HeroCreator - A descendant of the PowerHouse

edited September 2018 in Builds and Roles
Just like the program it's descended from, HeroCreator is a Javascript-based character planner for Champions Online. Anyone familiar with the PowerHouse (which I imagine is just about most of you) should feel right at home.

HeroCreator Changelog

PLEASE let me know if anything is broken or inaccurate. This thread is an excellent place to do so.

List of known issues/todo list:
 - Many powers still have the older, less-informative tooltips
 - Add a "role selector" (hopefully without breaking everything else!)

Special thanks of course goes out to Nullware for creating the PowerHouse.

Edit: Mother of god, Form Extension what have you done!?
(Hopefully) Useful CO Resources: HeroCreator (character planner), Cosmic Timers/Alert Checklist, Blood Moon Map, Anniversary Cat Map, and more (eventually, anyway).

Cool. Many thanks. Is there a way to import characters done in PowerHouse into HeroCretor? That would save a lot of time and be a huge benefit.

    Sort of. But not reliably.

If you take a build made in the powerhouse, such as this (I just clicked random things, this is an awful build that no one should play!)

    http://powerhouse.nullware.com/powerhouse.html?v=13&n=&d=11237DBCFGH70G0N000N203J105N400N103J400K707J504IH03I309I200I603QE01Q4030i5r11F011F1

And copy the part highlighted in red, you can paste it to the end of the base herocreator URL:

    http://aesica.net/co/herocreator.htm?v=13&n=&d=11237DBCFGH70G0N000N203J105N400N103J400K707J504IH03I309I200I603QE01Q4030i5r11F011F1

For...mixed results. Anything in the Sorcery, Bestial, or Infernal frameworks will probably either shift to another framework or vanish entirely because of the sorcery set squish. Other powers may just shuffle around, advantages might poof, etc.

Here you can compare the two:

    Original build via PowerHouse
    Partially-successful HeroCreator import

As you can see, most of the powers vanished or changed, several advantages got dropped and the specializations poofed. It's still partially salvageable.

Sounds like it will be easier to just rebuild them in the new planner than to try to import. Just wondered if there was a function somewhere that I missed.

Or you could edit your links to delete the first part of the url and copy / paste with the new part. Some stuff will still be broken, but some stuff won't. It'll be a surprise.

Preferences don't seem to save. Pretty sure they used to once upon a time. My guess is something with cookies.

Edit: Also, doesn't the spoiler tag work? Putting the changelog in a spoiler would look better than the code block, which has h-scrolling.

The settings are weird on both PH and HC. The font should be saving, but the other things don't seem to save on either. I'll add that to my list of things to look into. Hopefully it's as simple as adding a "Save Changes" button that commits everything to a cookie.

And yeah, I guess the code block is styled kind of uglyish.

Edit: That said, I think I'm taking a few days off. I want to play the game too. :D

Great to see this up and running.
    -The Automaton is missing.
-Arguably, The Scourge and The Cursed should share a dropdown since the latter is just a recolor of the former.

I thought about combining the scourge and cursed, but figured I'd leave them separate in case cryptic ever changes one, but not the other.

As for the Automaton...LOL I think I know what happened.

Anyway, I added a todo/known issues list to the main post to better keep track of feedbacks. Keep 'em coming!

Some quick feedback just from early use:

    - I have issues seeing the light blue text on white backdrops, like when using the Preview post format here on the boards.
    - The greyed-out text color should prob be a bit brighter than it is. Imo, there's a bit too much contrast between it and the highlight tints, and its dark grey text is close to the black and dark grey backdrop tints (most notable when selecting talents and spec points).
    - I had trouble highlighting only parts of the Export tab text - say if I wanted to only cut and paste part of a build.
    - I like how the Export tab was more horizontal in the PH, to need less vertical scrolling.. but this is a minor preference.
    - Bright blue in general works well for contrast and hyperlinks, but in bulk it seems a bit more irritating on the eyes. I'm not sure what colors would be best here for long-term usability, though.

    Hope that helped some.

I'm 99.9% sure I'm getting rid of export colors entirely. Even the old powerhouse export colors were a pain to view on the white preview background, plus they also don't look good on lighter-themed forums in general. , I think it's probably best to just let whichever forum they're being posted to use its native coloring. I'm pretty pleased with the markdown formatting, which uses combinations of bold, italic, and underline but no coloring at all) so that's probably what I'll go with for forums as well.

