Sonic Power Set

Sonic shouts are one of the few types of powers that we should have by now.

Sure we have Unleashed Rage and Howl, but the enemy factions have screams that push players back, and even yodels that buff their allies. You would think with existing comic book heroes like Banshee, Siryn, and Black Canary, we would have more of this type of attack by now. There are All sorts of ways Sonic powers could be used like for example, a siren-like call that dizzies the opponent, a deafening screech that puts them in a hold, or even like the first two examples, a knockback power and a buffing move. Even animal calls could work.

An this is one of the major problems right there: Super Voices vs. Sonic Guns (possibly shaped like instruments)
Personally, I think the later should be Gadgeteering powers, while the actual Sonic powers would be an Elemental set. Or we could just wait for the emantion point overhaul.

Another problem is that you can't customize sound effects to match the voice you imagin your character to have. That would likely get handwaved by giving all the powers very generic sounds, like Howl and Unleashed Rage.

Oh, and one final note: Sonic powers should NOT knock the target! Sound waves don't work that way.

However, we are talking about the super hero setting in which sonic does in fact work that way. Heck, even in the game every enemy that has a shout attack pushes you back.

Sonic powers are, in my observation, one of the most requested new power sets on these boards. More than one person has even posted suggested powers that could go into the set -- myself among them (see below).

Besides the already-listed characters in comics, there are at least three established characters in the Champions Universe with vocal/sonic powers: Howler, Warcry, and Blue Screamer.

I agree with rokurocaris that sonic weapons should fall under Gadgeteering, while sonics based on voice would be its own set.

It took me a while, but I did manage to find the Sonic Power Set that I posted last May, cut-and pasted here:

Some of these Powers are based on stuff that's already in the game; the basic characteristics of these Powers can remain the same as what's in the links, with just name changes and other necessary alterations.

    Energy Builder:
    Sonic Blast

    Tier 0:
    Sonic Bolt

    Tier 1:
Lullaby (Crowd Control Power causing Sleep)
    Screech (PBAoE Sphere Maintain)
    Sonic Beam (100' Single-Target Maintain)
Sonic Boost (can add a Sonic pulse to any other Power, Sonic or otherwise)
    Sonic Form
    Sonic Reverberation (Energy Unlock)
Sonic Shield (Block -- increased resistance to Physical Ranged; Advantage has chance to Disorient nearby enemies)

    Tier 2:
Dizzy (Maintain, small damage but also Disorients, Advantage to go AoE)
    Howl
    Sonic Boom
    Sonic Mesmerism
    Thundershout

    Tier 3:
    Pulverize (50' Single-Target Charge)
    Shockwave
    Sonic Burst (100' AoE explosion)
    Ventriloquist (120' Single-Target Maintain)

    Tier 4:
    Shout of Rage

Technically, You didn't need to put Shout of Rage there seeing as the power you linked to is already a shout attack.

    Other than that, great ideas.

I may indeed be better to just move Unleashed Rage out of the Might Power Sets and into here; I included Shout of Rage in case the devs didn't want to do that.

Still, I wouldn't want it to be like Force just with a different damage type.

So, sonic weapons are Gadget. Sonic Powers would be in the Energy Projector category, right?

I'd like to suggest a power called Echo. It lasts twice as long as it is maintained but weakens as it goes on. Probably a 50 foot range 25 foot sphere aoe.

The only power I don't know about is what the energy builder for this set would be.

Just some ranged sonic pulses like most of the other ones, call it whisper or something.

I actually wrote out a sonic set a very long while back. It basically boiled down to a balanced energy-projector type that could work either by giving allies passive buffs, or could use harmonic shatters to deal burst damage.

    The Outline

Of course, it's ridiculously outdated and doesn't take into account stuff like Concentration and whatnot.

In any case, I'm all for a sonic projector set.

I agree that sonic should NOT knock, however... sound waves can still distort air pressure enough to push objects, so I wouldn't mind seeing a light repel added to SOME sonic attacks... ABSOLUTELY NO KNOCK OR REPEL ON ENERGY BUILDER!!!

If knocks must be present in the power set make them Knock DOWN only no Knock Back or Knock Up or Knock To....

I think the power set would benefit more from applying Stagger, Daze, or Confuse effects mostly. An indirect crowd control set, uses weak control types but its focus is more on the damage aspect, just has the added benefit of potentially befuddling your targets and hindering their attempts to silence you.

My suggestion would be something like Sonic Blaster, just with the Head/Palm/Fist/Chest emanation points instead of a gun.
