Heavenly HW Tank

kamokamikamokami Posts: 1,633 Arc User
This is a Heavy Weapons build that uses a lot of powers with Light/Celestial effects. It's quite unique but also effective. Main premise relies on Presence PSS' Moment of Glory to get a massive boost to Critical Chance + AoE Heals for increased threat and utility during Cosmics. Gear for around 250 DEX and around 500 CON.

Other synergies in the build:
Form of the Tiger scales off DEX and provides lots of energy.
Force of Will (Presence spec) provides a sizable boost to defense which feeds the Wardicator loop.
Will o Wisp provides Illumination for Ascension adv, Clinging Flames for Annihilate, Fear for Spirit Reverbration
Ascension adv is like a second Resurgence
Pillar of Poz provides a great AoE heal and PBAoE Challenge
Soul Vortex feeds Spirit Reverberation and provides a heal

Was a fun challenge to put together after talking to a friend about having a hard time making a Heavenly HW Tank.

Looks pretty nice overall, for a Pres PSS build. I may replace PF w/ a spammable AoE, though- prob Arc of Ruin since it also works w/ FotT and can debuff.

Cool build. I've been wondering about the viability of a Pre-based tank. I was curious about Plannar Fracture. Is it providing something special other than spike damage? Also curious about Eldritch Shield as the block. Any special reason? What kind of mods would you be using?

I've wanted to do a build using some chains for awhile. Would something like this work as a variation of the above? I'm not sure if Compassion would work well here. Might have to go to FotT with Dex SSS and in talents again. Soul Vortex could go to Planar Fracture, or some other Ultimate (maybe Gravity Driver and switch R2 in Iron Chain to Demolish?). Maybe Masterful Dodge instead of CoPD, which would free a couple points for travel powers, or would he be too prone to knocks (though there is now some extra KB resistance from Antagonize and Reckless with IC). Confront mod and Sentinel Brooch in Offensive primary piece?

Cool build. I've been wondering about the viability of a Pre-based tank. I was curious about Plannar Fracture. Is it providing something special other than spike damage?

It's not too great for spike damage. It does proc a wide variety of debuffs for the team and deals a decent amount of DoT damage.

Also curious about Eldritch Shield as the block. Any special reason?

Mostly to roll along with the light-based theme. Other than that, it provides more resistance vs non-physical damage than any other shield. So it would be best vs Kiga, Eido, Slug, and Oubliette.

What kind of mods would you be using?

Whichever ones let me get to around 250 DEX and around 500 CON. If you're asking about cores in particular....
prim off: either DUC+Confront, 2x Confront, or Gambler+Confront
    prim def: 2x Impact
prim util: 1 cost redux+HW dmg mod (Ironclad's Will)

I've wanted to do a build using some chains for awhile. Would something like this work as a variation of the above? I'm not sure if Compassion would work well here. Might have to go to FotT with Dex SSS and in talents again.

Compassion could work well, just know that it would cause the build to take a big hit in damage output due to its lower buff in the General Bonus layer. You could make up for this hit by choosing powers with higher base damage.

Chains won't stack FotT anyways. For those I'd suggest a Might, Bestial, or Infernal Tank.

Soul Vortex could go to Planar Fracture, or some other Ultimate (maybe Gravity Driver and switch R2 in Iron Chain to Demolish?).

The optimal Ultimate with FotT would be Vorpal Blade. Barring that, Fury of the Dragon. I had Planar Fracture in there more for theme than anything else. It has nice debuffs though so in a team setting, it's still very effective. If not going with FotT or Enrage (Unleashed Rage then), your ultimate will be less about dealing maximum damage and more about debuffing for the team. In which Crashing Incantation, Grav Driver, etc...are all good choices.

Maybe Masterful Dodge instead of CoPD, which would free a couple points for travel powers, or would he be too prone to knocks (though there is now some extra KB resistance from Antagonize and Reckless with IC).

Yeah MD would be great to fit in. As a matter of personal preference, I really really dislike to be knocked around on a tank...hence the CoPD. But others prefer counters for other dangers. So this is more about what you'd prefer as opposed to what's objectively better.

Confront mod and Sentinel Brooch in Offensive primary piece?

Confront mod (r6+) + Gambler (r7+) would be optimal....assuming you can't slot a DUC in there. Or if you really want to go for maximum threat then 2 confront mods. Sentinel Brooch (r7+) would not be a bad choice either considering all the heals.

Is this purely an offtank? If so then it's fine. If you intend to main tank (in the endgame) with it, your primary single target damage power needs to have high base damage. Iron lariat won't cut it with Compassion as a toggle.

Haymaker, Annihilate, Devour Essence, Massacre....etc that's more along the lines of what you'd need as a main tank.

Pillar of Poz and Iron Chain don't both need Challenge. Keep it on the chain and drop it from poz. This is because secondary challenge does not stack....so having it on multiple PBAoE powers is redundant.

If you really wanna go all in on Chains + Presence Healing Tank, I highly recommend looking at the Infernal set (and damage form) with Devour Essence for your primary attack and Supernatural Possession as the EU.

I think I'm going to give this a try.

The Toggle Form is the tricky part. If I go for Compassion I get more heals and energy but less damage. I can go AotB with Str SSS or FotT with DeX SSS and can do a bit more damage, but get less healing. Not sure which will be more important. I'll keep the Form in the last slot and try a few different combinations and see which helps the most.

Thanks for all the feedback. Took him for a spin against dino and ape this morning using Compassion for the toggle. Pretty durable. I'm trying Reverence with Conviction to help a bit with heals for other tanks. Kind of cool having all those little extra bits of healing going on.

