Glacier/Void Build?

edited October 2012 in Power Discussion
Hello, I just bought a FreeForm character slot and I was wondering if anyone could help me build a Glacier/Void freeform character (if such a thing is possible). My thoughts on the combo was that freezing and scaring the rectum discharge out of mobs was a good thing and might help this character become the ultimate tank.

If such a combination isn't possible, my next idea is to have either a Glacier/Specialist or Glacier/Devastator. I suppose Glacier/Mystic Power Set (any magic that summons creatures to feed on my opponents' throbbing bodies will do) is an option of the last resort.

Anyway, if anyone can provide some form of a power guide relating to the mentioned builds that I can follow, I would be very grateful and I will give you 12 Internet Cookies as compensation.

I've not really played ice blast, so I don't know what powers the Glacier AT has (or which ones you want and use the most); however, I can highly recommend you try out the web-based PowerHouse planner to pick and choose stuff. I am a big fan of Void Shift and Ebon Void from the Darkness set; both are very nice.

Also, the sub-section Builds and Roles within this section is good for build crafting and examples.

Sorry I'm not much help here.

    Thanks for the reply, r0y0!

As you recommended, I decided to use the PowerHouse planner and the results look like this:

    PowerHouse (Link to this build)

    Name:

    Archetype: Freeform

    Super Stats:
    Level 6:
    Level 10:
    Level 15:

    Talents:
    Level 1:
    Level 6:
    Level 9:
    Level 12:
    Level 15:
    Level 18:
    Level 21:

    Powers:
    Level 1: Shadow Bolt (Despondency)
Level 1: Void Shift (Emerging Nightmares)
    Level 6: Spirit Reverberation
    Level 8: Lifedrain (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 11: Shadow Embrace (Fatal Allure, Challenging Strikes)
Level 14: Ice Blast (Hard Frost)
Level 17: Ice Shield (Rank 2, Frigid Air)
Level 20: Avalanche (Rank 2, Rank 3, Challenging Strikes)
Level 23: Snow Storm (Eye of the Storm)
    Level 26: Unbreakable (Rank 2)

Level 6: Rainbow Flight (Rank 2)

    Specializations:

Yeah, it's missing a few things, but at least it's a start. I would appreciate any feedback on this Freeform outline.

The first thing I noticed is: you took your passive LAST, and it's Lightning Reflexes! Yikes! If you are leveling up, you'll want your passive + form + energy unlock as soon as you can (after a few attacks, of course).

Lightning Reflexes is not a strong passive as far as defensive goes. Most take Invulnerability or Defiance, I prefer Regeneration. There's also Personal Force Field, which isn't the best for a tanking type, IMO. For leveling up, Regeneration is really strong. Heck, I've tanked Gravitar with my regen tank.

Since you have FOUR maintains in your build, you might want to consider Overdrive as your energy unlock, instead of Spirit Reverberation. Also, you definately want to Secondary-Super-Stat RECOVERY. I'd say Ego / Con / Rec for this build, and gear/talent Dexterity.

Playing around in the PowerHouse, I came up with something like THIS - though, the specialization trees can be whatever you like, I just threw those in. Should be a decent tank/hybrid. I'm not terribly fond of ranged tanks, which is probably why I never did a "glacier AT" style toon, I'm more of a melee guy when tanking.

I did not include a FORM - as I do not know if Concentration (which is the defacto for most ranged builds) helps with things like Avalanche and Snow Storm. Otherwise, I'd put that in somewhere. Ice form is probably not as helpful, but it might be. This is the tricky part with Freeform builds, mixing and matching, then finding synergy in forms and passives...

Anyway, hopefully this will spark a discussion from those who know more about ranged tanks than I.

A part of me is almost regretting buying a Freeform Slot after spending over an hour on the PowerHouse planner. The mixing and matching of powers to find a balance is giving me a headache lol.

