Vanguard

Anywhere we can find more info about the guy who once managed to successfully solo Dr.Destroyer? All I could find out is that he's a Superman-expy, burned up in space fending off a giant space rock during the Battle of Detroit, is still considered to be the most powerful superhuman to have existed so far, and that he is most definitely not an archer (how'd you all mess that one up, Cryptic?).

Oh, and he's the guy responsible for the Soviet supervillian Spektr being a fish out of temporal water.

In 1959 a young soldier named Jeffrey Sinclair was guarding an American anthropological expedition in Tibet, when he became separated from his group during a snowstorm. He stumbled upon a hidden temple, whose monks nursed him back to health. The temple guarded a mysterious ancient artifact, called "the Bell of the Chosen." Curiosity led Sinclair to visit the room where the Bell was kept, when he felt compelled to ring it. The Bell somehow imbued him with fantastic strength and durability, and the power to move and even fly at incredible speed. (Contrary to appearances the Bell of the Chosen is not a magic item, but a product of alien technology.)

Returning to the United States, Sinclair adopted the identity of Vanguard. In 1962 he helped reform the Justice Squadron superhero team which had been active during WW II, along with a veteran of the original Squadron, the Drifter. Vanguard served with the Justice Squadron for thirty years, often overshadowing the rest of the team in the public consciousness. He also had several notable encounters with Dr. Destroyer, both with the JS and solo. Destroyer considered Vanguard one of his greatest foes.

(The above is summarized from Champions Beyond, which relates Vanguard's origin; as well as Book Of The Destroyer and Champions Universe: News Of The World.)

The references to the character in published books imply that Vanguard was held in public esteem on Champions Earth similarly to what's usually attributed to Superman in the DC comics universe: the hero's hero, the role model for all the others.

Just have to state publicly what I've repeated privately; Thundrax has nowhere near the prestige or power that the big V has in-universe. It's like comparing Superman and a second string veteran brickhouse who guest stars a lot but never has his own book. Thundrax's big claims to fame is his longevity and consistency.

So much stuff seems to come from there. I have a few books but not that one. Has there been a 6e version of it, or is the latest still 5e/5er?

Champions Beyond was written after 6E was published, and is entirely for that edition of HERO System. If you want information about the space/alien/cosmic side of the official Champions Universe, this is the book to go to.

Nice to know. And it looks like the hard copy is out of print or something. Might have to settle with just the PDF or end up paying a pretty penny on Amazon. Anyways, thanks for all the info!

Face it, Scott, celebrity fan-worship comes to you whether or not you think you deserve it. It's nice that Thundrax retains some humility. ;)
