Freeform Builds

About a year and a half ago I started a thread where experienced builders could post some of their favorite functional builds for others to see. The idea was inspired by some comments by players who found the potential to mess up a build, particularly in the face of fairly high retcon costs, to be somewhat daunting.

Hopefully a similar thread will be helpful now that the game has more options for great builds, and more opportunities to go astray than has ever been the case.

I know that this is a public forum, and I'll not try to tell you what to post here, but I do hope that the emphasis be on solid workable builds and not on nit-picking over what is optimal.

Some suggestions for posters:

1) Note it if your build is one intended to be retconned into at a later level.

2) Explain the idea behind the build and/or power selections.

3) Suggest gear options to best fit the build.

So, please feel free to show us what you got ; )

The goal here was to produce a survivable dual pistols character who can also deal at least halfway decent damage. It has worked out so far.

By stacking dodge and avoidance through Quarry and Primary Defense gear, Conviction on a low cooldown (3 seconds), the health on kill benefit of, "the Rush of Battle," spec in the Vindicator tree, while also pushing +defense through gear and talents, the character is very survivable. Add in the amazing kiting capacity of Breakaway shot and the self heal of the Stim Pack advantage on Hold-Out Shot for even more ability to handle tough fights.

With the damage buff from Quarry, along with that passive's ability to push Nomad's secondary superstats to respectable levels, and the effect of the secondary SS on both Concentration and critical severity, the character kills quickly.

I created Soulrazor during headstart back in '09 (remember when Shadowform Con/End were common for TK blade characters ?). I loved the look and style of Ego Blades then, and still do.

The goal in this iteration of the character was to produce reliable DPS for longer fights involving tougher foes such as bosses or mobs with the "Tough" template.

Traditionally TK blades centered around Ego Blade Breach as its primary damage dealer. More recently Ego Blade Annihilation has supplanted EBB in many such builds. I wanted to break away from those two for better energy management and more reliable DPS rather than high burst damage. For this purpose I chose Ego Weaponry for Soulrazor's primary single damage dealer and Ego Weaponry for its AoE.

Some might question the selection of Form of the Tempest over Mental Discipline. Though MD did provide slightly more damage than FoTT, the latter provided better energy management for longer fights
(when you are always at full energy you never have to worry about being able to fuel Conviction or any of your other powers)

With 5 stacks of Ego Leech, as well as the various specs chosen, Soulrazor has an 83% critical hit chance with Ego Weaponry. With his respectably high critical severity, FoTT, ID Mastery, and Offense (as well as the debuff from Ego Blade Breach) he generally crits for 2k+ with Ego Weaponry's first two hits and as much as 5-6k with the third.

The basic approach to a fight for Soulrazor is pretty straigh forward. Lunge in, causing a fear debuff to all adjacent foes, stunning the primary foe, tap Inexorable tides to temporarily disable foes, and then Ego Blade Frenzy to deal with trash mobs.

For Tougher foes its a matter of lunge > Inexorable > Ego Blade Breach x3 > Ego Weaponry spam (reapply inexorable and EBB debuff as needed).

This is my favorite Build for farming Unity, Nemesis or Alerts so far.

Until you can take Epidemic you should maybe take Venomous Breath for the first levels
to have an AoE, and retcon later.

    Superstats:
    Level 6: Super Dexterity
    Level 10: Super Recovery
    Level 15: Super Constitution

    Powers:
    Level 1: Infernal Bolts
    Level 1: Devour Essence -- Rank 3, Rank 2
    Level 6: Supernatural Power
    Level 6: Jet Pack
    Level 8: Invulnerability -- Rank 3, Rank 2
    Level 11: Epidemic -- Rank 3, Rank 2
Level 14: Form of the Tempest -- Rank 3, Rank 2
Level 17: Bountiful Chi Resurgence -- Rank 2, Rank 3
Level 20: Force Shield -- Force Sheath
    Level 23: Bionic Shielding -- Rank 2, Rank 3
    Level 26: Defile -- Rank 2, Rank 3
    Level 29: Masterful Dodge
    Level 32: Intensity

    Talents:
    Level 1: The Master
    Level 6: Quick Recovery
    Level 9: Shooter
    Level 12: Impresario
    Level 15: Martial Focus

Warden: Fortified Gear 3, Ruthless 2, The Best Defense 3, Tenacious 2
Vindicator: Merciless 3, Aggressive Stance 2, Modified Gear 2, Focused Strikes 3
    Dexterity Mastery

2 Powerpicks are still left, take whatever you want ;)
(i took Wind Elemental and Imbue)
Also .. Bionic Shielding isn't really needed if you mainly play
    normal Quests or Alerts.