    Anyway, here's the newest outline:

    PowerHouse (Link to this build)

    Name:

    Archetype: Freeform

    Super Stats:
    Level 6: Constitution (Primary)
    Level 10: Presence (Secondary)
    Level 15: Recovery (Secondary)

    Talents:
    Level 1: The Scourge
    Level 6: Shrug It Off
    Level 9: Quick Recovery
    Level 12: Lasting Impression
    Level 15: Boundless Reserves
    Level 18: Prodigy
    Level 21: Amazing Stamina

    Powers:
    Level 1: Shadow Bolt (Despondency)
Level 1: Void Shift (Emerging Nightmares)
Level 6: Ice Blast (Hard Frost)
Level 8: Ice Shield (Rank 2, Frigid Air)
Level 11: Frost Breath (Frost Bite, Challenging Strikes)
    Level 14: Lifedrain (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 17: Bountiful Chi Resurgence (Rank 2, Resurgent Reiki)
Level 20: Lightning Reflexes (Rank 2)
    Level 23: Resurgence (Rank 2)
Level 26: Snow Storm (Eye of the Storm)
Level 29: Avalanche (Rank 2, Rank 3, Challenging Strikes)
    Level 32: Ice Burst
    Level 35: Overdrive
    Level 38: Unbreakable (Rank 2)

    Travel Powers:
    Level 6: Rainbow Flight
    Level 35: Acrobatics (Versatility)

    Specializations:
    Constitution: Unyielding (2/2)
    Constitution: Fuel My Fire (3/3)
    Constitution: Quick Healing (3/3)
    Constitution: Armored (2/2)
    Guardian: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Guardian: Ruthless (2/2)
    Guardian: Find the Mark (2/3)
    Guardian: The Best Defense (3/3)
    Warden: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Warden: Elusive (2/2)
    Warden: Reactive Strikes (2/2)
    Warden: The Best Defense (3/3)
    Mastery: Constitution Mastery (1/1)

The only reason I had Lightning Reflex was that I saw a YT vid of a Lightning Reflex/Bountiful chi (with adv) combo and it looked very tank-friendly.

As for the lack of offensive capabilities on the specializations, I decided to provide that through gear and such.

All I can say is: before you leave the powerhouse (in game), please read through the Builds and Roles sub-section and see what people are doing.

There are still some pretty significant errors with the build (i.e. always rank your passive to R3, take a form, etc). I'd probably not SS con, as gear can easily provide this...

Did you want to Range Tank or Range Damage as far as roles go? PRE should not be SS'd with this build, it's not worth the sacrifice just to get Life Drain boosted. All ranged heroes should have Ego and/or Dex in there (a critical life drain heal is better than a pre-boosted non-crit heal, in general).

As I mentioned earlier, I made this build for you to look at. You might see something you may have missed? (if you go regen, you'll probably not need lifedrain at all).

And if you MUST ss CON, then definately, regeneration is the passive for you! And resurgence is your heal.

I made a few modifications to your proposed build.

Void Shift, Snow Storm, and Avalanche will be used for mob sweeping, while Shadow Embrace and Lifedrain will keep the boss on me. As for the gear, I'll see If I can add some Pre mods so Lifedrain can do some serious damage (ie. just spam lifedrain on a boss for a minute to win).

Since I like using Lifedrain so much, if my modification is a fail, maybe you could just direct me to a Void Build that has an emphasis on Lifedrain usage.

    Thanks again for your help.

Overdrive gives you free energy when you use any power armor maintain or toggle for at least half the max
Taken from Pulsewaves Power Armor Rundown
Spirit Reverberation is the unlock that most suits your build, it triggers from attacking a feared enemy with dimensional damage and scales to con but will not do anything for avalanche and snow storm.

Shadow Embrace is an AOE attack just like Avalanche, the difference is it can be used on the move which if you're a squishy trying to hit and run is great. I'm not sure it's much use to this build.

All tanks have Crippling Challenge for single targets, Devour Essence from the infernal supernatural tree is kinda the ultimate CC power. It's a maintain, heals you, hurts the foe can be fired on the move and can have crip challenge... I hate that it's the best tanking power in the game. It will certainly fit the darkness sorta theme try swapping Lifedrain for this.

    Edit
Molecular Self Assembly is the standard cure all for energy unlocks - it scales off Int and Rec check the numbers on the tooltip especially if you do get rid of Shadow Embrace.

