Crash at Cryptic Screen

Hi all! So I'm in a bit of a pickle.

I've been playing CO for many years on a variety of laptops, and for some reason my current laptop will not run CO. I'm using a 64-bit HP laptop with an Intel Core i5-2520M CPU and have 8GB of RAM installed.

I've installed CO through steam, like I normally do, and as soon as I press play and I'm taken to the "CRYPTIC" black loading screen, the game immediately crashes and the Cryptic Error prompt pops up. I've tried everything, and I'm unsure of what to do. I've tried running it through ARC, running the launcher on safe mode, even turning off Window's Firewall in case that was what was causing the crash. I've updated all of my drivers, and even checked online that this laptop would be able to handle CO, and I've seen that CO is listed as a compatible game. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!

On the list of things you have tried, I don't see a Force Verify check. Perhaps that might help? You can access it from the Launcher under Options. Just hit the checkbox and click Save and the launcher will try to make sure all files are intact. Oh, and while you're at it, it might be a good idea to make sure On-Demand Patching is unmarked.

Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately, both of those options did not help the problem; I'm still getting a CTD after the CRYPTIC screen. The verification screen doesn't seem to be able to find anything to fix, either. I've also tried resetting the gameprefs.pref file, but that also doesn't seem to work.

Is there anything else I could potentially try?

The only other thing I can really think of is to run the game in compatibility mode by right clicking the shortcut and going into its Properties. I'll be assuming you're on Windows 10, so I would try Compatibility for Windows 7 first, and then going down to Windows XP Service Pack 2.

By default, you should be Running as Admin, so make sure that box is also checked while you're there. Aside from that, well... I'm not sure. I would definitely send in a proper ticket on the Arc site to see what they say.
