Thoughts of a returning player.

A little background:

I left CO about 4 years ago, when it was vibrant and new, mostly because of the inherited players from CoH. A lot of things were promising back then, AP's, comic series, and the hero games were fun to explore and made the game interesting to play. I was silver back then but was looking forward to going gold (long story short i lost my gaming pc and was not able to replace it for a long time).

I have conflicting feelings about the game today, i didn't think twice about going gold after i returned, and i don't regret it... I love the game and the ability to build almost anything my geeky mind can conjure.... but a lot of things worry me. The following is my rant in the hopes that the devs can recover that feeling of joy I had playing Champions online back in 2011/2012

Alerts seem to have completly taken over the game, while this is good for leveling characters it substantially undermines the concept, no patroling, no missions, no interaction. It limits how rewarding the game can be... perhaps, allow alerts as a price after you reach lvl 40 with a toon? make them something you have to travel to do? I don't know... sitting around and waiting to kill the same mobs over and over gets tiresome pretty quick.

I miss the heroe games. they were wicked fun when they were new. I'm saddened to see that the same rewards they had when i last played are still the only prices available today. Please, Please do something to revive them, exclusive parts, unique costumes every month or so. Special events with grand prices for the overall best players. Anything, you have an amazing pvp plataform there and it hurts to see it empty.

Player generated content. You know what's cool? making stuff on this game, characters, nemesis, etc. I love pnp Rpg's and i would just jump at the chance to create a comic style mission with lots of twists. It would also take the weight off your shoulders when it comes to creating new content. If someone comes up with a good idea, pick it, produce it further, and reward that player... but perhaps that's too much to ask.

I won't go into high level content, as i'm just shy of getting my first toon to lvl 40, so i'm putting most of my hopes there. I know most of the players left have been here for years, but that's also a problem i sense. The goal does not seem to be exploring the game anymore, it's reaching level 40 to do the exclusive missions. Shortcuts, special powers and lairs are there to tell me "you have to get there now"

I love this game, it has a strong base, and i have never played something as unique. I really hope someone reads this, and I really hope you can fulfill the expectations I (and apparently others) have of what this game can be.

Please, please surprise me.

Also, was crafting reduced somehow? Because i distinctly remember being able to do more with it.

Well the questions you asked seemed more directed at Devs than players...but

Craft system is now used for fusing mods and the skills are now success rates...so bye bye crafting system.

Create your own missions aka Foundry. Been asked for...doesn't seem to be in the future.

I agree with alerts and I've always wanted events that are in other zones. With the revamped Cosmics and some of Halloween being in Vibora Bay...that is about it as far as encouraging exploration
    .
Alerts are the worse things for new players. I've seen players who were almost 40 complain about content but never had done VBA...

We have had some shitty luck with this game being passed around and not given priority, losing good Devs and such. We currently have a player turned Dev...and although everyone has their idea what makes a good game, she is the best thing we have to having ears on the ground and making this game better.

CO isn't for everyone, it's best to play the game for what it is and not what we would make it. But it never hurts to throw out ideas.

I completely agree with you on alerts, its really bad for the community in my opinion, now no one wants to group up for content, lots of people dont like soloing all the time in an mmorpg, that is mostly why most of us play mmorpgs in the first place.

I find the content just as rewarding, but maybe something can be done to make it more appealing and group encouraged.

And yea I agree that player content would rock but it might be a bit much as of right now since they are trying to do other things atm.

New player here. I'm level 19 on one toon and I've gotten 5-6 to level 10.

Really for me, the funnest thing is this game is the character creation. Fun to create, play for a bit then meh. I come from old school EQ days where there were 6-8ish starting areas so games with 1 starting area makes starting new characters repetitive; same story, same quests, etc.

I hate fetch questing games but this game kind of takes away from the traditional fetch-questing because there are a lot dungeon type of missions and that's really fun. The problem is, there's nobody to group with so its another solo mmorpg experience for me.

