Medical Technology Lore

Hey there!

So my character is a combat medic and has a past medical history of cardiac arrest due to exposure of radiation of Qulaar tech. He has received an ICD (implantable cardio defibrillator) that shocks his heart when it goes into emergent arrhythmia. Is there lore on something that could cure this or something that can relate to fix this? Thanks!

Well, as mentioned on the Supertech on Champions Earth thread, advances in medicine and genetics have eliminated, or diminished the impact of, many diseases. Scientists have adapted cybernetic technology first developed for powered armor and similar super-technology to devices that allow people with spinal injuries to walk again, and people with neurological disorders to function without significant impairment.

Several official characters, particularly villains, have been saved from the brink of death by radical bionic augmentation, including Halfjack, Interface, and Ripper. I'd say the resources to repair your character one way or another are out there. Whether he has the finances or connections to access those resources, is up to you to decide. ;)

He might have allergies to the materials used for repairs, as well, or possibly even ethical objections (see Gil Hamilton in Larry Niven's "Gil the ARM" stories - he could have gotten a cybernetic replacement arm that would have looked just like his old meat arm, but he was squeamish about being "part metal". In "ARM", another character made the counter-argument, that his artificial arm was his and didn't belong to some dead man).
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"

The VIPER supervillain Occulon gained his powerful eyebeams when the eyes from the corpse of a crashed alien Hzeel scout were implanted into his sockets by Dr. Moreau when he was working for VIPER. Hzeel don't have eyebeams themselves -- they're the result of interaction between their biology and human's. That raises interesting possibilities as to what super-powers a human might gain from other Hzeel tissue implants or grafts. Dr. Moreau, VIPER, or the Warlord (who has adapted salvaged Hzeel tech) might still have a preserved Hzeel heart lying around, and be interested in testing those possibilities on a captured human who already has unusual heart properties.
