Sounds familiar ?

A few months ago, my brother introduced me to an American band called Mechina. Their style can be described as symphonic cyber metal, so it's not something that most people would appreciate. Among their many killer titles, I came upon a song called Terrea, on their album Xenon. That's when something caught my attention : the orchestral part. For everyone to understand what I'm talking about and why it's related to the game, I leave the link to the song here, uploaded on YouTube by one of the band members :

If your ears are used to this kind of music, please focus on the orchestral part (violins and stuff) behind the guitars and drums. And then, if you've played Champions Online long enough, I'm sure you'll see where this is going.

So, my question is : how did that specific music ended up on that song ?

The similarity is only superficial, and the product of the fact that there are only so many arrangements of notes that are going to make sense to the human ear. Both arrangements are intended to increase adrenaline flow, giving a feeling of greater excitement to the moment, so the similarity is also understandable. (It also shares certain parts in common with the fight music from the original Star Trek.)

Sounds like a straight lift/re-use of Champions Music to me. Here's a few possibilities:

    1) It was stock/production music that Cryptic licensed for use in the game and it's out there for anyone to use if they've paid

    2) It's been lifted from the game and put up on a "royalty free" sample/music site and whoever used it thought it was legit

    3) Chance Thomas or Cryptic has licensed it to them

    4) They've just ripped it off

Yea, this sounds incredibly like the music you hear in the sewer escape in Resistance. It could be an incredible coincidence, but as the music industry is rife with what they like to call... sampling... to justify using music from another song, it's hard to tell. It just sounds too similar for me to take it as a just so happened to pick the same instruments for the song playing.

Actually, I just had an answer from the band on Facebook. It seems that piece of music is part of a free music library called Kontact, from where the band got the sample. They had every right to do so, but I'm a little bit disappointed that Cryptic didn't create their own music for Resistance. It still fits as the theme, but if anyone can use it, it becomes so generic.

creating music costs money and usually requires the composer to know what is being done and timing for it.

Cryptic licenses their music which can also be found in other places. The Resistance outside theme and even that haunted Whiteout theme.

...I'd be more disappointed that a band would be using licensed music that isn't their own.

They probably aren't using the music sample, but the program set that has the specific sounds and instruments premade to be used and orchestrated. A lot of sound packages have free to use instruments that are uniquely created.

Happens all the time. Loads of movie trailers use stock music. You'll have heard something by these guys at least once, if not more... http://www.twostepsfromhell.com/ http://www.immediatemusic.com/ and anyone can licence their tracks if they want to pay for it.

Kontakt - if that's the one they're talking about (https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/samplers/kontakt-5/ - is a sample player, you have to buy the libraries to play through it. Funny if Cryptic are using one of the demo tracks, though....