Then I discovered alerts! I love these! It's the only group experience I've had in the game and I get really excited about it and it means I don't have to do the ridiculous go here, go there, fetch that, bring it there, etc (WoW Junk). They need more and they definitely need to be longer, like not 5 mins, more like 30-45 minutes.

I accidentally ran "Resistance" the other day, solo, at level 15, and it was hard af but I had no idea how long or in depth that it was going to be. It was so much fun but it's a shame that I didn't have a super group to do it with.

It's also shame that this game doesn't have active PvP. Normally I PvP my way to max level and that's my play style but since i hate questing, Alerts are all I have. But I'm already bored of that to be honest; not enough diversity.

The problem with having a 1 trick pony-character is that it gets old fast. Asian mmorpg's do that, where you pick a weapon type and that's your class for the whole game and that's no good; this game is kind of like that. Again, EQ Gamer here, so i'm spoiled... But you know what else?- TES Gamer here too... So I'm spoiled with having multiple weapon choices and multiple play styles and an insane amount of spells. Even Diablo 1 has more spells than the average mmorpg these days.

Anyways, I downloaded the game for my 7 year old son and me to play together and that's suffice because we only play 3-4 hours a week. But Solo wise, as much as I want to, I'm already bored; No pvp, no grouping really, and a lack of character skill-diversity leaving you hungry to make a new character just to experience a new play style but then you have to do the same story line again = infinite loop.

Also this game sort of lacks incentive to level up. I've been spamming 1 & 2 basically since level 1. Some of the new skills are relevant but hardly tactically useful because its a tab-target-hack n slash. So yeah...

There's a lot I still haven't figured out though and I'm sure I'm missing a lot of the fun stuff but I want to do it with a team, not solo.

Going to log in now and probably run in circles. or not, idk. Good Day

it happens sometimes. Be careful not to get bitten, could happen to you too.
Being a dev is better than being a werewolf..... or were-pony in the case of @kaizerin :p

Tab-target hand.n.slash? depends on build. :p some builds play that way, but not all.

Also, if you are getting into the game now you should learn the ins and outs of Nightmare Invasion.

Resistance, white out, demon flame, aftershock and generally all AP's and comic series are the best missions I've seen in the game so far. Not only are they challenging, they are actually well written and have decent voice acting. And they really capture the feel and tropes of comic books.

So, you mentioned that you hate fetch quests and endless travel. But by your own admittance Alerts get tedious.

Maybe a balance would be better, I don't know. Make the alerts longer and revamp the perks to give more xp and special rewards per completion of missions?

Alerts: You don't have to do them if you don't want to, simple as.. Personally I only dabble with them in-between missions or when I have nothing better to do, as for their purpose, they allow the players who can't sink the time and/or the money into spending ages leveling a character and still want to have something to do...to well.. do stuff.

Hero games: A mixture of long time unbalance of a few select powers, permanent AD, the queue being borked, no rewards and the outright toxic attitude of players more or less killed what life the hero games had... sure they fixed the perma AD and OP powers and added in a few rewards.. but too little too late...this one can be put down to bad management.

Player generated content: we've been told the nem system isn't going to get touched ever.. and as awesome as it would be to have a foundry style system that lets players make their own missions, I can guarantee, given how the general attitude of the CO playerbase is.. it would be abused for easy gain... or if they made it not give a reward.. nobody would play it.

High level content: there's two types.. the old stuff which can be soloed easily enough with a compotent build.. and the new stuff which requires a team/large group of highly compotient players to do...as for it being the main reason people play.. that's easy enough to explain, a combonation of low drop chance and content diffcuility means that items that drop from them have inhernet value.. so people farm the stuff to sell it.. for G or key or whatever.

Final statement: CO is going to be what you make of it.. not what is given to you.

Yeah some things are broken... no I don't use/abuse them.. where would be the fun in that?

Most definitely. You can join the Costume Contests channel or keep an eye on Zone in Ren Cen. The channel works best since you can be anywhere to see them advertise and see set schedules. Even some impromptu show up now and then.

