Companion System

bjoernrbjoernr Posts: 110 Arc User
How does it work?

In the moment you reach lvl 15 a little window appears.
"New heroes could benefit from your experience. Check
the terminal in the renaissance Center for more informations!"

At this terminal you can create your first Sidekick/Companions.
A companions should get a maximum of five powers include the energy builder.
Energy Builder from start and powers with lvl 16/24/32/40.
Also your companion gets advantages Points. Enough to max all of his/her five powers.
Of course the game become easier when you have a sidekick so your hero gets a -30% HP and Damage Debuff

What does it need?

CO has already the Pet system, the powers and the costumes. I would love if they add different personalities like in the nemesis system. I think the system dont needs own missions and complex dialogues, but some one-liners would be nice. In SWTOR your companions say thigns when they get stunned in combat or have low HP.

Money!

++ Most things are already in CO and STO. Crytic "just" have to write codes.
++ Cryptic could sell a "Freeform Companion Token" for 10$ for silver players
++ Silver players would buy Archetypes for their sidekicks
++ Cryptic could sell more personalities like robot, Alien or ex-villain.
++ If you got a hideout you can have more sidekicks. Just one can follow you and the other are waiting in your hideout = peoples buy hideouts.

    Seriously... Go back to TOR.

    I really HATE companions.

However if you were to call them Sidekicks, then it'd be alright.

In STO, you got Bridge Officers for Away Teams... Makes more sense, they also don't back talk or do anything at all, except kill things.

Way to steal Biowares ideas .

Sorry I cant say anything nice about the OP's post because he has pretty much just lifted the explanation of companions from the TOR website.

I think its against rules to use that other mmo's full name here so I will stick with TOR if by some chance u dont know what that is google it then google TOR Companions then come back here and do this to the OP because he likes Star Wars.

Not loving the Debuff idea, besides some heroes want to work alone or with an actual team of players. Wouldn't they get annoying? With their little catch phrases? especially if they are voiced...

Sounds like it could be fun for some players but a "thorn in their side" for others to put it politely.

First off,DONT steal ideas from other games,
second, the sidekick system(not companion) is being worked on by the devs,it was in the Until Field Report. The report also said it would function more like but not completly the same as the bridge officer thing in STO.

I have never played TOR or STO so excuse my ignorance.

I would like it, if by companion play I could fill a team with my own characters from my own roster as NPC's, and they would lvl up at 10% of what the current PC levels up as.

That would give me a nerdgasm, but is unlikely to happen.

Even if I could fill a team with sidekicks that get made through something like the current nemesis system, that could be fun. (what? Batman totally has a team of sidekicks, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Huntress, Spoiler etc etc.)

One thing though, I do not want to feel like a sidekick is mandatory for every character.

History-lesson time from the old guy!

Back in AD&D 1e (it's a pencil-and-paper tabletop RPG, kids - ask your parents), when your character hit 10th level, they could acquire an appropriate "home base" - a warrior might have a keep, a wizard his tower, a cleric his temple, etc. This would automatically attract a certain (random) number of followers, some of whom could be minor characters in their own right; these minor characters could then accompany you on further adventures. Many Dungeon Masters ignored this part, as it was found that many players simply could not keep track of what three or four different characters were doing, especially without metagaming, while DMs tended to have too much to do themselves to run everyone's followers as NPCs.

So while this might have been used in TOR (wouldn't know, haven't played it), the concept certainly has a long, respected provenance in RPGs.

That being said, given the nature of this game, I'd much rather it worked along the lines of BOFFs, or even DOFFs (STO's Duty OFFicer system) than treating the Sidekicks as loyal hirelings who come along ALL THE TIME. Can you imagine a Takofanes fight with not only all those heroes, but every one having a Sidekick or two?

I just curled into a ball upon imagining having Iron Clad following me around like in the MI Crisis and talking me to death. That could make me leave this game... I couldn't take it.

But a custom, unlimited sidekick would be a cool Z-Store item. Or maybe you could unlock one when your hero turns lvl 40. I feel like lvl 15 is too early.

one thing you have to keep in mind, the game has to be adjusting to your sidekick to keep the game interesting enough BUT if the game forces you to take the sidekick with you the game begins to turn of allot of solo heroes.

ether the game adjusts when you have your sidekick or everything falls out of proportion.

true, they could adjust the spawn count for indoor missions. like they do for sto, 4 sks and you could count as a full team. and we can get a full team spawn count of enemies.

Bridge Officers. Duty Officers are a completely different system.

They're pretty standard MMO pets. They follow you around and fight with you. CO already has that in summonable pets and sidekick devices.

The difference is that they're customizable. Bridge Officers begin as items. You can either activate them to add the officer to your roster (Where you can edit their costume and name, but not race, gender or Officer type but that's probably not relevant to CO) or you can consume the item to teach one of their skills to an existing Bridge Officer on your roster.

Alongside regular experience you also gain Bridge Officer points which allow you to level up their skills and eventually ranks.

Sidekicks are being worked on and are sounding like they will be like STO's bridge officers.

Which is hilarious since STO seems to pretty much be phasing BOffs out. 19th February, 2011 was the last time there was a mission released that actually allowed you to use a full away team, and since then there's been a grand total of one mission where you could use one BOff released. The rest of the events and missions (of which admittedly there haven't been many) have all been Captains only...

Actually I am sooooo hoping it's a port of STO's Duty Officer system. I think sending my own "Justice League" superhero sidekicks out into the world on their own crime-fighting missions would be ultra cool.

And they were in KotOR I & II before STO too, just saying . And yeah like jonsills said, even then they weren't a new idea.

Anyways depending on how cryptic roll on what sidekicks actually 'do' within that STO lifted officer system they coudl use reading some of these ideas, just not the debuff one.
