Character using PFF - has it ever been fixed?

slowecsl4pweslowecsl4pwe Posts: 221 Arc User
A while ago, I got some build advice on this character that runs in Hybrid so it can utilize PFF and actually do some damage. I took it out against and it is prone to major spike damage. I know there was an issue surrounding PFF and how it absorbed and mitigated damage in the past. Has this ever been reworked, because I like her concept overall. She has Heroic Gear and level 6 mods so her PFF runs around 7000, I think. Thanks

You have to build around PFF a bit, though it can be workable depending on the level of content you are doing. It can be okay for hybrid dps in groups where others are tanking, since it can absorb occasional AoE dmg and regenerate in between (though you still want to block on top of it when you can). An example build using some Gadgeteering:

It's possible to do most content using PFF, but it's also possible to do most content without a passive. The fundamental issue with PFF is that the rate at which the field regenerates is extremely low and cannot be boosted by external healing, so it basically amounts to not having a passive in any extended fight.

Why do you want PFF? There may be other power choices that achieve what you want from your character without being saddled with the limitations of PFF.

pantagruel01, you are right. I have around 50 charachters and try to mix it up a bit when I can. Does the same go with the Regeneration in the Infernal framework?

No, regeneration ramps up to somewhere around 1500 hp/3s; it's not a preferred power for main tanking cosmics (though plenty for most event cosmics) but it's good in almost all other content. Moonstruck (requires a Blood Moon perk to unlock) helps its performance but shouldn't be thought of as mandatory.

I guess the same goes with a tanking Power Armor build as well. Of course, like the other build this goes back a ways …

I would like to keep her PFF if possible, and advice? Thanks

Well, you've heard some of the caveats from Panta- as long as you are aware of the limits of PFF, then go ahead I guess:

I'd prob still take Con SS for PFF builds that wanted to tank. Resilient is pretty nice for the extra knock resist anyways.

(You could always take a diff defensive passive if you aren't satisfied w/ PFF's performance, though in that case you may want to train it and Field Surge last to make retraining them cheaper.)

The basic problem with PFF is that its effective combat healing rate is about 800 hp/3s on a full health shield, declining to half that as the shield takes damage, the shield can't be replenished by other sources of healing except Field Surge (which has a 90s cd), and essentially all opposition that averages less than 800 hp/3s can be beaten without a defensive passive.
  • flowcytoflowcyto Posts: 12,859 Arc User
Yea, well there are other ways of helping PFF, but its generally just easier to take a diff passive at that point. OP is free to try it out and see if they still like PFF for the content they want to do, but I won't blame them for changing it out later.

Thanks for the update. What would be the best deff passive to take for this Power Armor build since it is ranged? Invulnerability, Regeneration? I don't really know my tanking defensive passive options well.

Defiance is fine overall for the large dmgRes boost, and is nice for the extra energy- which could be relevant if you're trying to do 3-slot PA (and you save 4 adv points from not needing to rank it). Else, Invuln and Regen are solid picks for most content, w/ Regen making self-healing more automated, and Invuln being better vs smaller and medium sized hits than Defiance. I prob wouldn't take LR w/o dodge-related powers like TKicks, and those are generally better w/ melee builds.

    Personal Force Field Fixed?
    *Stifled laughter*
Only the devs can help it now.
Want to get to know me a bit better, Click me and take a read of My Dragon Profile Page, it's a bit dated but still relevant.

I take this quote from a review that I agree with.

"customisation is so linear; everyone is after the optimal dps:survivability ratio with 0 reliance on other players = autonomous gameplay... Players don't need each other anymore... which in my opinion is a bad thing."

Unfortunately, the mechanics of power armor toggles (they get shut off by blocking, and cannot restart until a short time after you finish blocking) make power armor tanking dubious in any high end content (it's fine if you don't need to block much).

I mainly use it for Alerts and such, and with the new build running Defiance it has performed quite well. Cosmics would be another story all together I fear. Thanks
