So the Nighthawk Vehicle devices are pretty cool, but I feel there are some things which would make them out of this world:
1. Add some flare - How about adding a couple "aerial manuevers" to the powerset? These actions would cause no damage, and would only be for show. Actions could include:
Barrel Roll
Loopty-Loop
Jet Trails - applys a thin trail of smoke from each wing
Afterburner (with a slight speed boost for 2-3 seconds)
Chaff (deploys mini flares, which if tracked by the missles from AA, will divert the missle
2. It would be really cool if there were a way, if you deactivate the plane in the air, your character deploys a parachute, and a slow fall.
Adding these things would make an already good travel device, great!

I'm thinking maybe pancakes." ~ John Casey

First off the jet already has two of your suggestions: Jet trails and afterburners (but it is a permanent boost on the jet, just press shift to do it) and secondly I do like the idea of chaff and barrel roll.
To start, I don't really like the idea of vehicles just being become devices. It leaves out a lot of the creativity and the fun of making a character. I feel like Champions would be better served by treating vehicles as TP replacements with some limited customization. Take hideouts for instance, limited customization but enough to get the feel of your character down. A system for changing the vehicles color scheme would be nice but a full blown vehicle creation system, like the character creation system but more limited, would be absolutely amazing. I realize this is probably impractical but I won't be using vehicles unless I can spot mine out of a herd.

This isn't the final vehicle system, the full one will be fully customizable but they will NEVER be travel powers
Make them bigger, at least by 25%, most of the characters don't fit in them at all desire. (I'm not talking about the Hulk's, even Defender-sized will not fit).
