Yes, it is a loaded thread title primarily in the hopes that only the specific people this question addresses will respond. I mean, if you don't let rewards ruin your fun, why would you answer? Feel free to anyway.
But yeah... apparently there are people making themselves miserable for rewards. Mostly it seems the issue is about gear but I'm sure some people are doing it for costumes or powers or.... mods? I dunno that last one seems like a stretch. Now it may seem weird to people but I have gotten a lot of rewards out of the new reward meta but at the same time I have never forced myself to do something unfun. For a bit of perspective, I did the Justice Grind once - I got Kagami a full set of Justice Gear. At that point I said to myself "Hey self... that kinda sucked, I hate RNG rewards, let's never do that again". From that point on, not a single piece of J-gear was obtained. I never felt like I was left behind due to this decision, I never felt underpowered, and hell when the Cosmics first came out I was topping scoreboards constantly on characters who had Heroic gear at best, beating out folks who had Justice gear. I get the feeling that some people around here think I was grinding justice gear left and right so I just wanted to clear that up. You know, interesting question there.... if you think I enjoy grinding so much, how do you reconcile that belief with the fact that I refused to do the J-gear grind more than once.... you know, that hellish grind you people have had a love affair with for how long now?
And of course once GCR came out, I played what I wanted. I swapped between characters based on what I felt like playing. All my characters are fun and I find it boring to just play one character too often. I still do that. I play toons that already have all their GCR gear because they're still fun - I play toons who I'm not even sure if I care about them getting Distinguished gear. Cosmic Girl has enough GCR and SCR for a piece... for some reason I haven't even bought it yet. I play what I like, and if I get some gear I get it... mainly because I know that I will have fun and be useful to the group whether I have Distinguished, Heroic, Mercenary, or something else.. because that's just the reality of the game.
Anyways, apparently there are people just destroying their enjoyment of the game by choosing to engage in a process that actively makes them enjoy the game less, and I'm just interested in hearing why. Go ahead, the mic is yours, I won't respond at all, I'll just listen. Please make sure to be as thorough and elaborate as much as possible, and remember that I'm looking for reasons for why you choose to do this, not reasons why you feel like you are forced to do this or why you think it's bad that you're forced to do this. You type in your password, you push the buttons that direct your character's actions, I want to know why you're choosing to W your character into things you do not enjoy.
I personally don't care about the best loot or rewards as I play to have fun with what I have. So, this thread isn't really directed at me to be honest.
I think it's been made clear in a couple of threads that the new content is not for n00bs. Getting heroic gear, the basic minimum the new content is designed for, is time consuming and dull. If we're discouraged from trying the new content by people in game, by price barriers for the basic gear, then what does it matter what the new rewards are priced at? There are barriers before the barriers. It's wonderful that you don't feel discouraged Spinny, but I'm not in that same optimistic boat. This new content depresses me as it's stuff that's not designed for me and it makes the game that much more exclusive to people who have their own private clicks and private queues.
The problem is the bar and price of admission is now much higher then it's ever been, if you didn't get heroic gear back when it was just kind of grindy to get, while now it's super grindy, and from what I see on the PTS it's looking like those higher tiers are going to be even more grindy yet. I recently, last month to be precise, saved up enough SCR to buy a costume unlock with my main character. That's months and months of alerts to get a single costume unlock, now I'm not complaining, I'd have never gotten the drop in game, over 5 years of playing and I've only ever gotten one rare costume drop in game so being able to buy one was a treat, but it was a ton of work and when I think about having to do all that just to get some basic equipment it's really depressing.
Sure, I could jump into the GCR missions without being fully geared and without any experience, but I'd think that would ruin the game for other people, those that were willing to put in the time to grind and studded the missions so they knew what to do, and I'm unwilling to be the weakest link on a team. So I'll leave the new content for those it was clearly designed for.
I think its more like a mental barrier for people that think can't do anything if they don't have the top op gear the thing is... you don't need it, gosh even merc have slight differences under heroic, to be honest and putting an example here: I was told that a mind AT with only merc and scr gear can CC dogs on kiga and help CCing hearts at ape (GCR op level content) I could do both, and if it weren't by some mistakes of mine, or lag I could have done it even better! in resume, if a guy like me (who is not special at all and have less than weekends to play here) can do it, everyone can!