    Gear :
Heroic Gloves of Precision with Gamblers Lucky Gem
Heroic Breastplate of Greater Might with Growth Amulet or Avoidance Plate with Gamblers Lucky Gem
Heroic Helmet of Utility with Gamblers Lucky Gem
    Mods : 3 x DEX, 2 x CON, 1x REC

Old Secondary Offense with Endurance on Kill if available (helps a lot for Defile Alpha Strikes)
    Garrison Bracers
    Friendly Eyepiece

Couple Things: I designed this build around wanting to solo content and have a certain look to the toon. That being said you can easily swap the lunge or the shield to another of your liking. For leveling I would move supernatural power and a lunge sooner. Talent for Dex/ Con/ Int & Rec. At lvl 40 you could drop INT for REC if you have cost reduction.

Very easy to stay alive with this build. VB henchies, Bite then Massacre anything else. Vile Lariat easily puts poison and bleed on target which feeds the extra healing on Devour Essence.

My Earth Build, for all the Epidemic haters. Yeah i know there is again Devour Essence
but that was mainly because i didn't really found a better Energy Unlock than Overdrive
and since that only works on maintains .. and i often prefer Maintains over charges *sigh*

Nonetheless you can also only spam Cave-In instead, and in Alerts i mostly do that

Thing here is, Quicksand is a nice PBAoE and Cave In has Damage nearly like Defile but with
much lower costs, so that even without a fitting Energy Unlock it can be spammed endlessly
at least at level 40, so it can be played really nearly as good as an Infernal.

Also .. the build has still 6 Advantage Points left

    [edit]
You can also take maybe Tremor as your second power, and later Force Shield or any
other "better" blockpower if you don't really want to have Imbue. Tremor is recommended
    for leveling at the beginning.

My Earth Build is new and the Infernal was at least updated with gear infos.

I also noted that there are really no earth builds to find anywhere :frown:

    Level 6: Regeneration (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 8: Supernatural Power
Level 11: Ego Sprites (Rank 2, Rank 3, Challenging Strikes)
Level 14: Ebon Void (Voracious Darkness)
Level 17: Quicksand (Rank 2, Challenging Strikes)
Level 20: Summon Shadows (Rank 2, Devouring Darkness)
    Level 23: Resurgence (Rank 2)
    Level 26: Shadow Shroud
Level 29: Form of the Tempest
Level 32: Circle of Primal Dominion (Rank 2)
    Level 35: Rebirth
    Level 38: Howl

    Travel Powers:
    Level 6: Fire Flight
    Level 35: Vine Swinging

    Specializations:
    Constitution: Unyielding (2/2)
    Constitution: Fuel My Fire (1/3)
    Constitution: Resilient (2/2)
    Constitution: Deflection (3/3)
    Constitution: Armored (2/2)
    Protector: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Protector: Beacon of Hope (1/3)
    Protector: Bulwark (2/2)

    Warden: Elusive (1/2)
    Warden: Reactive Strikes (2/2)
    Warden: The Best Defense (3/3)
    Mastery: Constitution Mastery (1/1)

Quicksand mimics how an aoe root attack might work. Its sphere of attack slowly grows and provides a Challenging Strike. Ego Sprites uses the insects that live on plants in a dot aoe Challenging Strikes attack. Summon Shadows is similar to how a temp plant pet might act.
The high Con with Regen and Devour Essence provides a very tough self-healing tank. Adding the 3 Secondarys of Armadillo Gear almost doubles the damage resistance provided by Regen and really helps.
Ice Barrier could be added to provide additional spike defense. It also roots the player, much like a plant power that adds defense might.

