Dr. Montblanc's build is made to provide extremely solid shields to dedicated targets. Being able to give his allies a temporary buffer of around 7000 health, he is also able to use his Bionic Shield to provide huge bursts of health when the target is hit, as well as heal non-aggroed targets for around 10,000 health when his Mindful Reinforcement carries through. The goal here was to make a technology-themed support character, ultimately underplaying any sort of "supertech gloves that heal crap" stuff.

On the offense, Monty's a bit underwhelming, relying on some laser rifles to hit at range. It's preferable to give him a bit of critical-hit offense gear, given how his specializations work. When attacking, use those on-hit devices with reckless abandon on boss targets, because if anything, the attack selection he has is made for debuffing. Ultimately, though, the attack selection detailed here is completely interchangeable with something else. It's much more about his defensive and healing abilities.

His passive, Aura of Radiant Protection, means that he's quite resilient to big bursts of damage. This is good because his shields will most likely need to be utilized on himself in the cases he does accidentally take a hit. Thanks to the passive, his teammates receive similar boosts to their defense, meaning that you might very well end up being the person taking the most damage on a team with this build. Not to worry, though, because you are very good at protection!

It's highly advisable you make a bind that activates both Protection Field and Mindful Reinforcement at the same time. Use this bind on targets taking damage, plop a Bionic Shield on them, and watch them instantly recover.

Because the build was mainly made stand up to Gravitar, his revive, Resurrection Serum, was chosen tactically to be a 'fire and forget' utility. This ability revives your target with 75% of their health intact, so you can just get them back on their feet, give them a light shield, and get back into the fight.

Tied to the above point, his choice of Energy Slide as a travel power is very important in combat. Because it maintains a huge amount of its speed when attacking, its probably one of the best choices for ground mobility in a fight requiring a lot of evasion. If you don't want to get energy slide, I'd recommend choosing a super speed variant instead. It's ultimately the slippery feel of the slide, combined with an above-average leap that enables it to be so useful. Use this mobility to your advantage:

Gearing Preferences:
  • First-Priority stat: Presence
  • Second: Ego
  • Third: Intelligence
  • Offense preferences: Heal+ for dedicated healing, Criticals for offense
  • Defense: Some health+, but mainly focus on high defense scores.
  • Utility: Balance of Recharge speed and Efficiency.
  • Role: Hybrid when soloing, Support when on any sort of team.

I really like this build, but the character I was planning to use it with is more of a cybermage than a gadgeteer, and him holding a gun just looks wrong. So I was thinking of replacing the offensive powers of the build with electricity. Would that be plausible, and how would you recommend going about it?

Yeah, perfectly plausible! You could either continue to focus the build on debuffing/stunning enemies and keep MSA, Sonic Device, and Shrinking device on hand, OR you could become more offense oriented, using electric attacks with no stuns.

If I were to make such adjustments, the changes I'd make to a build like this would entail:
    • Change Superstats to PRE/Ego/End
    • Change Energy Unlock from MSA to Ionic Reverberation
    • Work in Ball Lightining, Lightning Arc, and Gigabolt. Ball Lightning really helps with energy (esp with triplicity) while Lightning Arc and Gigabolt are the most solid attacks for Single Target and AoE damage, respectively
    • Alternatively, you could also work in Lightning Storm with Stolen Thunder for a good control attack against mobs, knocking a bunch of enemies down.

Yeah, that looks about right. I'd switch out Chain Lightning for something else, though, because it's a downright underwhelming AoE attack compared to stuff like Lightning Storm and Gigabolt. that and it's basically now a really crappy ricochet throw.

My suggestion would be to put Ionic Reverberation in its place, then fit another good AoE in the later slot that's freed up by that.

I made a dual pistols version for my rocketeer character by replacing the first three powers with:

    Gunslinger,
    Two Gun Mojo
    Killer Instinct

    It works well!
