What's up with those numbers on account handles nowadays?

I'm not sure if this's been brought up somewhere before or not, though I know it was around before I left CO last time, and I can't find any threads.

Why do we have numbers after our account handles? Is it sort of an account ID number? And why do the old accounts not get adjusted with it? Not saying I want to see that happen, but clearly they don't need the extra digits any more than we do.

If someone makes an account like... @bob, it instead becomes something like @bob#8976. It's not much, but it kinda bugs me. Personally I'd rather just be @xel, not @xel#8768. If someone can fix that for me, I'd appreciate it.

They added them onto new accounts several months ago. It's simply a way of expanding possible account names. There's no fix, that's just the way it is.

This is actually not the only game that does this. Guild Wars 2 apparently did it from the start.

Now I wonder if someone can actually make another account with the same name as one of the in-game ones. If they can, okay I guess, though as far as I know, there isn't another @xel... but then again, it's a short name, and people like short names. Could very well have been used.

    ...

And it has been, I see. The info's weird though. Joined in 2008 apparently, last active December "1969"? Also no posts. Maybe they never did anything with it, which makes me sad 'cause I ran into this same sorta situation on the Chucklefish forum (Starbound-related thing). Someone who never really used their account, but 'cause of it existing, even though they're likely never coming back, I've got these extra digits.

I know, it's silly to be bothered about, but it'd be nice to rid myself of the numbers, so it'd be like the old days. I guess the little things bug me.

Do you have the numbers added after your in-game handle, or just here in the forums?

The numbers are there just to act as helpful tags that indicate to others that the particular individual is incredibly awesome and amazing at the game. @behemothking#9246 :^)

    close,
    1. we had a few people copying other peoples handles in order to scam under their name. like changing a O for an 0. you get to pick the first but the last is random
    2. extra numbers.

    So...

I just performed a bit of an experiment. It appears that even if a name has never been used ONCE, it still gets that ID number slapped on the end.

Those of the community who were fortunate enough to create an account before this occurred... I envy you.

It's standard practice of the online world now. Hell Blizzard's been doing that for years with account ID's and everyone seems to love them and claim they can do no wrong.

Maybe all the original non number names are taken? O.-.o
Want to get to know me a bit better, Click me and take a read of My Dragon Profile Page, it's a bit dated but still relevant.

I take this quote from a review that I agree with.

"customisation is so linear; everyone is after the optimal dps:survivability ratio with 0 reliance on other players = autonomous gameplay... Players don't need each other anymore... which in my opinion is a bad thing."

No. It would have been silly to wait for that to happen. They just saw it coming.