The character this build has on has been through a lot and this is the final build I've settled on for him.

Due to the innate talent this build takes, you only need 55 strength from other sources to get the needed 70. A lvl 5 mod works perfectly for this purpose.

Parry: This was picked up due to SS dex. Despite the DR from rating, it performs very admirably. In silver champ recog gear you should have around 55% dodge chance in an actual fight and 75% avoidance (avoidance primary defense, obviously) if you're using rank 5 mods. BCR goes nicely with this.

Nimble Mind is incredible in any build that has secondary CON. Having never used it before, I'm just stunned by how ridiculously well it scales.

I thought i'd repost this here, since I've been having a lot of fun with it. If you feel this build would fit your build directory, Kenpo, feel free to use it.

I posted this specific build at the request of an SG mate who wanted to have a closer look at it. Seraph can do a little of everything, but is strongest in controlling mobs, without resorting to the rather horrible Manipulator toggle.

This build pushes INT fairly hard, around 400 at 40 to get the most out of Battle of Wits. I raised PRE to 300ish, and CON to 200. This results in a decent HP pool (9k at 40) with shields sitting at about 2x 3.4K. When running in Support role, her stun duration is currently 6.2 seconds, with the cooldown of TK maelstrom at 5.6 seconds. This means you can chain 3 TK maelstroms for 18.6 seconds before hold immunity kicks in. That is more than enough to take out anything that can actually be affected by stuns.

NOT a levelling build. You can retcon into this level 23.

Eldritch Bolts, Shield: Powers chose to access AoPM early. I did level with this, swapping powers out along the way.

MSA: Energy unlock. Provides energy over time, scaling with INT, which we have gazillions of. Procced by 2 of our attacks Ebon Rift and TK Maelstrom, and Conviction.

Conviction: Nice little self heal. In Support provides about 2k per activation. With INT as high as it is, the Cooldown on this is neglible. Gives a 15% hp boost on activation, which can be utilised by Inequity. Since we got CON as a secondary, this boost covers Inequity's hp sacrifice.

Protection Field: Shield. Returns energy on being hit, long duration (20 secs).

Concentration: Ranged damage buff. Scales with INT. 16% per stack at 400 INT. Allows you to finish off whatever you stunned quick and easy.

TK Maelstrom w/ expansive intellect: 360 degree group stun that does decent damage. The cooldown's reduced sufficiently by gear and Lots of INT, fuels MSA when it comes of cooldown. The cooldown also prevents you from spamming it, which is a good thing. It keeps you from building Hold resist stacks on the goons too quickly.

Ebon Rift w/ Vengeful Shadows: A snare effect and knockback at the same time, giving you more control. If you don't like the knock you could remove Vengeful Shadows. Oh. Does really nice damage with those 16% Concentration stacks up too.

TK Lance: Hard Hitting, short charge single target attack. Quickly builds concentration stacks and uses the Ego Leech stacks that TK Maelstrom so kindly gave you.

Mindful Reinforcement: Another Shield that heals the target its on after it expires after 8 seconds. Lazy healing ftw!

Collective Will w/ Consume Will: A summon that increases your DPS and debuffs targets to your TK Lance. It also allows you to add a bit of DPS while you're focused on healing in group content.

Masterful Dodge: Emergency button. Rarely use it.

Inequity: Powerful single target heal. Sacrifices some of your own health to give a big chunk to your buddy. You have plenty of health to sacrifice, and that's mitigated by Conviction's HP boost. Just make sure you hit conviction before you give inequity a workout, and you'll be right as rain.

Redo of my old implosion build for the new setup. I'm running this exact same thing right now on one of my mains, and it's hella fun. Survives pretty well, too, considering how undergeared I still am. It's a solid off tank, and capable of main tanking just about anything short of Gravitar, if you pay attention. I *can* hold Gravitar pretty effectively, provided I get a bit of healing. It seems like this is gonna change drastically with some better gear, though, the amount of self healing this thing puts out is pretty nuts.

Note: for leveling? replace implosion with minigun (grab the advantage, u-238 rounds, and r2) and keep it stacked up at the top of the power list until you pick up plasma beam and chest beam. Early levels might be a bit slow, but the build really picks up once you get plasma beam.

