Freeform Build 1st Attempt

Okay one of my favorite Superheros is shield using guy in stars and stripes. I am hoping to go gold or buy a freeform so I am looking for input on my 1st attempt at making him as a CO Freeform.

If you are using a dps passive, I wouldn't take Challenge advs if you aren't planning on tanking for groups of players (prob also wouldn't use Defense Combo if its not a tank, due to the unwanted added threat then). Con PS is also not ideal for non-tank builds. Dps passives generally don't give much (or any) extra defenses, but what you settle on does depend on what ur actual goals are for the build- in terms of role and content.

The build also needs a toggle/form, since you miss out on large dmg bonuses and energy gains w/o one. Unleashed Rage also scales w/ Enraged stacks, which you don't have here.

The build also has some redundant attacks, which would be nice to cut down on from a practical standpoint.

I could tweak the build, though before that I would like to know what attacks/powers you feel you must have for the theme, and what 'role' you want to play as primarily (tank, dps, hybrid, etc).

I am want a tank/pistol carrying Captain, I play a Behemoth right now I like it a lot, I use a Criswolf09's Juggernaut build with it. And it has been a lot of fun, because of my job I solo a lot so it has to have staying power.

Well, I guess you can play as a sturdy hybrid-dps, but then you'd want a diff passive most likely. Dps passives like Unstoppable are good for killing things, but aren't good for taking hits. A good compromise between survival and dps is using something like Invuln in the Hybrid role.

(Unnamed Build) - Freeform

Level 32: Haymaker (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 35: Energy Shield (Rank 2)
Level 38: Pistol Whip (advantages)
Adv. Points: 36/36

Travel Powers
Level 6: Acrobatics (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 35: Jet Pack (advantages)

Specializations
Strength: Swole (2/3)
Strength: Physical Peak (3/3)
Strength: Brutality (2/2)
Strength: Juggernaut (2/3)
Strength: Overpower (1/3)

Vindicator: Merciless (3/3)
Vindicator: The Rush of Battle (2/3)
Vindicator: Focused Strikes (2/3)
Vindicator: Mass Destruction (1/3)
Mastery: Strength Mastery (1/1)

I'm not a huge fan of AoE knockbacks like Roomsweeper, but Might's AoE options are pretty flawed overall atm. Can always build up knock immunity by using Burst Shot and/or Demolish, though. Haymaker is ur big boss hitter, while Demolish can boost ur melee dmg w/ its debuff. Also tried to remove some redundant powers so you have a better build backbone. Gears mostly for Str, w/ some Con and Int.

Thanks again flowcyto, BTW I did not realize it was you, everyone on Reddit told me to ask you for one - LoL but I did not want to be a pest.

I have been enjoying it a lot, I play as often as I can. I am free right now, and one more can you buy a Freeform slot, instead of going gold?

Oh, and I guess I should have taken more into account that you may be leveling. Really early on, you only have starter pistol powers for offense in that build- still workable, but you can also train in a starter combo in the 2nd power slot (like Beatdown) and re-train out of it later when you can unlock something like Enrage + Roomsweeper (power retrains in the PH are cheap at low levels). Up to you, though- low levels can fly by, but you may rather be punching things early on.

Well I like what I see with the one you posted, and it does not take long to level up.

About subbing: you have access to FF's as long as ur subbed/Gold, and get a new slot for one each time you get them maxed. You won't be able to play FFs once the sub runs out, though (you can still play the character if you switch them back to a free Archetype build). Permanent FF slots are gotten via buying them individually w/ Zen (kinda costly, but there are sales sometimes) or getting a lifetime sub (which you may not want to shell out for :x ). Hope that helped.

One more question, if I stayed Free Play are the free ATs playable all the way to end game?

Yea, (most) ATs are viable even upto end game- they just tend to be much more role-restricted than FFs and tend to need to rely more on good blocking, threat management, and using healing devices to survive (vs. an FF w/ a full array of defenses and self-heals that has more leeway).

Okay thanks, and I sorry if I am bugging you. My main is a Behemoth (like I said), and I am using Criswolf09's Juggernaut build http://champions-online.proboards.com/thread/3372/behemoth-archetype-guide-2 for my Captain Freedom.

I trying to learn more about this game, there is some help out there but a lot of it seems out of date or not complete. And I am not knocking anyone, or it could I am just missing stuff.

I have been trying find a good solo Free AT besides the Behemoth, none of them seem to have any staying power, survivability I mean.
So do you have any suggestions?

