Champions online should capitalize on its comics elements some more

reiwulfreiwulf Posts: 442 Arc User
One of the things that I like about CO is its graphic style. sure it's pretty old and dated, and could be better, but it has a comic style that no other superhero MMO has, both DCUO and marvel heroes use unreal engine and have a much more realistic approach.
CO on the other side feels like playing a comic with its graphics, specially with the simple textures and black borderlines on everything.
I think they could capitalize on that, doing something they already have done. Using comic panels to help illustrate important quests, it would make things more interesting. Like in the tutorial quest (maybe the old one, I don't know if it still happens) we had some comic panels showing people screaming in terror and thhe Qularr attacking.
we also get some comic panels on loading screens when showing villains backstories. I've always been interested in seeing some more of it.
both DCUO and Marvel heroes have some really amazing comic style animations, but I figure that is much harder to do and requires more resources, which CO probably doesn't have. but simple panels helping illustrate some important quests could add a lot to immersion, instead of just having a random NPC asking me to bring 5 cat nails.
I could post some screens if someone doesn't understand what I'm talking about.
what do you think? I don't think it would be hard to do, and it would make things much more entertaining!

EDIT: found a pic of it:
they could use them for crisis or each time we get to a new zone for the first time, etc... although I'd love to see them for many more quests.

now I remembered that whiteout does this quite often, and it is one of the reasons it is so awesome XD. probably my favorite comic series/adventure pack

I'd like this, but unfortunately they don't seem to have an in-house artist to do this stuff anymore. All the new artwork that's been made hasn't had a very comic book feel, kinda more like anime-style, which I would absolutely hate to see in this game. If they could get an artist that does western comic style art, then I'd definitely get behind this.

WHiteout is really one of the best mission arcs the game has.

    Whiteout is amazing indeed.
Okay, I took around 2 hours to made this. Imagine if Witchcraft had such an illustration when explaining the situation when getting to Burnside, the ghost town in the desert.
(the white part is supposed to be transparent in game)
I think as a player it would be much more immersive, wouldn't it? I know my style might not be close enough the the one used in other quests, but I think it's not too bad either. I woudn't even have a problem in doing them myself, but I fear that even with that offer, they would not take the work to actually put in in there. :/

Your style is much closer to traditional Western comics than the art they've used, so I wouldn't mind seeing it (or my own! :D ) used for panels.

Hey, even if it doesn't match the style, 2 hours is pretty damn good!!! Did you draw, scan and continue digitally. do this with a mouse or a drawing tablet????

    Again pretty impressive sir!!! :)

biffsmackwell: we should contact them and ask them to let us make the panels for stories haha.
darqaura2: thanks! I did it all with a genius tablet. took me a bit longer than usual because I had never drawed her before.

I just had somethign like that in STO. I was doing a MIssion called Surface Tension. Had to go to the Undine conference and instead of the normal warping into a zone cutscene. I got what looked like a trailer from the early game. old graphics and all

Anime style art can be pretty great. I don't get the hate for it, it all depends on which style is used. You can love or hate anime but don't discount an entire style becuase you hate how some plots are written.

I dislike the style of the art. I'd be saying the same if they decided to, say, start doing all Champions artwork in noir style, or in Liefeld style, and those would actually fit more with the game world than anime does.

I can't stand the anime style, and would hate to see it applied to this game. I know this is hyperbole, but if they were to change the in-game graphics/models to an anime style where all men look like women and all women look like little baby girls, I'd drop this game and never play it again, in a heartbeat.

It was hypothetical anyway. Doesn't matter which style of anime it is, I seriously dislike it.

art is subjective, and even though there are many different anime styles, some very different from others, I think CO will always fit best with superhero comics style

That looks more like anime than any of CO's recent promotional art does.

And, really, Biff? For an example of American comic art...that kind of looks like sh*t. What's with Hulk's extremely distorted jaw and how about that odd xylophone he's wearing over his abs?

We won't even go into the obnoxious presentation of extreme violence with no sense of subtlety whatsoever.

I prefer this type of comics personally.
but can we go back to the topic at hand? this is not a anime vs american comic style contest.
(luckily for Logan, he got better after that nasty wound lol)

You realize you used the word "subtlety" when you were talking about the Hulk, yeah? :D

No, that piece does not look like anime, and the jaw/musculature choices are just style choices. Most artists don't do 100% realistic physiques. I certainly don't. I do what I think looks good.

Anyway, I think if we had a picture of Wolverine being rent asunder by the Hulk before every mission, the ga,e world would be a happier place. Let's do it.

Even though I don't prefer superhero comics, I still think the game needs to better adhere to it's genre. We fight too many monsters and robots, and hardly any super villains and organized crime.

There's been a distinct lack of Batman/Spiderman style narrative for a long time. The Nighthawk event was the closest we've gotten in several years.

There is also too much emphasis on fighting henchmen and lone bosses. Super villain teams are a thing, and the game has plenty of villains in it to populate those teams.
  • reiwulfreiwulf Posts: 442 Arc User
ooh a supervillain team, that would be awesome! that's one of the things CO could do.

Agreed with the original poster - it's one of the reasons I love Whiteout and the other missions where some of these comic panels show up. Would like to see more of this.
  • biffsmackwellbiffsmackwell Posts: 4,739 Arc User
The comic panels do tend to make cutscenes more engaging than the usual plain animated cutscene.

Yeah it's definitely good art, but it's indistinct. You wouldn't know it was anything about comics without any context.

  • My opinion on this is if they desire quality artwork. Then hire a quality artist this isn't rocket science folks..

That sounds like a great idea, They should come up with a way to get direct contact with those who know how to draw comic style art that would diffinitely help them a lot in the future if they don't have the artist to make the comic style art.

Devs ask for help and we draw/make the stuff for them atleast to a certain extent.
