The Idea
Basically, Go Gearless is a widely available device that grants the Gearless buff. This buff negates all benefits from equipped gear but provides a large, well-rounded boost to all stats. Its purpose is to grant the hero mediocre, but useful, stats that are independent from their gear. The device has infinite uses, can only be used at level 40, and lasts until the player deactivates it or uses a Become.
What exactly would the Gearless buff provide?
This part is very open for change and I am flexible over the exact numbers, but here is an example of what the Gearless buff could provide. Again, this buff would be applied after it removes all benefits from equipped gear on the hero.
- +150 to Primary Super Stat
- +100 to Secondary Super Stats
- +50 to Constitution
- +20 to Recovery
- +100 Offense
- +80 Critical Strike
- +20% Healing Bonus
- +50 Defense
- +120 Dodge Chance
- +40 Crowd Control Resistance
- +500 Maximum Health Points
- +150 Cooldown Reduction
- +150 Cost Discount
- +40 Crowd Control Strength
- +10 Maximum Energy
The purpose is to provide generic stats that do not excel in any particular way but instead provide an overall balance that anyone could use.
These buffs would be considered "from items" to the game logic since there are specializations that scale specifically with stats from items.
I am also open to the Gearless buff changing depending on what Role the player has selected. For example, the Gearless buff could provide extra Defense and add Threat to those in the Tank Role. Or extra Critical Strike and add Crit Severity to Melee Damage and Ranged Damage Roles.
WHAT?? Why have this?
There are many reasons why I'd want something like this.
- First of all, I think that making all super heroes item dependent defeats the idea of being a super hero. Think about it; your demonic millionaire playboy robot wizard may be powerful now, but once you take off their gear, they're fragile and weak. All player heroes heavily rely on the stat boosts acquired from gear regardless of what their role may be (except Club Dancer or Cheerleader). Item dependency is a common MMO trope that I feel doesn't fit with the whole Super Hero theme. Instead, having a Gearless mode that provides a generic boost of stats will allow heroes to fulfill their roles (not excel at them) without the need for fancy gear.
- Second, it will make retcons much easier. I've been through dozens of full retcons and each time I wish I had brought along more varieties of gear, or need to make trips to the Auction House, because I'm fiddling around with Super Stats. Having something like this that provides a generic stat buff would be a great help, then when done with the retcon, players can move on to specialize and further tweek their builds with gear.
- Third, it will set a stat standard for level 40s. They can use the Gearless buff as a starting point when comparing the benefit their gear provides. New level 40s can use it while they grind up for better and more specific gear (basic 40 gear is trash anyways).
- Fourth, it can create a level playing field for PVE and PVP instances. The game could force Gearless buffs on all players during a specific boss battle or in a new mode for Hero Games. Players can also use it in PVP duels to make matches more even. For example, if a person with Justice gear wants to duel a level 39 or a fresh level 40 but not walk all over them.
How much?
I'd prefer that the Go Gearless device would be free and given to players when they open their Level 40 Supply Kit so it's widely available. Or cheaply acquired in the Q Store.

I love the appeal for a "gearless" hero. If you are roleplaying, you can just imagine that your hero has no gear. That's what I do.
Whoever you are, be that person one hundred percent. Don't compromise on your identity.
