Just returning. Role question.

Hey there, I am thinking of returning after a lengthy break and was wondering if there is a specific role in need generally? I am currently specced into eldritch/black hole type things but might be interested in changing to unarmed to maybe tank???? would the change be worth-while? How is unarmed DPS if not?

thanks

It depends a good bit on the content you run, but much of CO is generally easy enough that any role can do, given that the build underneath is fine. The only role generally not welcome in more challenging, higher-end content is the Hybrid. This is partly cause Hybrid versions of slotted Support passive auras are weak and can be disruptive, and also cause Hybrids don't generally do anything well enough that couldn't just be better filled by a more specialized role in harder group content (the lack of specialization and more selfish focus does mean that Hybrids can be great for solo content, fwiw). So unless maybe you're playing a Hybrid in that context, you shouldn't feel the need to change roles from what you're currently playing (unless you just really want to).

As for Unarmed, its single-target dps can be very strong, assuming you're building around something like BCF (or even DU, since it gets a dmg bonus vs. knock-immune targets like bosses). Ofc, it's also a somewhat different playstyle to go from what I assume is a ranged build (eldritch caster stuff) to a melee one, but ultimately it's up to you.

You actually helped me design a hybrid character, and right now he's one of my most powerful toons. He's a semi-tank if there isn't one in the group, and his DPS is pretty solid. Hybrids need very specific mods and abilities it seems, but they can be very formidable.

I should note that I was referring mostly to Hybrid builds that use Support passives in the Hybrid role for harder group content, and to Hybrid-dps builds that function like a dps unit, but use a defensive passive and deal a lot less base dps than a similarly-made dps build (fine for casual content, not so much for content w/ dps checks). I don't really count dual-passive builds for this (even if they could use the Hybrid role), cause they can still specialize pretty well, if setup properly.
