Looking for suggestions for Viking/Norse god HW DPS with a bit of Cold/Ice

I'm updating an old melee DPS character. I really like the concept, but my build sucked, so I'd like to start from scratch.

The concept is a Viking-like Norse god who's primarily a heavy weapons fighter. Rather than the usual relationship between heavy weapons and fire, I wanted to do the opposite and give him some ice-related powers (mostly just for flavor, because I can't find any synergy between Heavy Weapons and Ice powers). So, for example, I gave him what looked like a giant axe made of ice, I used Ice Slide as his travel power, and I had an Arctic Beast hang out and fight with him.

Any suggestions?

Core skeleton is a typical HW build (cleave, no quarter, annihilate), while everything framing it is ice-themed. You're going to get most of your energy by using ice effects, frost breath will do your energy bar wonders. Above all, Chill is just inherently good for melee builds, and especially HW, because it's a mostly irresistible movement-speed slow, so suddenly all those mobs that love sashaying backwards to shoot you with guns are moving at probably about 10% of their normal speed. The level order is a bit wonky, I'm assuming this is a character who's level 40 and being respecced? Anyways, hope this fits what you want.

Personally I wouldn't use Arctic Beast since I hate pets, but given that the build's purpose is to passively get chill on enemies while mainly focusing on hitting people with a huge ice axe, it might just be one of the better candidates for the build.
    • If you want to make use of all the Clinging Flames stacks you're building by cleaving people consider taking Absorb Heat and then pairing it with its chill advantage, as that'll quickly grant you both some good healing and lots of energy.
    • Ice Burst is an attractive choice for crowd control and also building Enrage, but now that I'm thinking about it I'm not sure if it's a good chill applicator.
    • Going tank would open up the possibility of using other attacks in this build such as Avalanche since you wouldn't have to worry as much about sticking to one damage type. Still would be suboptimal due to toggle choice, but the damage gap wouldn't be as glaring as the difference between an Unstoppable-Boosted Cleave and an Non-Ice-Form-Boosted Avalanche in melee role.

Thanks, bluhman! I did some testing and it turns out the Chill effect caused by Arctic Beast does not count as me applying a Chill effect for purposes of Icy Embrace. So I swapped Absorb Heat for Arctic Beast and am now getting tons of Energy.

I wonder if I'd have the same problem with the Agate (Winter Wolf) Sidekick. I'm thinking probably yes.

My Energy Equilibrium is really low, so I do have to start every fight building up Energy via Bludgeon (otherwise I don't have enough energy to use Frost Breath), but once I've primed the pump it looks like I should enjoy a steady flow of Energy.

There will be more powers in my rotation than I'm used to, so I'll have to practice with it.

    Thanks again! :)

Yea, typically stuff from normal pets wont proc EUs for you, since you have to be the source for that. Permanent pets will also give you an energy penalty when they're up, so energy management should be a bit easier w/o them.

Avalanche and Ice Burst can knock for an Enrage build, though Avalanche is a bit costly, and Ice Burst can scatter mobs.

Your energy equilibrium will appear lower if you have End SS'd, since End increases your max energy. Fortunately, you have Unstoppable here, and it offers really good energy scaling w/ Rec on knocks. For Bluhman's build you want to gear mostly for Str, but you should talent for some Rec too (or swap End SS for Rec SS and talent for some End), and that Rec should also help w/ equilibrium a bit. Ideally you shouldn't really need to use the energy builder by the time you hit max level.

Just FYI concept-wise, all the mythic pantheons have real existence in the Champions Universe, with their realms in the dimension of Faerie, aka the Land of Legends. They were gone from Earth for centuries, but since around eighty years ago, conditions have led to them visiting Earth again. However, over the intervening centuries those legendary figures may have had offspring not recorded in any myth. That includes between members of different pantheons; as humanity as a whole has become more aware of mythic and religious traditions from other cultures, that change in consciousness is reflected in the gods from those cultures "fraternizing" to a greater degree.

For example, one official Champions hero, the demigod Chrysaor, is the child of the Greek goddess Aphrodite by a warrior angel from the Abrahamic religions, whom Aphrodite seduced, mainly to prove she could. ;)