If it was me trying to do this I would go for Infernal and Ice they do the same kind of damage and are a bit easier to fold together. The Darkness aspect would be kind of catered for.
    It would have
Devour Essence w crippling challenge - very evil sort of attack you suck the life out of em
    Avalanche w challenging strikes
Defile for heavy STA at long range

Summon Shadows is good and thematic providing you got a bit of time to prepare before everyone lunges in.

Try to fit Masterful dodge in there as it is the best kind of Active Defence
Try to minimise the amount of attacks you have - if you have more than 4 plus energy builder that's usually too many.

Ok, now this is starting to look like an AoE tank, lol.

I miss Lifedrain, but I'll give Devour Essence a try. I'm guessing that DE scales off of Pre, so I'll still add some Pre mods to my gear (which were supposed to boost lifedrain).

    Thanks for your help.

Epidemic and Avalanche are both AOE's although there is much to be said for Epidemic it can't have challenging strikes... Suggest trading it for Defile or Masterful Dodge (everyone uses it so it must be good)

Please check the numbers on different Energy unlocks carefully and the tooltips on what they do.
Good luck with your FF build and for what it's worth I have personally deleted 3 x level 40s on the grounds that they were beyond saving.

Hmm starting to look good... To me (not the best builder who ever lived)
As you level up try things out as you go and especially with Avalanche see what it's doing to your energy.
Providing you can get close Devour Essence can only be out aggro'd by another higher rank devour essence. With this in hand you that is you will be able to get all the aggro of say for example a level 60 mega destroid. It's at times like that you start saying "Did I really want this?"
Avalanche is very nice on damage and an excellent CS candidate.
It sure would be easier if you only wanted a nice concept build, making it a functional tank as well does require a bit of concept sacrifice.

Unnecessary coz you knew already link

    One word - wow.

Tried this final draft (hope so, the modifications really burn through my time) on Battle Station [Purple Gang, team 3, hard] and I'm impressed.

I start things off with full Defile on middle man in mob, pop Void Shift, then Snow Storm/Avalanche (or Devour Essence for 1 opponent) and the mobs are gone.

I should also mention that I had no gear when running this through the Battle Station.

Added some Pre in talents so Devour Essence would pack more healing.

I pop Bountiful Chi once in a while, but as I got used to this build, I kinda ignored/forgot about the 3 active heals.

Tell me what you think about this build. Try it yourself on the test server if you're gold.

An update to my build is that Overdrive actually works better than Molecular Self-assembly (saw it in action in the training center).

I could use some advice on the talents section: Should I focus on the SS talents, spread the talents for Pre (to benefit Devour Essence), or spread the talents to cover Int and End?

By the way, this build is a textbook definition of a gas-guzzler, Overdrive can barely keep up. I'll have to add some serious Rec and End mods to my gear so I'll have a large pool of energy ready to use and more energy when Energy Builder kicks in.

So far, my favorite tactic to start off a one-on-one is to Void Shift, pop Defile, and suck away with Devouring essence.

I do believe that this is the build I'm going for.

I swapped Concentration for IDF (among other things) because I want this character to be a tank that focuses on being invincible while still being able to kill if it has to. DPS is probably low, but that's why there's DPS players. Let them deal with the damage-dealing.

I have to say that it's really fun to Void Shift, tap Defile and suck away with Devour Essence, and if it's still alive, spam Avalanche and Snow Storm to deal with it and anything unfortunate to be around it.

With these modifications, Overdrive works just fine and I have an easier time to deal with the mobs in the Battle Station. As I said earlier, I had no gear on when testing this build out and it was doing just fine. I think I'll leave the powerhouse now to buy gear and test it on Alerts.

I wouldn't really think these 2 together would be a really good choice anyway... neither of them really use the same passives ice would go with infernal more than darkness...

Fire, Ice, and Poison all benefit from the same passive
Ego, Darkness, and that healing spec forget name now go together...

You could go poison (Infernal Supernatural) and Glacier combined gives you option to get regen... also howl gives you a debuff that fears opponents also, you just have to read thoroughly through different powers and their advantages
