Spears?

The spear was always my favorite weapon of choice in any mmo, and I'm sure quite a few of you favor it as well.
I really think it would be a good improvement to introduce them into the game as a new martial arts power. It could consist of quick moderatly damaging attacks and can penetrate armor. A cool power attack could be a jumping spear-viper strike with a power advantage that coats the spear in venom poisoning them, and after the poison expires the target is paralyzed (just an idea I thought would be sick). Or throwing thunder spears that penetrate armor. Also it would be cool to maybe even keep the powers similar to the other martial powers, just different animations. Like inexorable tides could be spear sweep, and eye of the storm could be spinning a spear around instead of two swords.

--I expect those of you that hate me to troll so go ahead.. I will not reply to this. Just thought I'd speak my thoughts on what I would like to see. Thanks

Polearms are kind of neat. But would this implement the traditional advantage of a long-hafted weapon, greater reach? I mean, we can punch from people 10 feet away, how far away should we be able to use a spear from?

A high-reach melee powerset could be very interesting. Keeping enemies close enough that you can hit them, but far enough away that they can't hit you would be the logical goal. Knockdowns, roots, and repels would all be good tools for this.

Ooh, the powers could have different effects based on distance. When used on a target within 10 feet, it could be a sort of shove with the shaft that deals damage and repels (up to, say, 20 feet). When used on a target 10 to 20 feet away, it could be a strike with the head of the weapon, that deals greater damage than the close version, but has no additional effects.

My understanding is that the way CO handles animations works poorly with two handed weapons, which is why heavy weapons isn't two handed. That would cause issues with spears as well, though throwable spears are already in the game.

This could lead to introducing various official Champions villains who use spears or pole arms, to the game: Copper Spear, Black Paladin, Halberdier, Valak the World-Ravager.

you could always use a spear with a single hand

One handed spear fighting isn't unheard of, it is usually done in conjunction with a shield, and sometimes called the scorpion grip. It's fairly effective, but you lose the power, control, and range by using it one handed, but it has an advantage where you can throw it and disarm yourself.

I actually didnt think about the range I think a slightly increased range would be pretty cool actually like 15-20ft. Animations wouldnt be much of an issue if they combine one and two handed attack. Mainly two hands but some strikes could be like a one handed thrust lunge to someone lol idk x).

Two handed weapons are a pain to code because weapons can only be attached to one limb. With how stretchable CO models are (think chest width), the other hand would inevitably not be on the spear in many many cases.

I say that, but I actually have no idea. That's just what my empiric knowledge of the CO engine tells me.
