What is required of a TA main tank?

zhilo1zhilo1 Posts: 14 Arc User
So I got some purple gear on my tank finally, a couple heroics with a legion utility, as well as full onslaught secondaries. My PFF build was fun to level up with and even stood up to gravitar, but I want to start earning gold recognition, and that means doing much more difficult content. I am not confident in my ability to survive the stuff TA trows at people, so, for now, i copied my character on the PTS and am testing different superstat/power combinations. The numbers are pretty and all, but I dont know what the softcaps i should be aiming for are. How much defense is good for a defiance tank? if I go wardicator, how much health and defense can I shave off to increase my crit chance trough specs? (currently i can barely manage 26% or so crit chance with 105 severity)

I think the gear i have right now is good enough to start tackling TA, but with respecs being so expensive, and me having run out of free retcons, i dont want to commit to a build untill i have done extensive research on the subject.

As for theme adherence, its somewhat simple, I just want a giant bulky robot. Might powers work well enough (Chest beam with point blank adv for crushing res debuff is fun to use, but its hard to hit more than three targets with the cilinder)

Could I get any advice from experienced endgame tanks?

26% char sheet crit for a tank not going heavy into Dex sounds okay, since ur getting more crit from specs as is.

I can't personally attest to running TA, but I imagine the general tanking advise follows: at least 2 ADs to cycle or fall back on, at least one other self-heal w/ a shorter cd, ranked block enhancer, Challenge for ST and AoE, etc. I dunno what your current maxHP is, but since ur a Defiance tank I'd be stacking Con very highly. Maybe players that have tanked it can share their stats, and or recommended stat values.

You really don't need any ADs for TA, 25% crit is plenty, make sure you have plenty of challenge on as many of your attacks as possible, this way you're keeping it up no matter where you are in your rotation(putting ups bleeds, building enrage, whatever). As long as the healer is even remotely decent you should be all right with no problems.

Im glad to hear i should worry that much about crit. my other big worry is the defense stat, if i go with a sentinel mastery build, stregnth primary and about 300 con, i get around 267 defense, which the tooltip says is 63% damage reduction.
I cold get more con for more defense, but i wanted to keep at least 200 str to have some knockback resistance. These stats leave me with 12,878 hp.

Are these numbers good for tanking gold recog stuff, or should i turn to wardicator for more defense and offense, while sacrificing all the healing sentinel provides?

All of TA can technically be tanked by a DPS with 9-10k hp, but it's rough on the healer. A sentinel build with 12-13k hp and defiance or invulnerability is tough enough to make it not too annoying for the healer, at that point it's mostly about threat and technical tanking skills (block timing, etc).

Yeah, the main thing about TA is the tactics. Any Defiance/Invul tank build with decent CON should do okay, as long as you have plenty of threat and KNOW WHEN TO BLOCK. Don't worry if you don't get it on the first (dozen) try. Once you get the practice down, you should be fine.
