Fun factoid about the purple gang.

I was just researching the purple gang, because they're one of the only gangs in game I couldn't directly place as an homage or existing champions property, and I had a brain fart as to who the bad guy was before Kevin Poe. Anyway, during my search, I came across this fun little article:

http://apps.detnews.com/apps/history/index.php?id=183

Apparently the purple gang is actually a historical thing, and they dressed rather like our beloved punching bags do in game. Interesting thing, that. Figured I'd share. :)
In game, I am @EvilTaco. Happily killing purple gang members since May 2008.

Totally, I just had no idea. I always figured they were a bad mafia clone, I had no idea they were a real thing in Detroit. It's pretty awesome, devs apparently did some good research while building this.

True, but you never really expect something like THIS in an MMO, especially one about super heroes.

Yeh, made this discovery myself a long time ago. It was bugging me, "Why would they choose such a dumb name?" so I googled it.

As a native Detroit-area-er, I knew this from day one!

Also, there really is a RenCen in modern day Detroit. The Renaissance Center is the most prominent building on the waterfront, with three cylindrical towers. Sadly, we're lacking a PowerHouse though. I could use a respec. :P

Yep, I used to work in the RenCen, so meeting up with Defender there always amuses me.

Exactly! I'd suspect many people don't realize it's based on a historical Detroit gang.

LOL! I want a PowerHouse too!

Millennium City is actually a very well designed Zone. Same could be said for Canada or Vibora Bay actually. Wish we had a new zone out that's on the caliber of these others...

Be fair, the Desert and Lemuria are really well done too, it's just deserts are really boring, so all the detail they put into it doesn't really look like much unless you're looking for it.

Lemuria, on the other hand, is probably the most gorgeous zone in the game... if your machine can run it, and don't actually need to accomplish anything while there.

My personal favorite touch tho? The Cryptic offices in MC lol.

Full agreement on Lemuria being the most gorgeous. That's the only zone where the atmospheric feeling of being surrounded by the endless vastness of the undersea in my opinion has been truly achieved. Having a phobia of being underwater like that, I actually felt a little intimidated everytime I was there, lol.

Agreed in most part. Lemuria IS the most beautiful zone and I like the extra challenge of the third dimension that you find there, as mobs frequently attack from all sides. However, the lag issue is no longer present and I have no problem playing with my laptop with most graphic options on max. My only issue with Lemuria is the damn UNITY missions which send you into caves whoose location is nigh on impossible to determine :frown:

Set the mission as active, swim high above the seabed until you've reached the marker spot by looking at your mini map, then swim as vertically down as you can. I found that doing this lets me find the cave entrance much more easily.

Another Lemuria lover here. However I agree with location finding. I remember spending 3 days finding Stingray for Amphibian's mission. Even wiki help didn't do much good.

    Also Lemuria has Baelrath.

Thanks jennymach, I will try that. The best solution would be to mark the cave entrance and not the instance entrance. On the plus side it did mean I got the perk for finding all the caves in Lemuria ;)

Yup... the Purple Gang made up Elvis' whole rhythm section in "Jailhouse Rock", after all.

I just learned about the old Purple Gang the other day.

Also, I really like Lemuria, and I can get around fairly easily. It's one of my favorite zones in all MMOs, visually speaking.

Skyfire just got to Lemuria. So far, my only complaint is that Whats-His-Face the Heretic wants me to pick up some things from inside the big dome (the one you escort the Minnow from), and I haven't figured out yet how to get inside.

Well, that and it's hard to judge distances, so I sometimes wind up aggroing two or three groups at a time...

Unity Cave missions are easily found using the http://champions-online-wiki.com/ . They have map locations and screenshots that show you exactly which cave to use to reach the mission doors.

There are blown out panels in the doom. That section is flooded. Just look for the holes in the doom and swim down.

    Hey Jon,

Actually it's not the same dome as the one the Minnow originates from. It's right beside it. As lordfuzon said, it's the dome with the shattered glass panels.

    Good Hunting!