I don't play for amazing battles and awesome content. I enjoy creating characters and designs, with interesting themes.
Sometimes devices, auras, and costumes are part of that. It's discouraging because I know that I (with my available time) will never have these items while the remain BoP.
I don't necessarily think that chasing rewards ruin peoples' fun - most of the rewards themselves are great and I'm really looking forward to the upcoming stuff. That being said, I think when some folks look at the cost-to-benefit ratio requirements gating some of the rewards, they feel that the acquisition process of getting to said reward ruins the fun of acquiring it.
I'm personally going to focus solely on account-unlock rewards like costumes and powers, because a character-bound aura, device or gear (be it justice or heirloom) will probably have the effect on me that you're aiming this discussion at.
And I may not like all the pricing, but I'm still going to grind it out for that new double cape, by gum! No matter how many griefer d-bags try to jump in the few times I get to do cosmics because... DOUBLE CAPE!
I made the decision 2/3 years ago to only do endgame content / grind on my main. All other toons are purely there for the fun of making and levelling them (most of them are themed). Best game decision I ever made.
We can all fly as high as the dreams we dare to live. Unless we are a chicken.
I endured months of grinding for justice gear with the rng for tokens to fully gear out my 10 toons, weeks of grinding for onslaught gear for them too, i can endure this new scr\gcr grind too. Afterall, the good game; Monster Hunter has taught me patience for grinding
Saburfang, I endured months of grinding with the rng to get nothing. Congratulations on getting 10 done.
did Kiga yesterday on a level 35 Radiant in levelling gear. ok I spent the first half shoot kiga and the second half spam healing someone opposite so I could get the people in front of me
Because I'm a completionist, and I make my characters by theme. I like having all of the costume pieces and powers in the game available when I'm making a new toon. Don't really care about gear, though it's hard not to feel frustrated that the acquisition time for a set of heroic gear recently jumped from ~6 days to ~6 weeks for one character. Heroic gear is the threshold I was used to for my level 40s (84 of them). But, I grind content that I don't really like mainly so I can have full access to costumes/powers. Fortunately, the only stuff I'm really grinding right now that I don't enjoy is Onslaught.
I don't think it's even going to be an option for most people. The GCR content so far takes longer than Rampages. Worse, it takes bigger and less negotiable blocks of time. Got a life and can only play from 6-8 PM? Well you better hope the server doesn't beat all the cosmics at 5 PM or you're shafted. If you get luckier and the fight starts at 7:30, you better hope that no one in the zone hasn't done this before and that no trolls show up on the internet. Wanna do TA? Better have a regular team of friends who schedules this as part of your day, otherwise you have to form a pickup group and it might take four hours.
You're right, the only thing a mature player can do under these circumstances is say 'screw the grind' and stick with Legion which can be instantly acquired if you have the G and has 98% of the effectiveness.
Ofcourse, the problem with that is this isn't a chat client, it's an MMO. Powerbuilding is part of the whole shtick.
The other problem with that is that it's scary the developers don't understand this little piece of information. If players would rather do rampages than cosmics, the devs can't *make* them do cosmics anyway. Frankly, that attitude in and of itself makes me worry about the future of this game. I've seen it in a few MMOs before - right before me and a lot of other players quit and found more fun uses of our time.
I know it's great to have them developing things after the long winter, but OV has become a hilarious token creating exercise, TA is a elite player's clubhouse, and Cosmics are 45-player attempts to violate Murphy's Law. They need to make their new content fun and stop using the grind to make up for it.
I get so tired of hearing people complain about the grind. I mean, what are you going to do, go back and play through the leveling content for the 15th or 50th time? I mean, if you want to do that, then do that. But the fact is, time in game is time in game. After the 10th or 20th character, you're either grinding to level up or grinding to tweak out your 40.
Think about it, if you get all the 733t gear in 4 days, what are you going to do, then?
I mean, you could do like myself and many of the other vets do, and just kill Cosmics for the fun of it. Heck, I keep hitting the SCR cap on my main, and I have a bunch of unused GCR just because I like beating up the Cosmics even though I already have a full set of top-end gear on her. (Well, I could use 9s, but I'm too cheap for that.) I still run Rampages for the fun of it, too. I do NOT run UNITY ever, since the addition of SCR to Alerts. Even I thought that was a horrible grind.
But, then, what is the actual difference between grinding for rewards and just shooting pixels for the fun of it? Only your attitude.
The point is, find what you find fun in the game and do more of that, ignore the rest.

The reward is when you see your enemies lying vanquished at your feet.
Or for other people, the reward may be crafting a particularly creative costume or an excellent background story or having some good role-playing with similarly-minded players.

