I'm surprised this got a category. But yeah, blame baby/children's TV shows to introduce me to anthropomorphized animal people.

Missing option: Your hometown hosts their annual convention because it’s the first city to not — ahem — respectfully decline their request to book the convention center the following year. (The adjacent hotel was like “We don’t like to make special rules for our guests, but it looks like we have to make special rules for our guests that week.”)
Choose your enemies carefully, because they will define you / Make them interesting, because in some ways they will mind you
They're not there in the beginning, but when your story ends / Gonna last with you longer than your friends

I mainly found out about furries in DeviantART then FurAffinity. But since there's no "Others" options I'd have to go with the 2nd best. 90s cartoons with buff anthro really raised a lot of feelings when I was kid. :9

I found out about them in a TV show called CSI, it was also how I found out about a thing called yiffing, not sure how people found out about furries though cartoons or barny as furries are a fan group of anthropomorphic animals. You don't find out about trekies though watching Star Trek, you might become one, but Star Trek doesn't talk about it's fans.
  • yes, a LOT of people found out through that CSI episode, and most of the negative attention the community gets nowadays can likely be traced back to that episode because of how much of a negative night it cast...even if it was basically true, i'll admit, but it doesn't represent the entire culture

Lucifer did their furry episode way better...except the water squirting thing the dolphin did - that really wasn't necessary

That CSI Episode is what you get when you let Normy writers who try to be HIP and write stuff they don't even understand what is even about. Plus with the early 2000s weirdess while the internet was still not so mainstream

That and the Videogame Episode where they had to unlock the code the murderer left behind or something, in a videogame which looked like Assassin Creed and they had to go through the "Next Level". Propably to save the princess from another castle

Simply, Looking at Fanart of said shows (Hi DeviantART) then discovering there is a whole art subculture community-fandom and artists who specialize and dedicated on creating anthro characters and media
Not only from cartoons but also videogames (Nintendo and Disney are the Mothers of all Furries)

and if you an artist yourself and realize that Anthro characters and fantasy species are more fun to draw than humans

and exactly can happen with the Star Trek and Trekkies, Chances are you will look for Fanart and interact with the fandom and become part of it!

  • yeah, except...they HAD several actual furries as consultants when they made that episode...and completely ignored everything they consulted on and went with their original script anyway

so it isn't they didn't understand what they were writing - they FULLY understood what they were writing and deliberately chose to portray a subculture in a negative light

as for disney and nintendo being the mothers of all furries? yeah...not even close - humans have been dressing up as animals since before recorded history

You really should have put Videogames in general instead of Pokemon
Hell, you are having a FIELD Day in videogames consider the amount of anthro animal mascots platformers and more in both Playstation 1 & 2 and Nintendo Consoles
and the oldest consoles before that, where EVERYONE was trying to copy the masco-success of Sonic the Hedgehog and creating their own mascots (most of them failed into obscurity)

Banjo Kazooie, Sonic the Hedgehog, Jak and Daxter, Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Gex the gecko, Breath of Fire, Starfox, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong and manym many more

    Needs other game/other source/etc options.

I first learned about "those things" from an old MMO I used to play. Someone I was friends with in that game was like, "hey, you should join me on Furcadia." "What's that?" "It's a sort of chat room world for furries." "For what?" When I looked at it, I grew rather uneasy and just kind of...never followed up on it. It was then that I became aware that a disturbing number of people were really into this "furry" thing--and usually in a rather "adult" way. I didn't get it then and I still don't get it today, but if that's what people like, rock on I guess?
(Hopefully) Useful CO Resources: HeroCreator (character planner), Cosmic Timers/Alert Checklist, Blood Moon Map, Anniversary Cat Map, and more (eventually, anyway).
