Energy Unlock for ninja-themed build.

So, I haven't played this game for a while and it seems like a lot has changed. But one idea I had last time I played was to combine Void Shift and Spirit Reverberation with the Martial Arts powers that do dimensional damage (primarily One Hundred Hands). Is that still a viable build, or am I better of just using the new Steadfast energy unlock? I'm kind of a sucker for weird synergy builds like Darkness + MA, but the theme of the character would work perfectly fine with an all MA build as well.

Steadfast is better now if ur mostly keeping ur attacks in MA. I'd only consider SReverb in an Unarmed MA build now if you also wanted to use some Dimensional attacks from the ranged powersets that have them (beyond Ebon Shift, ofc).

Thanks. that's what I suspected. I don't have a finalized build yet, but I figured I would probably want to use a few more Darkness powers. Ebon Ruin for the debuff, Shadow Shroud with Terrifying Visage as another fear applier and maybe Summon Shadows for some form of shadow clone-thing. But I'm not super familiar with the Darkness tree, so maybe there's other good options. I'm not sure is Shadow Form is the best slotted passive for a build like this, but if so there might also be some useful abilites from the magic or mentalist sets (or maybe that's for another build, but the fact that both Shadow form and Seraphim boosts three different kinds of magic intrigues me).

Well, if ur still mostly using MA attacks, then I'd prob stick w/ WotW or Unstoppable, since they boost all melee dmg and have a smaller general dmg boost. Or go w/ Night Warrior and boosts everything evenly..

Ooohhh, Night Warrior is a great Idea. Maybe throw in ricochet throw and gas pellets for a more gadget-style ninja.
The big problem is that all of the MA moves with dimensional damage aside from 100 hands (DU, BCF, OPS) are all charged single target damage. Kinda feel like I need abilities from other sets just for utility. So it's NW with some gadgets (and maybe backhand chop to get extra focus stacks?), or Shadow Shroud with some paranormal attacks. I see that Hex of Suffering has a fear advantage now...

Yea, there's other ways of putting up Fear outside of Darkness. All up to you what attacks you want to include, but its hard to go wrong w/ RThrow (+adv) w/ NW- at least as an opener from Sneak. Also, if ur using an MA form already (I assume FotT) then getting Backhand Chop for the Focus stack won't matter much as its capped at 8 stacks regardless, and if ur using a diff toggle then one stack of Focus isn't adding much as is.

Yeah, NW, FotT and Rthrow sounds good. So good in fact that I'm kinda tempted to turn it into a build of its own (everyone needs a Batman knockoff, don't they?) with MA and gadget powers instead.
Would you suggest any attacks from the ranged powersets that would work well with Spirit Reverb, Shadow Form and an MA theme? I haven't familiarized myself with the changes to sorcery/darkness/celestial yet.

Keep in mind that only Dimensional dmg will proc SReverb, so the only other powerset that's any easy sub atm is Celestial. Sorcery mostly uses Magic dmg now.

Here's one way to build MA w/ some Darkness and SReverb:

    (Unnamed Build) - Freeform

    Super Stats
    Level 6: Strength (Primary)
    Level 10: Dexterity (Secondary)
    Level 15: Constitution (Secondary)

    Talents
    Level 1: The Master (Con: 10, Str: 10, Dex: 10, Rec: 8)
Level 6: Covert Ops Training (Str: 3, Dex: 3, Con: 3, Int: 3)
    Level 9: Acrobat (Dex: 5, Con: 5)
Level 12: Physical Conditioning (Str: 5, Con: 5)
Level 15: Martial Focus (Str: 5, Dex: 5)
Level 18: Quick Recovery (Con: 5, Rec: 5)
    Level 21: Impresario (Dex: 5, Rec: 5)

