Are there two Qwyjibos?

Archived PostArchived Post Posts: 1,156,071 Arc User
Asking here cause its PnP related. Was reading the Monster Island book and I believe Qwyjibo was mentioned as one of the monsters in the previous Qularr invasion in the past. Though when playing the Monster Island Crisis arc; the players are involved in the origin of Qwyjibo which differs from the PnP material. Is there any backstory to this? Was the MMO's Qwyjibo named after the original?

Also the post-crisis zone is littered with Qwyjibo carvings in Echinocos Shores, which makes me think at some point in development, Qwyjibo's story got retconned. :)

Qwyjibo sort of did get retconned when the Crisis was created. That being stated, HeroSteve has said on multiple occassions that when it comes to the CU lore the Champions Online version is the correct one. Basically put, Qwyjibo took a gamble to try and stop Teleios, he basically lost the gamble and lost his intellect and basically became and over-sized, mindless beast.

    It's a retcon, I'm sure.

No big deal, the original version was a Giant Monster from a Old Qularr invasion.

When designing the Mon Crisis, someone who wasn't familiar with the lore thought "Wouldn't it be cool if we could involved the players into the lore, and show them, even let them be a catalyst for certain past events?"

And so a new origin that was as players get to wtiness was created for Q, and we even power up the old Mega-Terak ourselves in the Mon Crisis.

Great story elements, but completely misses the fact that Q had supposedly been on Mon all along.

I did find it a little odd having a massive statue of him sticking out of the mountain just after watching him transform. I've never read the Monster Island book so wasn't sure of the original lore, so I suppose this answers that particular query.

Hehe that's because MI was one of the first zones, and the concept of the Crisis system wasn't even really thought up till much, much later. Maybe we will get some missions in teh adventure packs that explain how those big statues got there and such.

Now that's a great idea! I haven't actually ran into the Qwyjibo spawn in Echinocos yet, (he's not showing up for some reason) but It would be neat to have a cult of Manimals worshiping him in the area, and maybe a whole King Kong inspired story where they take him to MC and he climbs up one of the Ren Center buildings :). Now I've said it, it might not happen :(.

Qwyjibo is ona timer. And, after sometime him and the Teleiosaurs will go fight and most often because the Teliosaurus is either overpwoered or bugged on how much damage it does, and will wipe the floor with Qwyjibo quickly. Then of course, there seems to be a gorup of people that go upa nd fight both on a regular basis I believe.

Which makes me wonder how all the statues and that giant mountainside got created so quickly.

I say you were out for a long time before waking up on the sub. While the memeber of UNTIL took pictures of your unmasked face and samples of your DNA incase they need to take you down. Super hero management groups are never run by good people. It's always the ones that primarily fear the super-human that work their way up the ranks.

I don't for even a second think that UNTIL isn't keeping tabs on every single super human that they can behind the scenes.

And so while you were out the manimals were building that giant gorilla statue into the mountain to honor his noble sacrifice!

That or the worms did it. Hoping to attract Qwyj over to em for battle training.

I am hoping an adventure pack will actually explain those statues. Maybe there was some legend or something. Who knows.

Yeah...perhaps they were carved as part of an ancient prophecy from the island's earliest inhabitants: One day the great ape will come.

Sounds like a fun scenario...a time travel adventure pack going back to the early days of Monster Island!

maybe its the old time travel standard, when you defeat him or he got his intellect ripped away, part of him went to the past, or all of him in a future event, and thus the legend from far back in time. with just one giant flaming ape.

Even with that uh. "theory". there are statues of the ape in museums way before you get to the crisis.

I mean the ape is everywhere!

Of course, we are trying to apply logic to comic book world logic where super sciene is so powerful people can fire a laser at a rock face, without doing any actual manipulation or moving the damn thing,a nd make a Michaelangelo style sculpture in a matter of seconds, so believing there was something there, like oh, the Worms that never bother Qwyjibo, and in many isntances seemt o escort the great ape, could of possibly did something that intricate in short order ;)

See! The worms did it! Freakin Worms!

Another possibility, time travel. I don't know how. But... Time travel!

I can clarify this one. ;)

When I wrote the Monster Island supplement, some details about Monster Island hadn't been entirely finalized. I had to create some background for Qwijybo, so I went with what seemed most dramatic and logical at the time.

Cryptic later added the event where Qwijybo, well, becomes Qwijybo, thus making my original backstory incorrect.

When I write the description of Monster Island for the forthcoming Champions Universe supplement (possibly later today, in fact), the story that appears in the MMO event will be used, if I need to provide any background for any of the giant monsters.

I think the part that people mostly want an explanation of will be the statues all around Monster Island. Some retcon wiggling possibly will be needed or, the Worms did it, that could always work hehe.

Nah, it was really done by....the enigmatic Cult of Qwyjibo (formally known as the Fire Mountain Tribe).

See Qwyjibo was part of a prophecy passed around between a small group of manimals captured & hunted by Argent. It was foretold that the god of the fire mountain would manifest on the island in the manimal's image; and that he would lay waste to any who would threaten his chosen peoples. The few that escaped lay in hiding within the Echinocos Shores and did their best to escape the notice of the Elder Worm. It was there that they would build effigies and large rock formations in praise of their ape-god. Little did they know that both science and fate would bring these prophecies to life and the god now known as Qwyjibo would come to claim the throne that had been waiting for him.

Oh, and thanks coming on and clarifying the orignal question Steve, much appriciated!

Speaking with no authority at all: I believe Teleios and Moreau have both been experimenting with the Qularr biotechnology. It's likely that "Moreau's serum" was based on some Qularr mutagen that they'd previously used on some other gorilla. That gorilla is the one immortalized in stone.

Qwyjibo may have known this, but hoped that being a manimal would allow him to control his behavior better than the previous test subject.

This, of course, is true. Then again, Telios would never use so many caps to make his point. Shouting is for less perfect people.

Nothing says Q is the First giant monkey on the island. For all we know Jack Black showed up 90 years ago and carted the old one off :D

Statues? What statues? Those are actual mutant gorillas that have been petrified by a runaway alien-DNA reaction.

Hahaha! Nice! Okay, I'll start being a little more serious again as it was I that asked the silly question in the first place. :) Thanks to Lucid and Steve for adding your 2 cents in this thread. Much appricated.

Well it's all a Nemesis plot anyway, well probably. Heck the Crown Prince of Automations is so devious his plots end up in other superhero franchises.