As for the talent stats' highlighted/grayed contrast, I wanted to make talent selection less of a pain by making it easier to see which talents had a user's chosen superstats. Maaaaaybe I went over the top a bit. I'll lessen the contrast a bit

With highlighting, I guess it never occurred to me that people may want to paste only certain parts, such as just the powers. I'll change the select-all behavior to be activated by a button rather than clicking the textarea in the next build, allowing people to either select part of it manually like before, or 1-click to select all. I might make it wider again as well--I wanted it to be roughly as wide s the other boxes, but CSS just loves to screw with me and it already fails.

Yea, allowing 'select all' to be a simple button/option instead sounds like a good compromise on the exports.

In light of introducing more options- since the hues are a bit of a sticking point, maybe try to introduce the option to colorize text in different preset ways (including de-coloring)? Only if it wouldn't be too hard to work in, though.

    Keep up the good work.

Select all button was cake to add and works like a charm. It should be available in the next update.

My main goal is to make the text usable on as many forums, sites, whatevers, etc as possible, so color themes aren't a huge priority since as I said, what looks great on one theme can be nearly unreadable on another. Maybe I'll add export themes sometime in the far future, but for now, I want to make other tweaks first.

Hm, is it adding stat info for the Talents on export? (which is nice) That, or ur referring to italicizing that rank/points in parentheses, which I guess I can understand if ur using grayscale now.

Thundering Kicks can have the "Challenge!" advantage, but HeroCreator doesn't list that advantage for that power. (I haven't done any sort of exhaustive testing or comparison, here, just happened to notice this when trying to recreate a build I have on live.)

Very nice work, though, and much appreciated! I can finally get writeups together for my heavy weapons based builds!

These are 2 things I always wished were in PH.

    1. Is there a way to list character stats and enter their point values. E.g. the way they appear in our Champion Information.
    2. Is there a possibility of having 5 fields with drop down menus to list permanent devices?

These may not be at all feasible, but they sure would be handy :)

Hello Aesica, thanks for this new awesome tool. I have found some bugs with the Archetypes that have been recently modified this year. Here's a small list:
-The Devastator is using the old power progression prior to March 2016, when the Rockstar AT was added.
-The Void is using the old power progression prior to the Darkness revision added with the First Nightmare Invasion event.
-The Specialist is using the old power progression prior its revision back on February of this year.
-The Savage is using the old power progression prior its revision back on May, when the Predator AT was added.

Well so far those are the only issues I've found so far. Will post more if I find more things that need to be corrected.

Hai guise! So yeah, I did some stuff:
    aesica said:

    10/24/2016 - Aesica
    - Updated the Devastator, Void, Savage, and (this time for real!) Specialist archetypes to properly reflect what's in the game.
    - Added the Automaton back in. (Yeah, my bad!)
    - Added tooltip text for each archetype explaining how it's obtained as well as which role it gets assigned.
    - Added the rest of the missing icons.
    - Lightened the shade of gray used to denote unavailable powers, or talent stats that don't correspond with chosen superstats.
    - Added some advantages I overlooked in the initial pass, namely those associated with Skarn's Bane, Thundering Kicks, and a few others.
    - Removed export text coloring entirely, instead opting for combinations of bold, italic, and underlining to set things apart. This allows the text to be more easily shown on a wider variety of forums--both light-themed and dark-themed.
    - Removed the on-click autoselect that happens when clicking the export textarea, allowing those who want to copy only a portion of the export to do so more easily. The whole export can still be quickly selected for copy/pasta via the newly-added 'Quick Select' button. It's the best of both worlds!

I'll update the initial post to reflect this in a moment.

Thanks for doing this, Aesica, it's appreciated.

That said, long term I think lots of people would like to see HC becoming a character planner rather than a character
explainer (which I think it is at the moment). How much easier it would be to use something like that to pre-plan spec and stat changes, rather than having to spend eternity in the Powerhouse....

Soul Beam is a 3/4 power despite its tooltip listing it as 5/6. This just illustrates the precarious nature of CO's tooltip system, as it means much of what's shown is manually entered rather auto-generated based on the power's properties.

    image

Edit: Oops, imgur is being crap again.

