Dual Wield DPS Build

renegade0renegade0 Posts: 119 Arc User
I'm trying to figure out a decent way to build one. But i'm mostly not sure which AOE to get.
Should I get Sword Cyclone instead? I got tired of trying to keep up the Bleed stacks with single blade. I also feel like I'm not doing much damage...but maybe it's just my gear (it's mostly legion right now. I mostly play my healer and just now got all the cosmic gear on her)

I went with the fire shield instead of the parry or other block because the reflect damage doesn't seem as good, only doing one reflect instead of constant damage like the fire shield or Ebon void (I might take this shield instead for the heal effect). The only "theme" limit is that it's a martial arts character. Using magic or even tech is fine as long as the power is decent. I can build the them around other powers.

Although DEX/Con/Rec is a good SS setup here for dps, STR/Dex/Con (still Dex-focused) could also work if you want a bit more knock resist (and possibly some more defense via Juggernaut). If you're keeping Dex PSS, then you'll want to max Expose Weakness, and prob also get 3/3 in Flanking for Brawler spec (Offensive Expertise is kinda weak, since AOs in general aren't that strong for dps builds). Also, the build atm doesn't seem to have a source for Shredded, which Blade Tempest (DB's combo) could easily provide (I'd prob trade Intensity or the lunge for it). If you have DB's Ult unlocked, then you may also want to trade SB's Ult for it, since DB's Ult can put up Overpower for the group.

EotS is a fine AoE (Blade Tempest can also work as an AoE cleave), though I am a bit concerned about your energy when spamming DW w/o Dragon's Rush. Energy could still be okay w/ decent enough gear, and if you're getting ally AoPM_AoAC consistently, but you may want to test it out a bit to make sure you're not having to use the energy builder often. You could trade EotS for Dragon Kick, though, and get both a nice pbAoE and a source for Rush (and an AoE stun), though you'd lose the dmg shield option from EotS. Adding in an ally rez is also a bit weird, but I guess you can keep it if you know that you'll get some mileage from it. As for the block power, I don't think the extra effects matter too much here, since it's not a Tank build; most ranked blocks could be fine for your role.

Also, apparently you have a R3 TP device for this build? If so, then you can prob save out on ranking up your normal travel powers. Regardless, here's an example edit of it:

This is the build I use and it's -very- potent, replace tripwire with whatever you want and you can use smoke bomb instead of evasive manuevers /w adv. You'll be killing things so fast you dont really need a self res.

Thanks for the advice and the builds. i'll go over both and try them out.

I wanted a rez because I main healer and I guess i just can't help myself lol. But also, as a healer, when I'm downed for a long time during cosmics and not being rezzed by anyone while my self rez is recharging, it's really frustrating. The other healers are likely trying to keep everyone else alive, especially the tanks. So rezzing others at least helps i feel.

Given that I main healer, I don't care at all about my score, so in my mind, keeping everyone alive = more damage than i can do on my own which means taking down the mobs faster. I wish a hybrid type character was a bit more viable because i'd probably do that. but it honestly just feels like it's terrible at both rather than being good enough at both.

Yea, you can still keep the ally rez just fine. I'd say that it's a more uncommon pick for a dps build, but as long as you get some use out of it (and have your main dps needs covered in the rest of the build) then it's okay to keep it.

(also, Rhymere's build can work, though I prob wouldn't take R1 Masterful Dodge, since you'd already have Resurgence (they would now share a cd), and you can also prob skip on ranking the travel powers w/ a device. By taking Brawler's Setup, I also assume that his build alternates between Blade Tempest and DW for single-target dps, instead of mostly just focusing on DW use.)

Yeah, I find myself using the rez mainly during event bosses and cosmics. In alerts people just recovery right away, but they do that on my healer main as well if they happen to die, which rarely happens.

Here's what I went with and I like it waaay better than single blade. I took your advice going with Str Dex and Con as well. My character has way better energy management too. I was almost ready to give up on melee DPS and rename my character to make it a ranged DPS, lol.

I'll probably take out Trip Wire as it doesn't really do much as far as healing. I have no idea what else I could take honestly. I was thinking about taking Gust because it looks cool, lol. This is a bit off topic, but is this the power used by the Sentai hero in the lockbox or is it something else? If there's a more useful power though, I'll probably take that instead. Maybe Intensity? But it honestly doesn't seem to boost my damage much, unless the training dummies aren't a good test for it.

Looking at the other build, maybe Imbue would work out better.
I'm also not completely married to the Ebon Void shield, I wish the training area had better tests for defense so I can test all the blocks properly.

I don't have the device on this character just yet, it's a left over from when I was working on another character build.

I'm not sure what power you are referring too, but Gust's windup anim is shared w/ Open Palm Strike's (neither power I would consider a great fit for this build mechanically, though- you'd mostly just be taking it for the looks). Active Offenses in general aren't going to do much for dps builds, due to heavy DRs on damage bonuses, though Imbue can be good bit better than the others (provided you pop it at a health deficit). You could also consider a threat wipe for that slot, if you think you could get some use from it.

Also, for Str PSS, I would prob max Brutality (can take a point from Juggernaut for it). Physical Peak can also be good, though I suppose if you're not having energy issues atm then you can skip that. It also seems like you took Darkness' lunge (Void Shift) instead of Ebon Void here, but regardless any ranked block (save for Fluidity) can work here. Pick whichever block you like according to theme/look or the added minor effects (you don't necc need to test them out much, since most of them are outlined pretty well in their tooltips).

Yeah, I was thinking about getting a threat wipe.

Is there a viable unarmed build that uses Open Palm Strike?
That power looks so cool x_x

But then again, I hate knock back and taking the adv just to make it a pull seems like a waste. I'll just stick with dual blades lol
  • flowcytoflowcyto Posts: 12,859 Arc User
Yea, the knock-in adv is okay on Open Palm Strike, though it's still a very narrow AoE effect. If I were to ever use OPS in a build, I may get it to R3 and just use it as main attack versus bosses. It's not as strong as BCF or DU for Unarmed single-target, but it's not that bad for it either, considering that it can still get a knock-immune dmg bonus. Maybe something like this:

The last few powers can be w/e ya want.

For bosses, it uses Elbow Slam to initially put up Demolish, Backhand Chop to quickly put up/refresh Chi Flame and refresh Demolish, while charged OPS is the main attack, and charged DK can grant Rush for extra energy. Your main AoE attack (and main attack for trash in general) can be charged DK (which can also be boosted by Demolish from Elbow Slam on tougher targets). Gears mostly for Dex, w/ some Con.

Awesome, thanks! I really appreciate it. I might end up making two characters to use both builds, lol. And I guess with the blank slots I could get an ultimate and maybe imbue.

I'll probably be back asking for a tank build one with which ever one I end up not using lol