    Protector: Bulwark (2/2)
    Protector: Exhausting Strikes (2/2)
    Protector: Defensive Expertise (3/3)
    Mastery: Protector Mastery (1/1)

So, the meat of this build lies in the orbital/implosion/nanobots/orbital combo, or as I like to call it? The implosion hammer. The football pulls in mobs, and then the 2 orbital cannons put a serious beating on them. Add to this the debuff you'll give with a few chest beam taps? that's 12% damage vulnerability added right on the top. As for the tanky side of things? IDF/invuln is pretty darn solid, especially against groups, and the occasional tap of force shield will make you see a lot of 1s pop above your head against all but the scariest mobs. You can also let your energy builder literally hit once and they'll do less damage to you for 10 seconds, thanks to exhausting strikes. I know there's some debate about if idf/invuln is overkill, given the layers of direct damage mitigation. I say, isn't that the whole point? Add to that the various procs this setup has for triggering a self heal, and you've got a pretty durable character. Note, however. You *really* wanna use masterful dodge/bcr as the first active defense you pop. Save resurgence for when you start to take a beating, since if they hammer you back down below 30% again, it'll open right back up. My live version of shock heals 3/4ths of his health, give or take, over a second or 2 if I time it right. I also wanna point out that between conviction, resurgence, bcr, nanobots/rejuvinating, and protector mastery? This pretty much always has a button available to heal a few thousand hit points on the drop of a hat. It's actually got a pretty fun panic combo: conviction, masterful, BCR, nanobots, conviction, bcr, about 10 seconds or so later: resurgence. Sure, your damage is gonna suck from double stacking bcr, but that combo could heal Grond. Hilariously, doing that fills up your whole energy bar instantly, because why not? Thankfully, I'm pretty sure the damage penalty from bcr doesn't count for pseudo pets like the implosion hammer. At the least, I've not noticed a serious difference.

The one intangible about this build that I really have to stress is how very FUN it is. The implosion hammer is a heck of a light show, and this thing is *fantastic* for farming.

You're gonna wanna gear for dex/pre/con/int, spreading it out pretty evenly, if a bit heavier on the con. Adding some dodge would be a great thing, too. This thing just gets more effective the more defense you can stack (since it adds to offense, too, but beware of the soft cap) and the more dodge you can put on it. You're probably gonna wanna look into getting a nimbus of force, too. It's a handy oh crap button for when your defensives are down and you're waiting for protector mastery to finish its cooldown, but wanna let conviction do its thing.

I pretty much just picked travel powers for pure speed. Those are totally optional, except for teleport. In my experience, this character and teleport are kinda shaky. Any power that restricts you from triggering conviction before the fight is a bad idea, since you'll be hurting for energy from the very beginning.

Edit: swapped debilitating challenge for exhausting strikes because I'm apparently illiterate.

How does everyone post their builds? I tried going to the "PowerHouse (Link to this build)" link, but the page I get taken to just has a sort of generic layout, and nothing I click on works except the links at the top. And even when I reset and go directly to:

I can't figure out how to get the "application" to function.

Once you put your build together, use the 'export' function at the top, which will take you to a page with the build in HTML format. Copy and paste this into a new post.

Thanks for the reply. I saw the Export option, but it's the "putting the build together" part I can't seem to get working. I click on Edit. but nothing on the Edit page appears to be working. When I click on things "Primary Super Stat" and "Power 1" nothing happens. I'm expecting a pop-up or drop-down or otherwise some sort of list of choice to select from, but I don't get that and I can't manually type in anything either.

    * Edit: I tried again, and I was able to click on name and type in a name. But that's the only field that seems to be working.

Particle damage? Particle damage. I love the new power armor beam attacks, so I wanted to try to make the best use of them possible.

First: you have to set your camera to turn to face the enemy. It's one of the first options in controls, but I can't remember which off hand. Something about strafing instead of turning, is the tooltip.