Edit2: That said, hopefully it's a tooltip error on CO's end and not a tier level error. Soul Beam isn't so amazing that it should be 5/6, so 3/4 seems about right.

Thanks for doing this, Aesica, it's appreciated.

Stat/gear/etc management make things a lot trickier, and I suspect that's why the original PowerHouse never actually implemented them.

So far things are looking awesome. Thought I'd make a suggestion in regards to a small peeve of mine when using the original PowerHouse.

When selecting Talents in a Freeform template, your superstats are highlighted so you can easily see which talents affect them. However, when you are selecting Talents in an AT template, there is no highlighting. Can you make it so that AT's superstats are highlighted?

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. It looks like a bug that causes highlights to not update when superstats are auto-selected and should be easy to fix. I'll add it to my list. In the meantime, you can get around it by:

    1) Select your AT

    2) Change setting to freeform

    3) Change one of the superstats to something else, then set it back to what it was originally. (Example: Ego -> Pre -> Ego)

    4) Change back to your AT and they should all be highlighted.

Note: If you change to a different AT with different superstats, the previous AT's will still be highlighted until you go through the steps outlined above again.

    - Added tooltips to the export formatting options to help users decide which best suits their needs.
    - Fixed a bug that was causing talents to not update their superstat highlighting when selecting an archetype.
    - Fixed a bug that was causing Magician's Dust to not be selectable.

Hi, aesica. Thanks for fixing the superstat highlighting when working with Archtypes. Found another bug for you. Tested this in Chrome and Firefox to verify it wasn't my browser...

When working with an Archtype, the pop-up tooltip does not change on the powers that have multiple options and you select the alternative power. It shows the tooltip for the original power selection. This does not appear to be an issue with Freeform.

Hi again aesica, I found another bug regarding the Predator AT. This archetype is able to choose between Antagonize and Retalation, however while Antagonize is brightened to show a possible power choice, when you click on it, Retalation does not appear.

Also I have a couple of Suggestions for you regarding unlockable Premium ATs during certain events, adding a clarification line to the AT's description like you have added to the Cursed which is unlockable in October during the Bloodmoon Event.
    1. The Icicle can be unlocked for free during the Winter Event on December.
    2. The Devastator can be unlocked for free during the rotative Circus Malvanum Event.
    3. The Void can be unlocked for free during the rotative Nightmare Invasion Event.
    4. The Night Avenger can be unlocked for free during the Nighthawk Event on November.

Thanks for the continued feedback, folks. :D

Rebirth Icon: I'll update this eventually, but it's an extremely small priority and will probably stay as is until I next go to add additional icons.

Archetype power swap tooltip bug: It's a really old bug that I just kinda...put out of my mind when I encountered it in the powerhouse way back. Thanks for the reminder, and I suspect the fix will be as simple as the AT stat highlighting was. I hope.

Premium ATs for free in events: I started to do this (it's already shown for The Void) but hadn't gotten around to finding a comprehensive list of what the other ones were or where they came from. Until now. Thanks. :)

I'm currently working on a project unrelated to CO, so I probably won't be changing/fixing any of these things until the next set of powers (infernal changes, Witch AT, etc) gets patched onto live. Just to explain any delays. :D

Hi again Aesica, I found a very small bug regarding Divine Renewal from Sorcery, its advantage "Radiant Renewal" in the planner shows to cost only 2 adv points when in-game it costs 3. Also found another bug where the Sigil type powers advantage called Mystic Transference costs 2 points instead of 1.

    Some things to fix:

    - intelligence tree's "revitalize" has a 6 sec cd, not 2 sec.
    - munitions' "lead tempest" cannot take "challenge" advantage. however it has a "maybe i'm just better" advantage, which lets it stack furious
    - electricity's "electric sheathe", "matter-energy union" advantage does not do what its description says. it actually provides a flat shield similar how force's "field surge" works.

Actually, matter-energy union does at least appear to work as described. It says there's a maximum, and that max is the "flat shield" you're seeing. And, at least the last time I tested it, it was definitely costing energy too.

Now, if you want to point out powers whose description doesn't match their current effects, I'd suggest starting by looking over melee combo powers; several of those were updated to AoE, but are still showing as single-target.