(Anyone can correct me if the channel name is wrong or not, since servers are offline at the moment for me to double check)

Edit: The channel name is Contests-Central.

you must have left just before On alert hit in early 2012.
crafting got shot and buried, we got mods and fusing.
old gear got dumped. we went from 8 stats to 3 ss's.
    we gained spec trees.
we lost some costume drops form different places.

alerts turned up, people complained about lowbies making alerts fail. so after a while they swapped Smash and grab alerts around.People spam them because its quicker and gives Better rewards than running missions.

Hero games did get new stuff recently, Heroic gear was added. that wasn't there before because it was only put in, in the last month.

The action packs, comic series were down, for the most part, before on alert.
Just after on alert, our devs got 'borrowed' to help NW which was behind. WE never got them back.
For the next couple of years we, got vehicles, lockboxes and mini events, usually to launch lockboxes or the custom alerts.
2 years ago, we got cryptic north who did a good job, then got split up and transferred.
Now we are back at the HQ with the current group , who are trying to get stuff done.
They've got more done , than the last 4 years total.
    that's about it.

The company has been more interested in the other 2 games, so this one got not much done.

Well... in many media becoming a werewolf/vampire/zombie can be as simple as getting bitten by one.

The extra interesting part about most of these old myths, is that they evolved from stories in olden times and the "Bitten" part is sort of the kid friendly or censored version of what was going on.

"If you know what I mean. Wink, wink, Nudge, nudge. Say no more!"

Yeah, these were old school "Don't have sex" scare tactics.

Internet search Syphillis images, those scare tactics were polite compared to the potential nightmare of going to a doctor and getting something worse from his filthy hands.

Ok, done throwing up? What were we talking about?

    Right returning players something something...

My highest level character is 'stuck' at L30 unless I start doing Alerts. Problem is, I solo adventure a lot because of my schedule and my one freeform character is mainly built as a 'ninja batman' type. I've found that there is a lot of content he can't effectively solo and I hesitate to start doing Alerts because I'm not sure he can 'pull his own weight'. I don't want to start over and the build does work really well in scenarios where stealth counts. That's the concept. Stealth and Alerts don't mix... you need speed for Alerts.

I'd like to see more solo-friendly missions at the mid-range level that can be 'stealthed'.

If getting over the hump wasn't so painful, I'd probably play this game more often.

Your character is absolutely fine doing alerts. No worries there. Stealth is great in alerts, if you can hit boss with a stealth-boosted attack.

As for solo missions, many are very friendly to stealthy heroes. Where are you looking? Which zones? Vibora Bay Crisis would be great.

Also, do you have gear? How good is it? Does it match your super stats? You might find some really good, cheap green gear in the auction house.

Hit me up in game @roughbear if you need help, advice, or gear. I am sure I can outfit your toon very well, including mods.

Stuck at level 30 he can't get to Vibora Bay Crisis.

Level 30 was the dead zone where Help A Citizen Missions cut off that created Alerts (ie, a way to hang around the main game population and still get some action while teaming with noobs without having to hold a team together)

stobg2015 can use his stealth in Alerts if he learns to be patient and attack last in a lethal finishing strike, or 40 or so lethal finishing strikes as it tends to be. He's afraid to adapt. What would his mentor Woody say?

Well, more like being afraid of being a drag on a group. I do have the fast stealth enhancement, but it's still slower than running around. Cape flight looks really cool on this character and it helps me get around faster, but it's a little hard to control when the speed ramps up. I really need a second travel power but -- have to level up to get it. :)

At level 30, a character can go to Monster Island. A character can do the bigfoot story arc in Canada, too.

Yeah, Canada has no real level requirements for anything and actually has the greatest variety I've seen in mission levels. Some of it is level 35 IIRC. It's good to remember that Champions has auto-run, or auto flight as the case might be. It's very handy for when you need to fly long distances and have absolutely nothing to do while flying.

NOTE: there are some areas with flying enemies, but they're not very high altitude.
