Request: Pack Alpha Pet Build

So, I had the brilliant idea to make a werewolf themed toon and bring up a bunch of wolf summons. I know call animals, Circle of Primal Summoning, and Arctic Beast all summon wolves, and I was thinking that the loyal ice wolf pet would also go in there pretty well.

...but I don't know the first thing about pet builds, at all.

I was kinda hoping to be able to lead them into battle as a Supernatural Bestial tank(ish) toon or direct them from the rear as a ranged Ice DPS toon.

...but again, I don't know the first thing about pet builds.

What do I need to know about building a summoner, what pitfalls should I avoid, general play guidelines, and maybe some build help would all be appreciated.

Here's something I came up with, I'm not sure how well it will work.

I've got IDF/AoRP simulating Invincible for the entire group of wolves, I use a basic claw spam w/Supernatural Power (because the pets knock the equilibrium down and I should be able to keep things running using that EU), and I can use Howl/Lifedrain as buffs/debuffs/heals.

    Thoughts?

I played with it a little and came up with this - a bit more in the shadow, this is based off Flowcyto's Wolfpack (which was what I was kinda going for already), and pushed more onto theme.

This one is all about damage, and from that older build I replaced conviction with lifedrain (Click Heal vs. Channeled AOE heal), Cyclone with Frenzy (aoe combo for theme vs. the knock), Demolish with Howl (the debuff/buff aspect with the minor heal rather than a single target attack - this may have been a mistake, but Howl allows easy application of fear for some CC and triggers Lifedrain's advantage), and Parry, Summon Zombies, Devour Essence, and Toxic Bolt with Ebon Void, Summon Shadows, Thrash, and Shadow Bolt.

I had considered working Avalanche and the Serrated Shards in to trigger more crits for the Create an Opening to work for Ebon Ruin's lightning in, but I'm not sure what I would take out, and it being a ranged power is not really what this thing is about.

If I have TWO of the ice-wolf-device loyal companion devices, can I activate on as soon as the first one goes on cooldown for 100% uptime?

Keep in mind that although AoED is optimal dps for pet builds, if you wanted to simulate a defensive passive for ur pet (and you to a lesser extent) then you'd want AoRP as the passive. That will mean considerably lower dps overall, though, so its up to you.

The edited build is alright from a basic standpoint, though you may want an AD like Resurgence in there, and/or a threat wipe like Palliate/absolve. To free up adv points, you could knock some ranks off the pets to rank up things like Howl (lowered cd for more uptime) or any of the other later powers. In terms of dps, Command Animals will prob deal the most of the three and can inflict a mini version of shredded at r3, whereas r2 of the Primal summon doesn't add much of value beyond a base dmg boost. I'd prob also take a point from Fortified Gear to max Ruthless in Warden.

Also there's the usual disclaimer I have to give now that pet builds aren't very compatible for much high-end content now, so you may want to consider making ur setup decent even w/o any pets (w/ AoED and not many support tools, you'd prob then want to switch to Hybrid role and act like a solo dps unit).