This will track, to a large degree, on the z axis. Once you pass about 30 degrees it seems to lose it, unless you're on the ground. It seems to track better that way, for some reason. For the record, tho? The animation is lying to you. The damage does go off at higher or lower elevations. I've been keeping track. Grab a flight power and tap chest beam more often, if they're at many elevations. Orbital's advantage, tho, only tracks past the first spike if they're on the ground.

I've parsed this at a burst of over 14k contiunous dps (with an initial 24k spike over a second) when the crit gods were happy with me (and with full concentration stacks) over the span of 4-5 seconds. Even low dps, with all cooldowns running and 1 stack, It's throwing about 5kdps until it spikes. I'm not geared yet, only +105% severity, so these numbers will probably skyrocket, as will the defenses. It's sturdier than it seems it should be, for how much of a cannon it is. It pretty much has to be, since when it starts doing damage, it *will* strip threat from just about anyone.

It's not entirely a leveling build. I pretty much use minigun, invuln, and micromuni to get the job done until I hit level 14, at which point I pull em off the top of the stack and plug in the build.

Vindicator: The Rush of Battle (3/3)
    Vindicator: Mass Destruction (2/3)
    Mastery: Dexterity Mastery (1/1)

Ok, nuts and bolts and synergies.

    ****energy management:
    - Electric form increases regen and equilibrium. A lot.
    - Molecular self assembly procs often from the various cooldowns, and nanobots will immediately kill your heal cooldown/give you energy/unlock another orbital cannon.
    - power swell reduces the costs of your maintains when they crit. And they will. Often.

    ****self heals/defenses:
    - Conviction cools down for me about every 2.5 seconds. Again, not heavily geared. It probably gives an 8th of my hp back.
    - Masterful dodge and bountiful chi resurgence. Because instant "please don't hurt me" button. As long as it works. Hit this and block and this build is very hard to kill.
    - Resurgence. For when blocking and conviction aren't doing it and masterful still has 30 seconds.
    - You heal every time you kill something, or someone attacks you with a single target attack. The second doesn't happen much. The first happens a LOT. I designed this to have a constant stream of hp coming as long as it was operational.

    ***tactics:
Always use conviction to start the fight. Feel free to sprinkle in some chest beam taps wherever you can afford em.

    - combos:
orbital cannon and fire all weapons is downright absurd, with electric form. That's the combo that strips threat, because it pumps out so much damage over such a large area.

when fire all weapons is on cooldown, but you wanna keep putting out heavy damage, use an orbital cannon. Use nanobot swarm (giving back the fire all weapons faster), then use *anorther* orbital cannon (fueled by molecular self assembly proccing from conviction coming off cooldown, as well as orbital. Enjoy the free energy), Give a nice chest beam pulse (I go 25-50%, for the extra debuff time), then let loose with targeted plasma beam bursts. Tab will keep em in focus if you have your controls right, so the second one mob drops, be on top of the next.

When orbital and fire all weapons are on cooldown, or for smaller packs, partial or full chest beam charges followed by plasma beam maintains will more than do the job. You're not waiting long for a cooldown, anyway.

    ***numbers:
badly geared, with about 30%/12%/8% superstats, I'm critting regularly for 8-10k on the initial orbital burst, up to 14ish. Fire all weapons pings at 2-4k every .5 seconds, but it does go quite a bit higher. I can chest beam charge for 10k+, taps tend to go for about 2-3. Plasma Beam slowly ramps up damage as the crits build, averaging from 2kdps to 4k dps, the longer I connect with it. Concentration yields the higher numbers, this thing likes to keep pushing. My dps is reduced slightly by having to fire off conviction and nanobots to keep the machine going, not to mention scattered block times between salvos. Elite bosses don't harm the dps on this much, since the pings are so fast. Maybe take 2-3k off of the initial numbers, in Gravitar's case.

As a point of reference, after the attack starts, I can burn down the power house level 40 dummies in 2-3 seconds. Give or take. It's not a tank, but it can pretend for a bit when it draws attention. It is, however, capable of easily eclipsing shadow strike damage because of how long the sustained attack lasts, and the large area involved.

Stat dex/ego/int/end, and a tiny bit of rec. Crit severity is essential. A bit of con certainly doesn't hurt.