No, it is 100% flat. It might scale with levels though, but it does not scale with superstats or energy pool. I did test again and saw the energy drain tho, so my bad on that part.

    No gear equipped - Lvl 40 - 196 max energy : 3571 shield
    All gear equipped - Lvl 40 - 871 max energy : 3571 shield

If you manage to get a value besides 3571 shield at level 40 then I'll accept it scales rather than gives a flat value.

    testing with 1500 damage laser:
with no shield up - 890 damage from laser to health
with shield up - "890 damage from laser" in combat log - actual 1500 damage to shield + 181 damage to energy + 0 damage to health

    testing with 188 damage laser:
with no shield up - 111 damage to from laser to health
with shield up - "111 damage from laser" in combat log - actual 187 damage to shield + 22 damage to energy + 0 damage to health

The relevant portion of the game text says "incoming damage will be subtracted from your energy instead of your health", but we can see clearly this is not true: it subtracts from both the shield and the energy pool. What actually happens in combat is the shield ends up running out quickly due to taking unmitigated damage. Anyway with some powerhouse testing it is clear there is a flat shield which works until (1) the shield is depleted or (2) you run out of energy. At any rate, I only brought it up because the ingame effects do not match the advantage's description (or what is in the build planner). At the very least, a note of the shield should be made because the skill description suggests a direct conversion with no mention of the shield.

EDIT: separate power bug: bestial supernatural's "barbed lariat" has a "slice and dice" adv to refresh bleeds.

"The benefit from this power can only reroute a limited amount of damage". There's the "flat shield" you're seeing. It's already mentioned.

    IMPORTANT NOTE - Aesica:
Adding new powers to frameworks all the time may break existing builds which use powers from said frameworks. This is because the order the powers appear in is determined by their place in the data. The data in a linked build's query string also relies on a specific order in the data to display certain powers.

This has left me with the hard choice between making sure similar powers and similar tiers remain grouped together vs adding them to the end of the data as they get added to the game. The former can, as mentioned, break older builds, but ensures that everything is grouped together and easy to find. (all tier 1, tier 2, tier 3, ultimates, etc together) The latter would preserve existing build structures, but over time, would result in a disorganized lump of powers (including ultimates) from various tiers all heaped together in a mess. For now, I'm choosing to go with organization.

Sorry for any inconveniences, but I do believe it's better for the long term.

    - Added the Witch archetype and new infernal powers associated with it.
    - Fixed several minor things involving tooltips, removed a few incorrect advantages, etc.
    - Premium ATs available from events now state which event they're obtained in plus other improvements.
    - Rebirth's icon matches the new green version seen ingame. How boring. :(
    - A few other very minor things that I don't even remember, but I don't think they broke anything. I hope. ^^

Edit: As usual, let me know if I missed anything or messed anything up. Enjoy!

Hello again Aesica, thank you very much for the update. I found some issues. It seems you have on gifthub the updated build of Herocreator which I downloaded to my harddrive and has the new AT, but clicking the link from here sends you to the old version which doesnt have the Witch AT. Also speaking of said AT you have small error in its power description.
-Will-o'-the-Whisp doesn't have the Harbinger advantange which stuns targets for 2 seconds.

^ You may need to clear your browser cache. Both the github standalone and aesica.net version should have the new stuff. That said, I'm tired and I'll add the missing advantage tomorrow.

Quickly hotfixed harbinger into will-o-the-wisp's advantages. Odd that it isn't there on the PTS.

Hello again, found two another bugs. The new Voodoo Doll block is listed in Bestial Supernatural instead of Infernal Supernatural and the Predator AT is able to choose between Antagonize and Retalation, but this choice isn't in the planner. Thank you very mucho for the hotfix.

i've found what i think might be a bug...i can't add Conjuring to a build in the level 6 power slot, despite the description saying it only needs 1 Sorcery power preceeding it, which i have in Eldritch Blast

EDIT: never mind, i fixed it by clearing out the entire power list and redoing it from scratch

however, while i'm here...Star Barrage's icon is either broken or missing

In-game, Compassion is listed in the Sorcery tree but does not count as a Sorcery power for purposes of prerequisites. This is probably a bug in CO.
