Why are her eyes so big? It's completely distracting and makes little sense, especially considering the rest of the droids, let alone human characters, have normal eyes. Rosa Salazar's eyes would have been just fine normal. Not grossly exaggerated.
The big eyes are a bit off putting yeah but remember Alita is an android and this uncanny valley sort of effect actually helps sell this.
This argument falls flat when the other droids in the commercial are shown to have normal eyes, and none of the other characters even display such uncanny valley looks. If this was to aspire to the comic/Manga, then they should have gone all in, not half assed it just for one character.
Then the story would be like another I, Robot.... And haven't you heard, sexbots are comin' really soon to stores near you.
And don't think there was any sexbots in Battle Angel Alita.
Fighting robots with boobs are dumb for the same reason female armor with boobs is dumb u3u also making the thing a girl is just a cheap trick to make people be like "yeah girl power!" when in fact there's no girl involved ( and also to make it "compelling" to male viewers... wink wink ). If it's gonna be a sexbot, then it should be a porn o3o
Battle Angel is about an Android having lost her memories and trying to discover who she is and her purpose in a post-apocalyptic world, and the relationships she forges with people she meets in her journey of finding out that purpose.
It has nothing to do with sexbots.
James Cameron mentioned that he wanted to make a film adaption of the manga that he's also a fan of for like almost two decades already. Interesting to see that things are finally moving forward.

It's not at all unusual for humans to want to create machines in their own image. In doing so, they have to choose either male or female for its appearance. Why does "robot with female characteristics" specifically make it a sexbot? Is a robot meant to resemble a male also considered a sexbot?
(Hopefully) Useful CO Resources: HeroCreator (character planner), Cosmic Timers/Alert Checklist, Blood Moon Map, Anniversary Cat Map, and more (eventually, anyway).
A mechanical being with the capability for sex isn't necessarily a sexbot. Even though he's "fully functional and anatomically correct," Data doesn't count as a sexbot since that's not his primary function. On the other hand, Harmony (I can't link to it for obvious reasons) is a sexbot--a robot created for the sole purpose of...you know.
And before you ask, "Why give a robot sex parts if it's not meant to be a sexbot?"
If you're trying to emulate a human being as closely as possible, why would you leave that out?
(Hopefully) Useful CO Resources: HeroCreator (character planner), Cosmic Timers/Alert Checklist, Blood Moon Map, Anniversary Cat Map, and more (eventually, anyway).
Fembots from Austin Powers are sexbots. Gigolo Joe from Spielberg's A.I. is a sexbot. Nexus 6 pleasure model replicants from Blade Runner are sexbots. Their primary functions are to have sexual intercouse in whatever setting or plot involved in the movies their from.
This doesn't apply to the character of Alita because her seeking sexual relationships with people isn't central to the character. Heck it's pretty non-existent. It goes deeper than that. Calling her a "sexbot" is just nothing short of ignorant.
Not all android are created equal though, because they are androids.
No, but if you are going to go out of your way for one character, again, you should do it for all characters. Starting to remind me of AI again. And Alita is not the only character in the Manga with saucer eyes, so yea, that really just does nto fly.
Been a while since I read the manga so I could be wrong, but I think Alita originally was a human being that was converted into a cyborg/android. I remember her having flashbacks with another character about when she was a young child. Also, she was a spy before the doctor guy found her all smashed up, so blending in with humans had to be at the top of her design, and so that's why the female body.
And when your artificial intelligence, which again was designed to emulate humanity in every possible way, asks you, "creator, I met someone that I deeply care for. If I am to emulate humanity as closely as possible, why did you make me incomplete? So that I cannot share myself with this person in the way that humans do?"
I dunno, that anime face looks like fetish fuel to me. She's not just a sexbot, she's a custom order.
I'm not sure if you're trolling or if you really think that, but I really don't see it. The Alitabot shown in that trailer didn't appear sexualized at all. No skimpy outfits, no "I was created to please men," or any of that nonsense. It's just an android designed to look mostly (but not quite) human, and I suspect the big eyes were created to help convey that feeling of "almost human, but not quite." And they do that quite well.

sexuality != perversion
I would open that robot up and repair it so it doesn't malfunction in that fashion again o3o

Those eyes make it look like a creature, and they are ridiculous in the context of the movie. It's obvious that she was made to be an anime waifu. Hell she's practically a blue print for an anime fan's waifu sex bot lol

That's certainly your personal observation, but it's not what the film's narrative is about.
Yeah and you keep insisting that the whole point of the character is to be an "anime waifu" sexbot while ignoring said narrative that isn't focused on that at all.
What can we say, Spinny's really turned on by a woman with big, round, firm... eyes.

Well, I don't know what else to tell you, then. You're entitled to your opinions no matter how far out in left field they are. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Would you rather they took it in the other direction by giving her tiny eyes?
(Hopefully) Useful CO Resources: HeroCreator (character planner), Cosmic Timers/Alert Checklist, Blood Moon Map, Anniversary Cat Map, and more (eventually, anyway).
Personally I would just give them something similar to Mechanon's face - just a camera thing poking out from a featureless metal/plastic head. Why do they need a nose? They're not smelling anything. Why do they need a mouth? Their speech comes out of a speaker. Robots don't have a gender identity that they need to express, their gender is toaster.
Now that there's a robut. Lose some of the decoration though. And cover up those hoses.
Then the whole conversation was dumb, the people saying robots have a right to a gender don't even know anything about the movie, and it's championshewolf's fault for calling them droids o3o
Also if she's a cyborg why are her eyes so big? Oh wait I already know the answer... to make her a 3d anime waifu ^_^
> @spinnytop said: >Yeah, around the time people were arguing that the robot needs to look like a girl so it can find love... when it was never a robot to begin with.

Yeah I wonder what dumb comment set that off.
I do believe the beginning of the end came when someone decided that eyes were a feminine secondary sexual characteristic, and he's really turned on by big round ones (where most of us just see that face as a disturbing dive right into the Uncanny Valley).

Which I will again remind you, the response to this would be to push the off button and then hook it up to the diagnostic machine o3o

Why just one camera? Why not two for binocular, 3d vision? Why would a robot need a nose? Do you honestly think there's no advantages to being able to detect the current makeup of nearby air particles? Why would they need a mouth? How about as a place for the aforementioned speaker?
As for gender identity, the robots of today obviously don't. However, as AI gets closer and closer to rivaling our own, wouldn't an AI designed to be similar to human intelligence not be self aware? How do you know it wouldn't want to express itself somehow? When you think about it, humans are really just robots made out of meat instead of metal.
Which I will again remind you, the response to this would be to push the off button and then hook it up to the diagnostic machine o3o
The state has decided that you aren't acting the way you're supposed to, so it wants to perform alterations on your brain to make you behave more in line with expected guidelines. Do you let this happen because the state knows what's best for you?
The closer we get to creating AI which rivals our own intelligence, the grayer the "turn it off and make changes" solution gets.

Also this would be more compelling to me if the droids were sexless cause sexbots always strike me as silly.

That's certainly your personal observation, but it's not what the film's narrative is about.
