DPS+Survivable Fire/Earth+Arcane Mage concept and build.

Hey Guys.

I had a couple of FF slots so I decided to get a mage in the game which I'm leveling with a rudimentary sorcery build.

The concept I had in mind was a Survivable-DPS...
Well, I'm divided between an Earth-Sorcery Hybrid (I really like the Cave In animation and the summoning of earth concept) and a Fire-Sorcery Hybrid (that Hydra ultimate is sooo cool). Sorcery being the major chunk of powers in there.
I'd be really grateful for help in this regard.
A Fire-Sorcery hybrid and an Earth-Sorcery build sample...
A hybrid of both maybe?

Thanks for all the help you guys give out all the time and thanks in advance for this case in particular.



P.S. Gearing suggestions would be awesome too. I have a Legions Offense Gloves, Defense Breastplate and Utility Helm at my disposal.

    Can mix in more Earth powers in there, but you mentioned keeping it mostly Sorc, so I did. Main single-target rotation is to alternate between Eld Blast and Cave In w/ Preemptive Strike, throwing in Hex for debuffing. AoE is mostly using Skarn's + Hex. Gears mostly for Int, w/ some Con and Dex.


    A Fire version can be as easy as replacing Cave In w/ Fireball, and the ult w/ Hydra:

    Ofc, there's many other ways to mix the sets, but this can work now even w/ the Fire re-vamp.

    For gearing, I'd generally get crit and severity in offensive gear, maxHP and/or Defense in defensive slots, and a mix of cd reduction and cost discount in utility.

    How are these builds in comparison to a pure sorcery build in terms of DPS in your experience?

    Preemptive Strike builds w/ blasts and heavy charged attacks won't typically be as strong as single-target maintains for one powerset when optimized. But they can still do respectable dmg and have good burst dps w/ the charged non-blast attack.

    So @flowcyto if I use a pure sorcery build, technically I should have a better DPS output.

    Yea, well one of the reasons is cause keeping it in one set means you can more effectively take adv of dmg debuffs designed for that set or dmg type, instead of sometimes splitting the diff w/ another set using a diff dmg type. The other reason for Sorc in particular is just cause Soul Beam was designed to be its main attack for single target dps, when optimized. Doesn't mean other mixes or rotations do bad dps- just maybe not as much. Obv, ymmv on how much dps is 'good' enough.

    Hmmm. So Pillar of Poz... Expendable?
    That is to say, can I switch it out for an Ultimate or any other thematic power (Brimstone - you shall not pass!) or is it essential to the build, because I'm gonna go with the Sorcery DPS.
    Gearing suggestions for that will be awesome!

    This toon, I'm making for CCs so that he can have as many different outwardly visible power-sets represented while still maintaining the bare essential Soldier AT DPS capabilities.

    Yea, Pillar is expendable.

    The other build uses many power slots just for costume contests, so I'd be careful not letting them eat into your combat ability. If Lume Slash is for show then it takes a target to use, unless you meant to take Lightwave Slash?

    If using AR and its special adv, you'd prob want SMG Burst to build up 3x Furious (can get the shielding adv on it if you want for turtling, though it'll do less dmg and/or hit less targets), and Gatling w/ L2R adv to refresh Furious and apply/refresh AP debuff. I'd prob also trade LnL for something like R3 Conviction, and MotM for an AD like R2 Resurgence. May also change the stats and specs around to be more durable.

    Hey @flowcyto ...
    Can this build be made into a dual pistols setup instead of the munitions setup we've made so far?
    Like swapping out Sub-Machine Gun Burst for Two-Gun Mojo.
    What changes, if any would I have to make to the passives and debuffs/buffs?

    Yea, the changes can be pretty simple- like swapping SMG for Bullet Hail (or Lead Tempest, if you re-order the powers a bit), Gatling for Frag Nade w/ AP debuff adv, and AR for TGM. Nothing really needs to change w/ regards to passives or stats.

    Lead Tempest with R2 and Tread softly and 2GM with R2 and Close the gap will be ok or should I just go for R3?

    I'd prob get R3 on TGM for a ranged build. The dodge adv on LT can be okay, as long as ya don't mind losing some dps from it.
