Cannot connect to patch server.

I'm making this one quick, ever since the previous patch, I haven't been able to even open the CO launcher. It makes 2 attempts, and then says it cannot connect to the patch server, I -know- this isn't a problem coming from my side, as nothing else is affected. Does anyone know when and how this can be fixed? I'm naturally really ticked off with Cryptic's patches breaking more than they fix.

Have you run a tracert to patchserver.crypticstudios.com to see if the path between you and the server is clear? If it is, then there's something wonky with the patching process. If it isn't there might be something gone wrong after you, and before them.

How would I go about doing that? I'm hardly a computer whizz, so please excuse me if I seem a bit simple.
And what should I be looking out for when I run the trace?

You didn't look for similar issues?

To run a trace, open up the Windows command prompt (Run, then type in cmd).

    Once there, type in:
    tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com

You'll end up with a screen full of times in milliseconds, and internet addresses. What you're looking for is any that have abruptly large numbers in the time columns, or any that time out and leave an asterisk behind. These usually indicate a hiccup somewhere in the pipe.

And Aiqa's linked thread will also hopefully have some solutions for you.

Thank you, I'm discussing it now with a close friend who's godly (in this ignorant peon's mind) at computer stuff, this'll help a lot, and yes, I've been watching the thread Aiqa linked since it was first posted, none of the answers made any sense to me sadly.

There's another useful tool called Nettest that can be used to detect potential connection issues with CO. You can get it here:

    http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe

The results for your Nettest should be something where the values in columns #1 and #3 should be around 500, give or take. Column #2 should be around 20 or so. If there are any seriously off numbers, if may indicate blocked ports in a firewall or filtering being performed by an service provider.

That looks like a nice tool. They should update it to include all ip addresses used, not just 208.95.184.10.

Yep, checked out the numbers and..they are waaaaay off, first and third column being well below 500, and the second column fluctuating between around 40 and 20.

Yeah, I don't think the tool is really maintained now, but it can still come in handy in some circumstances.

To make the traces a bit easier, download this.
If you run that .bat file it will create two text files, copy/paste the content of those here (that is if you still need our help ).

Again dying at/after cogent. Emeraldfusioncoh already asked cogent themselves in the thread I linked, and they said it was not their fault. If that is true cryptic needs to fix this, and if it is not they would be wise contact cogent, a lot of people have these same issues.

So what is probably best, is to send a support ticket to cryptic, or maybe your ISP can help. In the meantime you'll have to make due with a vpn if you want to play.

Alrighty then! Thank you a whole bunch for helping. Hopefully I won't need to use the VPN for long, but with Cryptic's history with fixes, I'm not going to hold my breath. Ah..rant over, thanks again everyone who lent a hand (Special love to Aiqa)

I've been having the "Tried connecting..." issue since august.

This morning i read on the Perfect World forums about someone googling hotspotshield, downloading the free version and using that to use a different IP address to bypass whatever is blocking players.

After turning hotspotshield on i still had the issue but after turning it off and restarting my computer, I accepted the IP address hotspotshield asked to connect to.

At first I had the ususal "Tried connecting.." nonsense I've been getting instead of the launcher connecting and updating. It did eventually start though, just as I was ready to call it quits and just give up on Cryptic/Perfect World.

I posted on Perfect World forums about this and now hopefully what worked for me, will work for others.

Good luck to anyone still looking for answers.