Well, the Unleashed is still a strong AT, though it won't get more sturdy till it gets stuff like Eye of the Storm, Force Shield, and BCR. A sample build for that:

(Unnamed Build) - The Unleashed
v2.4.2-29

Super Stats
Level 6: Dexterity (Primary)
Level 10: Recovery (Secondary)
Level 15: Strength (Secondary)

Talents
Level 1: The Unleashed (Str: 10, Dex: 10, Int: 8, Rec: 10)
Level 7: Impresario (Dex: 5, Rec: 5)
Level 12: Martial Focus (Str: 5, Dex: 5)
Level 15: Relentless (Str: 5, Rec: 5)
Level 20: Quick Recovery (Con: 5, Rec: 5)
Level 25: Acrobat (Dex: 5, Con: 5)
Level 30: Physical Conditioning (Str: 5, Con: 5)

Powers
Level 1: Rain of Steel (advantages)
Level 1: Blade Tempest (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 6: Form of the Tempest (advantages)
Level 8: Way of the Warrior (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 11: Force Snap (Recharge)
Level 14: Eye of the Storm (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 17: Bountiful Chi Resurgence (Rank 2, Resurgent Reiki)
Level 21: Dragon's Wrath (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 25: Force Shield (Rank 2, Rank 3, Force Sheathe)
Level 30: Relentless
Level 35: Field Surge (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 40: Force Geyser (Nailed to the Ground)
Adv. Points: 33/36

Travel Powers
Level 6:
Level 35:

Specializations
Dexterity: Combat Training (2/3)
Dexterity: Gear Utilization (3/3)
Dexterity: Deadly Aim (3/3)
Dexterity: Expose Weakness (2/2)

Vindicator: Merciless (3/3)
Vindicator: Focused Strikes (3/3)
Vindicator: Mass Destruction (2/3)
Mastery: Dexterity Mastery (1/1)

Made it more defense-focused (Force Collapse w/self-heal adv instead of a lunge, Field Surge instead of Intensity, Elusive instead of Upper Hand in Warden). Blade Tempest is rel cheap cleave AoE and for putting up Shredded. EotS is the main pbAoE; its dps ramps down while its dmg shield ramps up, so fully maintain it if playing defensive and cancel/recast the maintain roughly halfway if using it for dps. DWrath is the main single-target dps attack (fully charge it to get Rush's energy).

Gears mostly for Dex (w/ some Str and Rec). Also, get some Growth/maxHP mods on Defensive gear to boost ur health a bit, and get some cost discount on Utility gear (since it lacks cost discount specs and Int).

Wow The Unleashed!!, I have tried it I seem to die real quick. I thought it would be the Glacier I have not tried one of them since I got a Tank all ready. So make it to level 14, and it gets better, well it would be different from my Tank, okay I will give it a try when I get home.

Thanks again, hope I have not been a pest.

Yea, it'll be squishy till it gets certain powers, but EotS is quite good for defense. Its still a dps AT, but compared to other ones its not as potentially squishy and still has good dps potential.

Glacier is fine too, though its not great at dps (Avalanche is good, though its not there till max level), and doesn't have many venues for self-healing:

(Unnamed Build) - The Glacier
v2.4.2-29

Super Stats
Level 6: Constitution (Primary)
Level 10: Endurance (Secondary)
Level 15: Ego (Secondary)

Talents
Level 1: The Glacier (Dex: 8, Con: 10, Int: 10, End: 10)
Level 7: Ascetic (Con: 5, Ego: 5)
Level 12: Boundless Reserves (Con: 5, End: 5)
Level 15: Daredevil (Ego: 5, End: 5)
Level 20: Quick Recovery (Con: 5, Rec: 5)
Level 25: Worldly (Ego: 5, Rec: 5)
Level 30: Amazing Stamina (Rec: 5, End: 5)

Powers
Level 1: Ice Shards (advantages)
Level 1: Ice Blast (Rank 2, Hard Frost)
Level 6: Ice Cage (Sub-Zero Cellblock)
Level 8: Invulnerability (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 11: Frost Breath (Rank 2, Frost Bite)
Level 14: Concentration (advantages)
Level 17: Ice Sheath (Rank 2)
Level 21: Ice Shield (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 25: Icy Embrace
Level 30: Unbreakable (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 35: Ice Barrier (Rank 2, Rank 3, Frigid Freedom)
Level 40: Avalanche (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Adv. Points: 33/36

Travel Powers
Level 6:
Level 35:

Specializations
Constitution: Unyielding (1/2)
Constitution: Fuel My Fire (3/3)
Constitution: Resilient (2/2)
Constitution: Adrenaline Rush (2/2)
Constitution: Armored (2/2)
Guardian: Fortified Gear (3/3)

Protector: Bulwark (2/2)
Protector: Defensive Expertise (3/3)
Protector: Resolute (2/3)

Would gear mostly for Con and Ego. You'd want some Challenge advs if you planned on tanking for allies.

