fresh content, and providing the sort of things that CoH did. This would be a fresh breath of life for the game, as it could give us the chance to tell stories based on our own heroes--I'd love to actually give my Nemesis villains dialog that actually relates to the concepts I had in mind for them.

And Cryptic and PWE REALLY need to start listening to these forums. I know they're supposedly busy with NeverWinter Nights, but that shouldn't mean you neglect your current customers!

Semi-official word is still that the Foundry in STO was more or less a beta, that they'll be testing the full version in NWO, and if it works out they'll start working on porting it into CO.

I really hope that's the way it works out, because now I've got four stories I want to tell using it - and only one of them is an adaptation of a tabletop game I ran...