When I did think gear was an issue, I ground (grinded? grindeded?) on my main incessantly for about 4 weeks to make sure she had a top set of gear. I was on leave and had the time - I mean like serious "haven't eaten in a while, what day is this and the shower seems unused lately" style gaming. I thought Spinny, KK, BK, and more had all that stuff and it was needed to be good. What I found was that grinding "learning the fights" about a dozen times and asking questions was exponentially more important than gear. Deliberately taking the harder role of healing the baby tank (and dying a lot in the process) was more important than the gear I had. Learning to build properly is right up there too. Those things are the keys to success.
I doubt I will be grinding for rewards again. I almost always skip event stuff and have only one big event reward (the patriot vehicle because it fits so perfectly with my toon). I play endgame content on every level 40 I have and to gear them all would take probably longer than this game exists, not counting all the other 40s I will eventually have. Every now and then I get to add a piece of gear, either by buying someone's legion helmet or getting enough SCR for a secondary and that is like Xmas - it is an event to re-gear and go through all the choices. I enjoy the building/costuming as much if not more than the gameplay itself.
The grind just for rewards isn't worth it, so I don't. That doesn't mean I don't play a lot lately. Every chance I get I'm trying cosmics and might go back and do some more TA, definitely will learn the new zone -- I've even acquired one onslaught piece in the process (again, may not do that in the future). I play on my healer about half of the time and the other half on one or more of the others -- mainly because I surprisingly enjoy playing the healer so much. I usually switch toons as soon as I get a new costume made to show off.
My reward is keeping an entire cosmic run from being a wipe by staying in it and keeping the tank alive despite tails and a breath weapon on me. I've done that maybe 5 times and no one notices, but its worth more than any gear.
EDIT: Oh and punching Gravitar and Frosticus in the ****. That too.

^This. Though I do play for some amazing battles and awesome content I just do not have the time to do them when they can be done as opposed to just whenever I like.
I do not like doing anything that feels like work and all of this mindless grinding is basically just that. I do not mind doing Alerts now and then and events are okay so long as they are not grindtastic and require me to do it on every character who wants something but when it comes to this end level stuff it is just ridiculous. I simply do not have the time to even consider getting the costumes/powers/devices I might want from these vendors let alone any sort of gear. I definitely do not have the time to get started getting it only to have the server drop on me and screw me out of my reward or have the group fail after a big effort. Add to that the fact that the game is so cliquey that if you are not part of the group who is running most of this stuff already you can rarely get a group that CAN actually do it, or will even try, it just makes that part of the game not just unfun but not even accessible.
Let me use a different sort of end game mission as a fun example. Nemesis Confrontation has been around forever now. I have only ever managed to get folks to do it ONCE in the entire time I have played and then it bugged out at the very end ruining all our effort. After that I sort of got discouraged from even bothering. I mean why pull teeth to get folks together to do something and then have it fail for some obnoxious reason? Waste of time.
It just really annoys ME that there are some costumes and powers especially that I would love to have from these stores that basically I have accept I will never be able to get because I simply do not have the time to grind for them, would not enjoy the grind that much to begin with, and cannot get with the right group to even begin the grind with.

I haz a sad now, I'd be happy to help you with a run.
Rewards don't ruin it for me. So I have nothing to worry about, But what ruins it for me is its rather hard to accept that 90% of your steam friends don't play this game, Sense its more fun with friends than alone.
"I'll never look back I've got no regrets Cause time doesn't wait for me I choose to go my own way."

Hopefully the renewed development for CO (in terms of content and new zones) may entice them to try it?
If the new rewards require to do new content. And the new content requires higher level gear then that is a problem.
A slippery slope fallacy if I ever heard one since it's been proven time and again that the "end game gear" is not required to do any of the new content.
If tanks in justice gear with over 110% resist to all damage from defense alone and 15k HP BEFORE any aura buffs still can take over 3k through block on dino, WHEN ALL 3 TANKS ARE IN PLACE, how does one expect tanks in heroic gear to tank dino efficiently?
I am curious how you think getting justice gear over heroic is going to make that much of a monumental change, that a few extra points of resist at best is going to swing it in your favor. If you have trouble with heroic, then justice isn't going to fix the problem.
Maybe it doesn't make such a difference for tanks, I don't know yet, havent tanked dino with a heroic geared tank yet. I do know having justice gear improved my DPS by at least 1k on a dps toon.
Correction: The various changes you made when you got justice gear improved your dps by 1k. The actual transition from heroic to justice itself would only do that if you were already doing about 10k dps. After all, I've done the numbers, I know what the transition from heroic to justice actually implies numerically - I also know the people often change a lot of things around and then claim that switching to Justice alone caused all the effects; very sneaky sis! If you want to discuss this feel free to go to the link in my sig where I prove how much of an improvement justice gear actually is over Mercenary gear.