    Powers
    Level 1: Shadow Bolt
Level 1: Shadow Embrace (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 6: Spirit Reverberation
Level 8: Form of the Tempest
Level 11: Way of the Warrior (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 14: Void Shift (Emerging Nightmares)
Level 17: Bountiful Chi Resurgence (Rank 2, Resurgent Reiki)
Level 20: Dragon Uppercut (Rank 2, Chi Flame)
Level 23: One Hundred Hands (Rank 2, Rank 3, Ghostly Strikes)
    Level 26: Resurgence (Rank 2)
Level 29: Soul Vortex (Rank 2, Soul Drain)
Level 32: Ebon Void (Voracious Darkness)
Level 35: Ego Surge (Nimble Mind)
    Level 38: Rebirth
    Adv. Points: 34/36

    Travel Powers
    Level 6:
    Level 35:

    Specializations
    Strength: Swole (2/3)
    Strength: Physical Peak (3/3)
    Strength: Brutality (2/2)
    Strength: Juggernaut (3/3)
    Warden: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Warden: Ruthless (2/2)
    Warden: Elusive (2/2)
    Warden: The Best Defense (3/3)
    Vindicator: Aggressive Stance (2/2)
    Vindicator: Merciless (3/3)
    Vindicator: Focused Strikes (2/3)
    Vindicator: Mass Destruction (3/3)
    Mastery: Strength Mastery (1/1)

Gears mostly for Dex and Con.

Oh, that's right. Thanks for the tips. Not sure how well Embrace and Vortex will fit the theme, but I'll check it out.

Chi flame and ghostly strikes seems like it should do the job. Soul Vortex is pretty much a one-and-done for SReverb, as it does dimensional damage and also procs fear.

Yea Soul Vortex can do many things on its own for a setup like this, which is why I included it in the build even w/ other ways to put up Fear and deal Dimensional dmg.

I've been looking over the Darkness set and while your build works very well it just doesn't look right for a ninja themed build. I think I'd rather just go ahead and make that toon a straight up conventional MA build (dodge- and critmonkey Night Warrior with Steadfast and FotT).
But I'm still liking spirit reverb as a concept, so I'm probably going to use that for a different toon. Maybe go the other way around and slot in a few MA powers in a primarily Darkness-based build. Would Ego form work for that as well? Since it has the same paranormal damage boost and also a boost to physical damage.
  • flowcytoflowcyto Posts: 12,858 Arc User
Yeah Ego Form would be a good pick- prob better than Shadow Form for a build mixing Dimensional w/ MA.

So, I've been looking at this a bit more, and I think I'm going to go ahead with your suggestion for darkness + MA, only with Ego Form instead of WotW and maybe lifedrain instead of shadows embrace (feels like it overlaps a bit with 100 hands). Between the teleport, 100 hands and vortex it has a bit of portal feel to it.

But I'm not as sure what to do with the ninja-themed character yet. Maybe something like this?

The NW build looks mostly fine, though Throwing Blades is prob not needed w/ RThrow taken, and the build needs it normal advs filled out. Could also throw Gas Pellets or Shuriken powers in there, though its more for the theme as they aren't strictly necessary. Also keep in mind that Parry's EM and BCR will give you a 20% final dmg penalty when using both w/ melee attacks.

Lastly, you'll want to get Deadly Aim and Expose Weakness in Dex PSS- the dodge/avoid options are kinda weak and make you skip out on the best parts of the tree (imo).

Yeah, I know, I'll try it out a bit when I level the build to see if I really need both TEM and RR. I might not go with Parry at all, now that I think about it the new cower block seems fitting for a stealth based character. I'll finalize the advantages when I've decided what powers I want. There's still no active offence or defence and I have two slots left to fill out if I drop Throwing Blades. Is Ego Surge with Nimble Mind still the universal go-to?
Spec trees are still one of my weak points when it comes to this game. Thanks for the pointers.

Yea, ES/NM is the clear winner for burst dps of the AOs- as long as you have a decent amount of Con. For Con-less builds you could try Imbue, LNL, or Ice Sheath instead- maybe Aggressor for Enrage builds, but none of them will be upto par w/ ES/NM + Con.

Yeah I figured I would have to stack quite some CON. Although Imbue with the threat wipe advantage sounds pretty good for a stealth build as well.