This is a slight bit of necro, but the superstats here (pss Pre, sss Con and Dex) are my faves. If this is a bad place for this question, I can start a new thread.

If I were going to try this on more of a dark/infernal build, would Spirit Reverb still be a good idea?

I was thinking of using Devour Essence as my single target attack with Challenge. It just seems to me that I should be able to maintain my main attack while getting energy back. I don't suppose Life Drain works as well as Devour Essence?

If I stick with Spirit Reverb (which does run off Con), should use an insta fear, like from Ghost Flames on Will o the Wisp and just drop a DoT (Rift, Vortex, etc) on mobs? Or would that be a micromanagement nightmare?

I'd probably go with Form of the Tempest, since my crit is pretty solid and I can get tics while maintaining Devour Essence. The only thing I don't like about this kind of setup is most of Dark and Infernal is ranged damage, so only benefits a little from FotT.

I don't really have a build atm, just wanted some advice before I throw things together.

You prob should have just made a new thread, since it has gone quite off-track from the theme of a Heavenly HW tank now anyways. Oh well.. I'd suggest a build, but since its Kamo's thread I'll see if he wants to handle this request himself.

What do you envision this toon being good at? The more detailed your answer to this question, the easier it will be to put a build together and answer your questions above.

The short answer is I'm not exactly sure. The character's concept is a living nightmare with dark/infernal/magic powers (a bit of psi/telepathy, too but I don't expect much from telepathy anymore). I've DPS'ed all the cosmics before, and I consider myself decent at it, though not outstanding.

The long answer: Well, I'm sorta between tanking and healing Cosmics atm. I like running cosmic content and soloing in QWZ. I can do okay with DPS role in group content, but I don't consider that role that demanding. I have no experience tanking in this game, aside from those alerts where I pull aggro. I like healing, but, I'm not very fond of the straight heal abilities. I like lifedrain, and had considered throwing together a hybrid lifedrain/heal build, but I'm not sure how to balance that so it would be useful for its dps and heals.

When I saw this build, it intrigued me because of the unconventional superstat setup. I like how the individual small heals add up to enhance the tank's toughness. I also like "oddball" setups with one or two commonly used powers, AO/AD, and the rest as utility or for certain situations/EU, etc.

The actual answer to your question: I was curious about what a tank with similar powers, but dark/infernal, would look like.

I have a character FOREVER KNIGHT. So he uses swords instead of Chains. Can I use above build and replace chain with Arc of Ruin and Cleave? If so I will need a different Toggle.

There's a few builds listed here. Do you mean Jazz's 2nd one?

Either. the concept is a knight in a blessed/cursed suit of armor making him a Forever Knight. So Celestial/Heavy Weapons. IS there any synergy for tanking/off tanking?

Well, fortunately Sorcery has some powers that can be similar to Celestial in theme (makes some sense, since the old Sorcery had a Radiant sub-set), but also have more effective functionality. One example of mixing them:

    (Unnamed Build) - Freeform

    Super Stats
    Level 6: Constitution (Primary)
    Level 10: Dexterity (Secondary)
    Level 15: Intelligence (Secondary)

    Talents
    Level 1: The Glacier (Con: 10, End: 10, Dex: 8, Int: 10)
Level 6: Covert Ops Training (Str: 3, Dex: 3, Con: 3, Int: 3)
    Level 9: Acrobat (Dex: 5, Con: 5)
Level 12: Healthy Mind (Con: 5, Int: 5)
    Level 15: Coordinated (Dex: 5, Int: 5)
Level 18: Quick Recovery (Con: 5, Rec: 5)
    Level 21: Impresario (Dex: 5, Rec: 5)

    Powers
    Level 1: Radiance
Level 1: Cleave (Rank 2, Rank 3, Challenge!)
    Level 6: Defiance
Level 8: Form of the Tempest
    Level 11: Conviction (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 14: Molecular Self-Assembly
Level 17: Arc of Ruin (Rank 2, No Quarter, Challenge!)
Level 20: Pillar of Poz (Rank 2, Dizzying Impact)
    Level 23: Resurgence (Rank 2)
Level 26: Will-o'-the-Wisp (Guide, Ghost Fire)
    Level 29: Ascension (Judgment)
    Level 32: Masterful Dodge
Level 35: Eldritch Shield (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 38: Circle of Primal Dominion (Rank 2)
    Adv. Points: 34/36

    Travel Powers
    Level 6: Athletics (Rank 2)
Level 35: Phoenix Flight (Rank 2)

    Specializations
    Constitution: Unyielding (1/2)
    Constitution: Fuel My Fire (3/3)
    Constitution: Resilient (2/2)
    Constitution: Adrenaline Rush (2/2)
    Constitution: Armored (2/2)
    Warden: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Warden: Ruthless (2/2)
    Warden: Elusive (2/2)
    Warden: The Best Defense (3/3)
    Vindicator: Aggressive Stance (2/2)
    Vindicator: Merciless (3/3)
    Vindicator: Offensive Expertise (2/2)
    Vindicator: Mass Destruction (3/3)
    Mastery: Constitution Mastery (1/1)

Expulse could work instead of Pillar if you want more Celestial in there, as it also drops a healing rune- though Pillar is nice in not needing to be charged. Arc can debuff and pbAoE, Cleave is ur main filler, and Pillar and Wisp debuff, heal you a lil, and can proc MSA. Illumination from Wisp can also be used w/ Ascension's adv. Normally would take ES/NM for the AO, but this is more thematic, and still useful (in a diff way- plus its a nice break from ES/NM). Gears mostly for Con and Dex.
