Well this will be interesting for former COH people

The reverse engineering efforts have NOT produced a working COH private server (despite conspiracy rantings to the contrary) and no full working game with the client.

But... there IS a cool thing coming down the pike. Turns out that the various coders appear to have figured out how to get the COH game client to link up to XMPP protocol and configure an ICON like interface that actually allows people to create avatars and mingle in Paragon City. No powers or NPC interactions. But full chat and emotes. Flight and other travel powers coming "soon" perhaps in a later iteration.

The prospect is making a lot of former COH people VERY happy indeed. It's not the full game back by any stretch. But it gives people who wanted to socialize and mingle in that setting a way to do so again. And that's pretty damn cool, no matter how you look at it.

What I find most interesting in the long term - at least the way my non-technical layman's eyes see it (which may be wrong - take that into account) - is that they may have stumbled onto a way to develop a "distributed server" environment for future MMO developers to implement. That is to say - in a few years if this develops further, I'm thinking it might make for a very interesting new architecture for MMOs to use rather than the standard centralized "server farm" used by companies currently. Reminds me of Team Fortress 2 in fact. You CAN use the Valve servers in TF2. But anyone can set up one.

I'd love to see MMOs with that kind of structure as an option. It would make MMOs much more durable a proposition in the long run. And make it MUCH more difficult for companies like NCSoft to just shut down a game and sit on the IP making it impossible for people to play.
