Boring pre-amble / context:After reinstalling on a whim, making an entertainingly daft costume for an archetype that I don't own and then balking at spending £40 for the zen to make it, I was prepared to continue ignoring the game (last login was over 2400 days ago).
I couldn't believe it when I saw freeform slots going on sale (coinciding with a zen sale), which has caught my attention once again. Silver accounts having access to subscription perks? Dogs & cats living together, mass hysteria!
As a Silver mug who happened to spend a lot on microtransactions back in the day, Freeform was always one of those forbidden fruits from being a subbie, so I'm a bit out of my depth from a combination of almost 7-years-worth of hotfixes and releases and potentially being able to taste true creative freedom with No Strings Attached.
Point of the post:
As a test bed to try and wrap my head around potentially having unlimited power-based freedom in a game that I've not played in nearly 7 years, I've
tried to create a ranged caster that can stick around in combat and win through toxic attrition. It may or may not be loosely inspired by the disgusting resilience of Warhammer Nurgle sorcerers, and the fact that the utility and flexibility of ranged still seems to trump the 'fun' of melee. Boooooo.
The specialisation trees LOOK okay: full of +% interactions between offence and defence, but I can't tell if the power progression is where it needs to be in order to actually have fun within PvE or not. Particularly adventure packs because I spent a lot of time replaying stuff like Aftershock and Demonflame. Some guidance maybe for an old fart-of-a-player?

Main idea is to use Wisp on cd for debuffing, and spam Epidemic for easy AoE grinding. For single targets, you can use Wisp on cd and alternate between Infernal Blast and Defile. Life Essence was thrown in if you need extra self-healing in combat (can also heal nearby allies). Last power slot can be w/e ya want. I'd also prob rank up one of your travel powers (w/e one you end up using more often). Gears mostly for Ego, w/ some Con (for maxHP) and End + Rec (for energy).
- Be safe and have fun, champs - for science!
Keen to possibly give it a go once the Zen sale catches up with the freeform slot sale!
But again, its up to you. Infernal is a pretty strong set all around to experiment with.
