Robot’s Motive

Hey there!

I like the Bureau 17 lore on robots and want to create a Bureau 17 robot to play. Reading the description about them on the 5th edition Monster Island book, there doesn’t seem to be an affiliation with UNTIL or a robot that works by itself with/ without an owner. Is there a motive that a robot could become affiliated with UNTIL or work alone? Thanks!

Well, the thing is, the robots used by Japan's Bureau 17 to help defend Monster Island aren't artificially intelligent. They're essentially sophisticated drones, used as expendable firepower and sometimes for heavy labor. So the first step would be to give one of them consciousness and free will.

There are a couple of routes I can think of to get there. The Japanese scientist hero Shonen no Kufu ("Gadget Boy," although he'd be well past "boy" age by now) spends a lot of time on Monster Island, helping Bureau 17 protect it, control the giant monsters, and study Qularr tech. Gadget Boy is one of the world leaders in artificial intelligence, having built a powerful robot called Gokin to be his assistant and bodyguard. GB frequently tinkers with upgrades to Gokin, and might have thought to try out some on a B17 robot before installing them in Gokin.

Another route would be the presence of VIPER and ARGENT on MI. They've occasionally captured one of the robots and reprogrammed it to serve them. An accident in reprogramming might have resulted in the robot gaining true intelligence. Perhaps it took the combination of those two events to finally make it free-willed.

As to motivation for it to leave Monster Island and work on its own, simple curiosity about the wider world could suffice, now that it has curiosity. Another possibility might be resentment toward Bureau 17, remembering how it was treated as a disposable slave. If it had been captured by a criminal agency, a raid by UNTIL may have inadvertently "liberated" it, making it feel gratitude to the agency and wanting to help them. Or of course, any combination of the above. ;)