Glacier is fine too, though its not great at dps (Avalanche is good, though its not there till max level), and doesn't have many venues for self-healing:

(Unnamed Build) - The Glacier
v2.4.2-29

Super Stats
Level 6: Constitution (Primary)
Level 10: Endurance (Secondary)
Level 15: Ego (Secondary)

Level 7: Ascetic (Con: 5, Ego: 5)
Level 12: Boundless Reserves (Con: 5, End: 5)
Level 15: Daredevil (Ego: 5, End: 5)
Level 20: Quick Recovery (Con: 5, Rec: 5)
Level 25: Worldly (Ego: 5, Rec: 5)
Level 30: Amazing Stamina (Rec: 5, End: 5)

Powers
Level 1: Ice Shards (advantages)
Level 1: Ice Blast (Rank 2, Hard Frost)
Level 6: Ice Cage (Sub-Zero Cellblock)
Level 8: Invulnerability (Rank 2, Rank 3)

Constitution: Unyielding (1/2)
Constitution: Fuel My Fire (3/3)
Constitution: Resilient (2/2)
Constitution: Adrenaline Rush (2/2)
Constitution: Armored (2/2)
Guardian: Fortified Gear (3/3)
Guardian: Ruthless (2/2)
Guardian: Find the Mark (2/3)
Guardian: The Best Defense (3/3)

Protector: Bulwark (2/2)
Protector: Defensive Expertise (3/3)
Protector: Resolute (2/3)

Would gear mostly for Con and Ego. You'd want some Challenge advs if you planned on tanking for allies.

Well thanks again, will try the Unleashed first, see if my almost 58yr old reflexes can handle it --- LOL =)

Well, I guess you can play as a sturdy hybrid-dps, but then you'd want a diff passive most likely. Dps passives like Unstoppable are good for killing things, but aren't good for taking hits. A good compromise between survival and dps is using something like Invuln in the Hybrid role.

Well flowcyto, I tried the the Unleashed, I am just to slow on the keyboard anymore. It was not what I was looking for I am using a Soldier AT and using this build http://aesica.net/co/herocreator.htm?v=29&n=Gun Toting Vigilante 2&d=85270KXLaIKW0630M381008A0m85059903A8008K09JC018R098E008O038J048T0300000000045i2MGB0GF0

It has been a lot of fun, the build if not mine, I got from Criswolf09's posting on NPW Forums.

Yea, the Soldier is good (it was good even before its revamp). Its squishy as all get out, but it does have range and CC power to make up for that, and the potential dmg shield adv on SMG (like a ranged EotS). I'd prob get the Furious refreshing adv on Gatling, though, if you're using the Uncomp adv on AR and building to 3x Furious w/ SMG first. I'd also get 6th Sense instead of Aggression n Ego PSS.

flowcyto, you lost me on the last part "I'd also get 6th Sense instead of Aggression n Ego PSS", I figured out the rest and will make the changes

So more like this, and the travel skills have been updated to my toon, Streethawk - an Angel with guns. http://aesica.net/co/herocreator.htm?v=29&n=Gun Toting Vigilante Mk 3&d=85270KXLaIKW01304381008A0m85059903A8008K05JC018R098E008O038J048T03000000000ckr2MGB0GF0

Yea, though the choice between Gatling and Shotgun is mostly down to having the option for extra range vs. more potential CC- as Shotgun's adv can also allow it to refresh Furious and apply Armor Piercing (though Frag Nade can also apply AP and I wouldn't have redundant advs), but is locked a 50ft max (AR and Gatling can go to 100ft). I'd also prob move R2 of Holdout Shot to R3 Retaliation.

So it does kinda depend if you plan on dpsing w/ AR from very long range usually, and if so then you prob also want Gatling. If instead you will stay w/in 50ft w/ AR (or weaving in and out of 50ft), then Shotgun is fine for the Furious refresh + AP, while you can take Frag Nade to R3 or R2 + Open Wound to get more dmg from it (its pretty much just a dps-boosting DoT then, which is alright). Building up Furious w/ SMG will still take being w/in 50ft, regardless (as will using any grenade).

Also, in the future I'd recommend editing your posts if you have a small, timely update to give (instead of putting it in a new reply).

Well, my Hero is a flyer so I am hoping to be at long range most of the time. And I apologize about the post, I am at work and just posted something real quick when I realize what you meant.

And once again thanks for all your help, I am starting to learn this (a little) with these postings.
